  • How to make a realistic Cactus Cake with Spikes
I found this spiky cactus in our local Ikea store and I thought why not see if I could recreate him in cake 🌵 So here is Spike and his Spiky friend 😉
Let me know in the comments what other items you would like to see me recreate in cake?
Tools and products used in this video -
For the buttercream I used Green Colour Mill bit.ly/greenco... and also used the Hot Pink and Yellow Colour Mill to colour my cake batter
    Hot Pink - bit.ly/hotpink...
    Yellow - bit.ly/yellowc...
For the Plant Pot I used a 6'' Cake and 5'' Cake Card
For the Cactus I used 4'' Cake and 3'' Cake Cards bit.ly/cake-cards
Mix Brown and Orange fondant/sugarpaste together to create a plant pot colour I use premixed colours
    Brown - bit.ly/saracin...
    Orange - bit.ly/Oranges...
Mix Green and Black Fondant/Sugarpaste together to create Cactus Plant colour, I used Massa Mona Lisa for this one
    Green - bit.ly/massamo...
    Black - bit.ly/massamo...
I then mixed Mustard Dust in with white fondant to create fluffy balls to then add the spikes to the cake :) bit.ly/fractal...
Make sure to dowel the plant pot cake to ensure the weight of the cactus doesn't cause the cake to sink - bit.ly/2Uy7d06

I made a similar one years ago. I used half-spherical stainless steel bowls to form a very ball-shaped cactus. for the spikes I used sliced almonds. my pot was very rudimentary and flat. I created a sand filling instead of soil for which I used a mix of one part brown sugar and one part powdered hazelnut.

Maybe use pulled sugar for the spikes but colored what you want it to be? Or like the decorative candied nuts with the sugar/caramel spikes off of them, and instead of pressing them into the fondant you can use some kind of edible glue? Might be faster? Anyway, the cake looked gorgeous as is!

Hi Emily, thanks for the ideas - I definitely think they could work. I've never tried pulled sugar but it sounds exciting and something cool to try :)

Firstly very beautiful art work outstanding for me , as you asked so I kept thinking … you could have used white chocolate or some sugars for baking that you can shape and freeze for spikes .

Absolutely amazing! It really is, and I can see that would take a long time to do the spines of the cactus. I'd have used the vermicelli as spines, and maybe rolled the vermicelli in edible dusts to get them the colour if like, if they need it. It's brilliant, Zoe; thanks so much.

This is so realistic it’s crazy! I’d be scared to take a bite, even though it’s cake 😮. I was wondering if you’d consider making a cake with no flower pot. As in, the side is decorated like a flower you just pulled out of the pot with exposed roots, soil, and whatever those little white bits are. I think that might be an interesting challenge. Thank you for reading my comment ❤

What time of cake do you use? Looks like it's a pretty stiff consistency to be able to carve them well

    • @zoesfancycakes
      @zoesfancycakes  2 года назад

I tend to use either a Madeira Type Sponge or genoise type as I find these a little easier to carve with compared to a Victoria sponge type. Albeit you can't beat a light and fluffy cake 😊
