I made a similar one years ago. I used half-spherical stainless steel bowls to form a very ball-shaped cactus. for the spikes I used sliced almonds. my pot was very rudimentary and flat. I created a sand filling instead of soil for which I used a mix of one part brown sugar and one part powdered hazelnut.
Maybe use pulled sugar for the spikes but colored what you want it to be? Or like the decorative candied nuts with the sugar/caramel spikes off of them, and instead of pressing them into the fondant you can use some kind of edible glue? Might be faster? Anyway, the cake looked gorgeous as is!
Absolutely amazing! It really is, and I can see that would take a long time to do the spines of the cactus. I'd have used the vermicelli as spines, and maybe rolled the vermicelli in edible dusts to get them the colour if like, if they need it. It's brilliant, Zoe; thanks so much.
This is so realistic it’s crazy! I’d be scared to take a bite, even though it’s cake 😮. I was wondering if you’d consider making a cake with no flower pot. As in, the side is decorated like a flower you just pulled out of the pot with exposed roots, soil, and whatever those little white bits are. I think that might be an interesting challenge. Thank you for reading my comment ❤
Firstly very beautiful art work outstanding for me , as you asked so I kept thinking … you could have used white chocolate or some sugars for baking that you can shape and freeze for spikes .
As usual, absolutely incredible!!! I have a bit of a random question if you wouldn’t mind letting me know … where is your kitchen from? Love these cabinets ❤️. Thanks Zoe.
Zoe..me encantan tus trabajos!! Seria ideal ese pastel para alguien que le guste las plantas... Pero algo con espinas... Dicen q no hay q tener esas plantas en la entrada de las casas!!. Mejor un pastel de maceta con flores!🙏😘😘😘
Honestly every video I watch I'm blown away how talented you are. Would love to know what recipe you use for your ganache and what chocolate you use. I finding it impossible trying to find tutorials on sculpting modeling chocolate got to sculpt the avengers for my son's birthday xx
This made me giggle. The other night I heard a thud/bang outside. When I went outside to see what it was there was a cactus just like this on my footpath 😂
Brilliant, love it! Maybe angel hair would work better for the spines? I think it's a bit thicker than vermicelli. I have a friend who made a similar one and she used spaghetti for the spines.
I would have took like a pin or need and made a mold for it, then put chocolate in it but maybe it'll melt or break. I LOVE the idea of this realistic cake tho
I tend to use either a Madeira Type Sponge or genoise type as I find these a little easier to carve with compared to a Victoria sponge type. Albeit you can't beat a light and fluffy cake 😊
I saw two um cacti? Couldn’t tell which was the real one or cake one when you passed with the camera. Then side by side couldn’t tell either. Till you cut the cake. This is so beautiful. Your hard work always shows, in not showing. 🤟🏼🤍
You are too hard on yourself Zoe. Your cactus looks brilliant. Thank you for sharing your work 💜
Thank you! 😊
ZOE. It’s just perfect!! I can’t imagine you doing it better!

I think the spaghetti is perfect for the needles, it looks great
Incredible work! I'd colour the vermicelli just like you do with coconut.

Hi Emily, thanks for the ideas - I definitely think they could work. I've never tried pulled sugar but it sounds exciting and something cool to try :)
Always Lovely cake
Vermicelli made from Pakistan 🇵🇰

Fishing line works well for the spikes
Great suggestion! :)
I could not figure out which plant that you made! EXCELLENT LOVE ❤ IT!!

Thank you 😊 Our new kitchen is from Howdens Joinery. The cupboards are a Matt Navy sort of style, hope that helps.

Thank you Nora 🥰 I didn't know that but I will make sure to not have my cactus plants at the entrance to my home now 😉 Have a great rest of the week.

lol, thats sooooo funny 🤣

Thanks for the tip, thats a fab idea - will def try that if I ever decide to make another cactus cake 😊
I thought the spikes were perfect!
👏👏👏👏👏💋😘❤️❤️
Would spun sugar strands/shards work for the spikes? (It’s what I thought you’d used until I watched !) Excellent work 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I would have took like a pin or need and made a mold for it, then put chocolate in it but maybe it'll melt or break. I LOVE the idea of this realistic cake tho
What time of cake do you use? Looks like it's a pretty stiff consistency to be able to carve them well
I tend to use either a Madeira Type Sponge or genoise type as I find these a little easier to carve with compared to a Victoria sponge type. Albeit you can't beat a light and fluffy cake 😊
@@zoesfancycakes Awesome! I appreciate your quick response! 👍
I heard of this thing called pastillage ... I think it might've worked for the spikes
I will give it a try thank you
🌵🌵🌵😜😜😜👍👍👍
💋💕❣️💯
i thought you did an amazing job of the catus i thought it looked real
Thank you for the kind words! :)
You are far too hard on yourself! Your cake looked fantastic!
The needles/spikes on cacti are called "spines" or "needles." What about angel hair pasta?
Every single thumbnail i believe you are kidding me : Absolutly nothing looks like cake. And then you prove me wrong. Every single time x)
