Freeza is the definition of: "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."
The worst thing Goku ever did, was motivate Freeza.

To be ironically pleasant as he speaks to you deciding whether to end you fast or slow is probably the best thing about a villain I can think of. Some of the best villains are like that. Him being polite to a degree masks his malicious nature and before you know it: death beam to the heart. It's brilliant!

I actually think the reason why Dragon Ball fans love Frieza is his role in the greater overarching story. He's essentially the villain responsible for the story. Without him, Goku likely wouldn't have been sent to Earth. Vegeta wouldn't be the character he is. Everything in early Dragon Ball from Goku's time on Earth, to the arrival of the saiyans, to venturing to Planet Namek was the perfect and natural set up for Goku to eventually confront Frieza.
He's also the last DBZ villain that actively sought after the Dragon Balls. After the Frieza saga, the spheres that the show is named after essentially become a background accessory they use at the end of every battle to revive people.

Honestly, I’d love to see a freeza redemption arc. I’d want it to be absolutely stupid like how Hercule convinced main buu to stop being evil (just simply telling buu that killing other living things is wrong because buu just didn’t know that before).
Maybe freezes destroying a planet but in between, exploring, and decides to cook something from the forest on that planet. While finding food, he comes across a hallucinogenic mushroom/plant or whatever, and just starts tripping balls.
He’s having a horror trip in his mind, but is completely incapacitated physically. Basically reliving all his fears like dying in a humiliating way, goku, vegeta, bardock, gohan, trunks and other sayins mocking him before killing him mercilessly the same way he did to them. And while he’s tripping out, a random stray cat just comes up and starts observing him.
Initially, freeza is frozen in fear because he sees Beerus, but really it’s just a stray cat. In his drugged out state he realizes that if the sayins can inflict all of his worse fears on him, what then could god like beings do. Rather than beg for mercy, he accepts that he will die once again, and with humility, asks beerus (the stray cat) to please make it quick (he’s remembering the “mercy” he showed vegeta on namek).
The cat just meows at him, lays down, and just starts pawing at his tail. Freeza, though initially confused, starts laughing because of relief, and then begins looking around and seeing the beauty of the Forrest he’s around on this foreign planet. He lays down in the grass with the wind swaying, and the cat comes on top of his abdomen and starts purring as it falls asleep. Freezas peaking at this point, so he has that classic exiting the body and becoming one with the universe thing, and realizes that he’s grateful to Goku for pushing him to train and become stronger.
He realizes that his own arrogance is what’s been holding him back, and as he’s in this serene, beautiful trip after initially being horrified, he discovers how beautiful life is, and begins crying because of how cruel he’s been and how indiscriminately he’s destroyed so many living beings and other planets. He looks down at the cat purring on his stomach as he begins to come down, and it meows at him.
He spends the remainder of his trip thinking about how cruel his father was to him and others, and decides to break the cycle, by sparing the cat (he realizes it’s a cat as the drug begins to wear off). Once the drug wears off, he spends another day in the after glow processing everything.
By this point, the cats left, and he’s going spare the planet, leave, and sail around space for a bit. As he’s about head out, the cat comes back up to him and meows. Instead, he stays on the planet with the cat, living a peaceful farmer life, and bonds with it until its death for the next 15 years. Instead of crashing out like he usually does, he grieves and goes through his emotions properly. He sets his sites on a new goal, and with his new found empathy, decides to seek out the help of the z fighters.
At some point on the planet he has built a hyperbolic time chamber, and just trains just for the fun of it, but also to extend his time with the cat during its lifespan. Anyone who’s owned a cat knows how they are, and so the cat teaches freeza patience. If he tried petting it and the cat scratches his or leaves, rather than kill it, he realizes that if he kills it, it will not be able to show him affection later on like coming to him at 10 pm and just chilling with him for a bit.
This is what allows freeza to actually become the strongest being in the universe 7. Or something along those lines. Basically, he learns humility by defeating his own inner demons and upbringing in order to become stronger. Rather than a real near death experience like in the case of vegeta or Goku to become super sayins, his is an ego death.
His new goal: gather the dragon balls to ask shenrron to revive his feline friend for as long as freeza is alive. That’s it, nothing more nothing less.

    1) Freeza’s *sole* redeeming quality of tolerating his Childhood Nanny Berryblue’s warm-teasing *without* vaporizing her his a truly amusing example of the truism “Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas.”
    2) Cell, as a Generic Chimera manufactured to be a weapon, had no free agency in even existing, much less the chance to exercise free moral will, is frankly less evil than Freeza, who *had* but waived that freedom & right.

Precisely. As Dadoria said, Frieza saw and respected Vegeta's potential, which is why he spared him (ultimately he was proven correct, as Saiyain Saga Vegeta had a power level even higher than Ginyu while in his Great Ape form). The "special treatment" Frieza claimed to give Vegeta was probably just certain liberties that would help him grow stronger or be of better use. Liberties he probably didn't have to give, but considering how similar the two were in personality (especially the version Vegeta in the Saiyain Saga), it makes sense that Frieza saw a bit of himself in the saiyain prince.
I always thought it was an interesting parallel the way Vegeta in the saiyain saga and Frieza in the Namek Saga, both claimed to be the strongest in the universe, despite knowing that superior beings existed. It speaks to their similar level of pride and arrogance. Heck, Vegeta was so far gone in his first appearance that he was willing to kill what remained of the saiyain race without batting an eye (he even nearly blew himself up when he aimed that Galick Gun at the Earth, the same way Freiza did to Namek when he started losing).

    Great video! Enjoyed every second.
Another aspect about Frieza I'd like to mention is the source of his kind of power or energy also reflects his character.
Examples: as powerful as he is he can't sense energy, at least when we first meet him, he needs technology when it comes to sensing or connecting to chi.
Which also further compliments Goku as his opposite
But also his ability to manipulate the physical world, where even in the tournament of power he is seen crushing Jiren with giant rocks from the arena.
Or when he is revived at least in the resurrection movie his minion swears they brought him back out of loyalty which is a virtue, but to Frieza it clear he dosnt understand virtue, or why anyone would act from such a place.
His first thought and respone is that no one else was capable of handling the empire he created thus they needed him back, because the idea that someone was capable of ruling the empire but would rather bring him back instead out of loyalty is purely inconceivable.
This further implies his pure disconnect from spirit, he has no feeling to the spirit he is purely physically and his energies extend to physical manipulation, but nothing spiritually
This further compliments the relationship with Goku cause Goku existence is the furthest thing Frieza is capable of understanding or comprehending.
Perhaps the most frightening person Frieza can imagine is Goku.
These where just some other areas of Frieza I was worth mentioning.
Thanks again for the great video.

It’s a bit of a pity that we’ve never truly had much media on Frieza’s empire. Yes we see some scenes of it, mostly from the anime, but what was life like for the civilian side of Frieza’s empire. We see how Saiyans were treated, but how were other races under the empire’s occupation like. What were the living standards, type of economy and laws in place? And what was it like for those living in the empire when the Emperor was killed?
Hopefully we could see more media that expands on the lore of Frieza’s empire in the future similar to how there is lots of Star Wars media that covers life in Palpetine’s empire. It has lots of potential given how big it was, encompassing around 70% of the universe at its peak. That should make it significant larger than even Palpetine’s empire which only encompassed one galaxy.

Then, when I saw him in the Tournament of Power arc in DBS, I was first wondering what was Goku thinking, bringing him along with his team. Seeing them fight alongside each other was a sight to behold, but I knew he had his personal motivations and reasons for doing so, like a lot of humans do. Frieza is no doubt the immemse personification of evil that has ever been created, and the beloved Akira Toriyama did an impeccable job in creating him with every diabolical detail. Frieza is the one villian in the series i think is beyond redemption, He's been so twisted by his greed and need for domination that he'll always be a threat

The Namek Arc was what, in my opinion, what really sold The West on Anime and its somewhat unorthodox yet unique methods of long-form storytelling. I was about 8-9 years old when it began airing on Toonami and not only was I absolutely TRANSFIXED UPON THE TV when it was airing a new episode, but two things in particular are what really sold my generation on it:
    - the foreshadowing of something called “The Legendary Supa Saiya-Jin” (aka Power Levels/measurable progression of the characters’s abilities)
    - Frieza’s unparalleled depths of depravity & capriciousness tempered by that assuredness of their own level(s) of power
People can whine all they want about how Toriyama & ToyoTaro “rehashed Frieza” for Resurrection F, but really thinking about it…you can really see why Toriyama NEEDED his crowning achievement in Evil back in the “main roster” for Super:
Reinforce why none have compared since and continue his unending character arc of NEEDING TO BE THE RULER OF ALL!
Even Beerus just flat out allowing Frieza and King Cold to run amuck on Universe 7 days a lot since it establishes a level of power Frieza would want to aspire to (then surpass) and how even the Gods of Destruction recognize the potential of both the greatest of the Good and of Evil.

Great breakdown and I think Frieza is so well loved because of the many layers to his character. The way he runs his empire is not just a feudal system like Japan or Medieval Europe, but Frieza also runs the empire similar to say the Persian of Mongolia empires, because in those systems you didn't need to be born into it to join and raise up through the ranks in fact many of the most famous generals in those empires were foreigners of conquered peoples. It's also the various looks and transformations that Frieza goes through that always keeps you guessing what comes next. We also see how great of a manipulator he is, when he destroys planet Vegeta unless you were there you believed the story about it being hit by a massive meteor, in fact the story was so convincing that even the great King Kai, god of the Northern section of the galaxy believed it, for when he told Goku the story of the Sayians he told Goku the official version, only Vegeta thought it might be a lie but couldn't do anything about it. We also see how dark and sadistic Frieza is when fighting the Z-Fighters villains in the past and after Frieza did what they did out of a plan or necessity whether need the Dragon Balls for world dominance, take their time in a fight to test their own abilities, or destroy all because they are simple monsters. Frieza took his time first as a way to punish our heroes, then once they showed they could fight he only powered up enough to see what kind of challenge they could give him only to see out heros have strength so let's turn it up to see what happens next. At anytime given the depths of Frieza's power he could have ended the fight on Namek at anytime but didn't because then he'd be left on a planet with nothing to do but wait for King Cold's ship, Frieza was actually killing time, he was so powerful that planet killers like Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta were just toys to pass the time.

I have always found it interesting how Frieza’s empire is made of multiple races and and is not dominated by the rule and superiority of one specific race like most empires in real life and in fiction (eg Palptine’s empire had a human dominant sentiment and rule)
I’ve also had a theory regarding Frieza ‘selling planets’ as I’ve always found it strange what Frieza could gain from selling planets to poor races that he couldn’t just take with his power. So my theory is that his empire would conquer a planet, give it to a race in need and in exchange, instead of giving him riches, they pledge loyalty and become a part of his empire. This is essentially his empire’s method of imperialism and how they recruit people for his armies.
I feel this would be consistent with how he is portrayed as he seems more like a Hegemonic warlord and Emperor rather than some crooked Buisnessman who sells things to earn a profit that he could just forcibly take.

There's a lot to love about a villain like Frieza. His grinning calmness and mannerisms of speech are all the more terrifying, just because they indicate his absolute confidence that he has nothing to fear from whoever he's meeting, his cruelty and mercy are just arbitrary enough, that you can't be sure of almost anything around him, which is also pretty chilling. However, he also comes across as a genuine person with his own desires and concerns, and while there's no question that his identity and his powers effected the kind of person he became, they didn't effect it to the degree that Cell or Buu's natures effected their choices.
In addition, Frieza's history with the saiyans, and his past crimes against them made the struggle to defeat him unique, because while a good villain can absolutely be just someone who's a big enough threat, that personal connection only adds to the significance of the conflict against them. In fact, it could be argued that Frieza was more connected to Goku personally than any villain in the series since Radditz. He's just one of those villains that had it all.

In reference to Toriyama’s comment about Freeza being partially inspired by “some queen he saw in a movie”. I believe there are some good contenders for who he pulled from. This is all sourced from a phenomenal post on Kanzenshuu by the user Kunzait.
First is the character Dongfang Bubai from “the Smiling Proud Wanderer”. Despite only appearing in a single chapter he is arguably the most famous character in the story and has been depicted many times in Wuxia/Martial arts films, which inspired Toriyama heavily. His androgynous appearance, signature finger beams and cruelty towards subordinates are all very Freeza-esque.
There’s also the character Wang Zhen from the Shaw Brothers film “Secret Service of the Imperial Court” which released in 1984, the same year Dragon Ball started. Freeza’s more psychopathic and spoiled brat tendencies alongside his signature laugh in the Japanese version are likely pulled from Zhen. They even meet similar ends with both being bisected.
Both characters are physically defined by strong feminine features such as lipstick and painted fingernails, with Bubai in particular often being played by a woman. This could be the reason why Toriyama remembers them as queens. It’s all speculation though.

Making ki work so as Frieza or anyone who makes a planet nuking ki blast is weakened for months after usage or needs the time to recharge to full power. So it’s like a last ditch move that needs consideration.

One thing that I adore about Frieza's fourth form is how to an outsider to the series it wouldn't look like much, but to someone who's been following Dragonball from its inception, it would've had a very subtle dread attached to it simply because of his appearance. Something that might not even be recognized by anyone on a conscious level. Like, throughout Dragonball, Goku was a kid, fighting threats that were way larger than him. The only real exception to this rule being his rivalry with Jackie Chun, who was far more evenly matched with Goku even back then. Toriyama - whether intentionally or not - was an expert in capturing that David vs. Goliath aspect. Every time Goku would go up against what looked like insurmountable odds and prevail. But then Saiyans showed up and something began to shift. Nappa - while depicted as brutal and more powerful than anything Goku had faced up until that point - was not the true threat. The smaller more devious Vegeta was. But even with Vegeta, there was comparable size with him and Goku being roughly the same height that then gave way to a more traditional David vs. Goliath dynamic as Vegeta tapped into the Oozaru.
And then Frieza comes along. His first form is tiny and sadistic which is unsettling in itself as it feels like a child pulling the wings off a butterfly the way he brutalizes the Namekians and his own underlings. But then he transforms and gets bigger, more in line with villains that Goku usually stomps. Which - ironically - was reinforced earlier in the arc with how Goku utterly dismantles Recoome. But then there's the final form. Frieza is noticably shorter than Goku. I forget if it was a chapter cover or just art Toriyama did in the lead up to the fight between Goku and Frieza but in it, Goku is towering over Frieza who has to crane his neck back to look up at Goku. Goku is no longer David. He's Goliath, and at the same disadvantage as all the people he'd overcome in the past. And it was that subtle shift that helped Frieza feel so intimidating on a level nothing else that came before him really did and it was a brilliant bit of visual storytelling, whether it was intentional or not.

This was an episode I’ve waited a long time for. And it exceeded my expectations. Great job as always.

Ah yes, one of my favorite anime villains ever. Dude was hardcore, killed literal BILLIONS of people/lifeforms and probably an equal amount of planets, sadistic and loves to toy with his prey, all while taking his time and with a dark sense of humor, even though he could kill them instantly with a snap of his finger. He's also basically the most pivotal character of the entire series, his actions is what got the plot rolling into the direction it did. (even if Freiza wasn't even thought of by Akira back in OG DragonBall).

What I love about Frieza is we’ve all met him at one time or another.
That boss that abuses his power.
    That lady with racist tendencies.
That kid who misbehaves knowing they’ll get away with it.
All people we wish Goku would slap some sense into.
    Great video as always!

I think Frieza is a great example of a fine balance between rational and evil. He's not really a comic book villain, he doesn't do bad stuff for the sake of it. He has a reason. But he's not overly rational to the point that he does good, either.

If I had one thing to add, Freeza killing his subordinate after calling in the Ginyu force because he was "no longer useful" was anime-only.
The only reason I think that deserves a distinction, is because its the only time he killed for literally no reason.
When he kills his own troops, its because they failed (the troops in Res F failed to take down the Z fighters) so he does it to set examples that failure and weakness is not tolerated. When he kills innocent civilians, its to prove a point and strike terror or out of revenge/spite. Freeza is not someone who kills for the sake of killing, despite obviously finding joy in the act.
And I think this speaks to his character. While he is cruel, malicious and sadistic, he is also methodical and calculated.

Well said. I was going to bring up Togoma from the Res F movie, since he kills him for a rather petty reason, but in hindsight, I think that particular example was also him trying to prove a point. He didn't want ANYONE arguing with him about taking revenge and made an example out of Togoma to strike fear into everyone else in the room.
It's not a mere childish outburst (although it is impulsive and petty). Ultimately, his cruelty stems from his ambitions and goals. If executing people isn't in service of those things, then he won't bother with it.

@@DLxxx Exactly. This is the same freeza who was content to sit in his chair and let underlings do basically everything.
He rules through fear and strength. He is never to be questioned. Togoma not only questioned Freeza, he did it in front of everyone else while also implying that freeza's goal were not wise. He cannot let someone undermining his authority go unpunished. Zarbon, Dodoria or even the Ginyu's would never DARE second guess Freeza's orders or ambitions because they KNEW how strong Freeza was, not just by repuation. The Freeza force in Res F however were the dregs who never met Freeza.
Freeza's not dumb, he knows Sorbet is just a ambitious boot licker who wants Freeza back as a means to an end. If Freeza takes over the galaxy again, he will be right there as his Number 2. Tagoma basically confirms this by expressing that revenge is unwise and they should focus on conquering, these guys don't want Freeza, they want Freeza to restore his empire so they can benefit. He isn't putting Freeza's wants and desires first and that is a fatal mistake.
So Freeza is immediately setting examples. Flexing his power in front of his underlings. Reminding them that there was a reason why the most powerful fighters in the galaxy feared him.
