The fact the Jonathan’s last act of life was to embrace the creature that caused him so much agony throughout his life and admit he still cared about him was so moving even Dio had to pause. I wish later parts went into more detail how Dio really felt about that moment, even if he’s unabashedly evil.

He cried of jonathan's death, his narcissistic and purely evil side drove him to murder Jonathan out of revenge, but whatever shred of humanity he had left, shed tear for his brother.

The most interesting part of Dio's evil is how petty it can be. Throughout Stardust Crusaders it's established that he's made it clear to his followers who know what his stand can do must keep that secret at all cost, to the point that the idea of risking being forced to reveal it to the Crusaders is so terrifying it directly causes that follower to fail. And yet, when they do eventually figure out what The World can do and confront Dio, he merely shrugs since he is so supremely confident in his stand's power. He allowed his followers to believe the most furious vengeance would be visited upon them if they ever betrayed this secret, and yet when that secret is finally unmasked he doesn't appear to care.

D'Arby panicked when Jotaro brought up Dio's stand because he realised that since objects were randomly appearing with Jotaro, he had the same power as Dio (without knowing it himself yet). This led him to conclude that Jotaro had cheated in an unprovable way and gotten an excellent hand. (He had not, but who would assume that Jotaro didn't know his own power?) But I agree it was the fear of Dio that made him panic and lose rather than at least playing the hand to see what happens. (Worst case for him, it ends how it did in the story and he dies; best case he gets lucky and Jotaro hadn't cheated and he defeats him).

I've been waiting for this episode.
One thing that I think is important to note is the influence Araki had when listening to the music of Ronnie James Dio while writing DIO's character. As his story ties directly into the themes of the lyrics from songs like "Holy Diver", "Hungry for Heaven", "Egypt" and others. Holy Diver in particular definitely influenced Araki in coming up with the idea of DIO being submerged in water for years on end.
Personally, I find DIO's heaven plan to be horrifying. It takes away all of the agency we may or may not have, and would leave you with a full picture of what your life is going to amount to, effectively leaving you a puppet to fate. While our lives may be planned from the start, it's only through our agency, real or fake, that we are able to become free thinking and compassionate humans.
But why would that matter to someone like DIO? A man who is by all accounts, more monster than man. A man who takes away the free will of others at the drop of a hat, whether it be through his mind altering pheromones, charisma, zombification, or through his stand...DIO's sole purpose was always to infect THE WORLD with his malice.
Thank You for covering my favorite series of all time!!!

I'd like to point that in the context of the main literature, regardless of media (manga or anime) that the heaven plan is never framed to be good for humanity in any way.
DIO's ideal of Heaven results in everyone being aware of their own fate, that fate being that humanity's one true and only king was DIO.
In the absense of DIO, Heaven, under Pucci's influence isn't any better, just a different flavor of worse. There is no king to fawn over or fear, but the simple inevitable apathy that will reach all of humanity because of their awareness of their entire purpose in the universe.
Jojo as a series is about exploring and celebrating the glory of humanity in all of its facets to the absurd, bizarre extremes. Both good and bad.
With awareness of the future, there would be no glory to celebrate in. Everyone will simply be a sleeping slave of fate, forced to endure and play out the whims of destiny, regardless of what they feel.
Under Heaven, Crime would mean nothing, Heroism would mean nothing, Death would mean nothing, Life would mean nothing.
I don't think Araki is a fan of Fatalism.

    • @bugjams
      @bugjams 6 месяцев назад +20

Well said. I can't actually imagine how anyone could view Pucci's heaven plan as being good in any way. At best, you see that you live a long and healthy life, but all excitement and surprise is removed from it. At worst, you may learn that you will die young, and in a horribly painful way, leaving your remaining time alive full of fear and dread.
Pucci's Heaven would pretty much solidify Fate, giving nobody true free will. And while Fate is a very real force in Jojo that arguably removes agency from some of the characters, it's been shown time and time again that those of strong will and good heart can change the direction of Fate, meaning free will and choice is still possible.

Heaven is an evil idea, I'm glad the theory of heaven has never been substantiated, it would rob us of everything valuable; everything we could do or have done would become meaningless and reduce the value of ourselves, our efforts and our perception of others, our lives would pale in comparison to a heaven being real. Sounds like a nightmare. Imo, Dio acted exactly like a person who didn't care about life, which made him a person to make heaven real for all of humankind. He's an evil person for making heaven(total suffering and banality) a reality for humankind. The "Idea of Heaven being real" made him even more evil than everything in his life did before. Maybe, idk.

Not to say that everything after is unnecessary, obviously, but that Dio's life is essentially over after that: the moment his evil is revealed, he is doomed to forever be a victim of his own hubris. I love that quick moment from Stardust Crusaders, when Dio pauses in the middle of his pursuit of the Joestar gang to marvel at a modern car. Dio's power came at the cost of any chance of growth.

Dio Brando is a dark parody of a Victorian novel protagonist:
-Like a traditional victorian protagonist, Dio was born poor and lost a parent due to tragic circumstances, while not getting along with the other one. Unlike them, Dio lacks the kindness commonly associated with those characters.
-While many Victorian novels would have the poor protagonist fighting the evil rich person and winning through guile, the Joestar family are genuinely kind people and Dio is attempting to kill them to get their fortune and out of jealousy.
-A Victorian novel protagonist also has a loyal group of friends who support him through thick and thin, Dio's "friends" are in reality a gang of bullies who abandon him the moment he gets knocked off his throne and enable him constantly, allowing him to be an abusive brute.

So the Heaven plan is actually really interesting because on the surface it would appear like what Dio and Pucci want is a greater good for humanity. The ability to know one’s fate and thus have the anxiety of the uncertain stripped from you sounds good on paper; but there’s a few things to keep in mind.
The first is that Dio and Pucci are not actually doing this out of the goodness of their hearts nor even for a greater good. Dio is a prideful egomaniac who believes he stands atop humanity and thus believes he can project his thoughts and beliefs onto them without their consent; where as Pucci is an unwavering follower of a false idol and thus is blind to the true evil behind their version of “Heaven”.
And two, their version of Heaven is a twisted ideal that goes against the center theme of Jojo. As Araki has stated before, Jojo is a celebration of humanity, and to be human as the series has pointed out is to accept one’s fate and to face it head on with righteousness and resolve despite the uncertainty in their minds. Dio’s heaven would rob humanity of its strongest trait and that is the ability to face fate even in uncertainty. Because if everyone knows their fates why would they bother actually living? If you already know how your life is going to go, the surprises, the love, and the good that life brings will be meaningless because it’s essentially spoiled for you. Most importantly, your actions can impact the fates of others around you, but if nobody feels the need to act anymore, then the influence someone can have and the good they bring to the world will be lost.
That’s why in the end, Pucci loses, and a world where neither his nor Dio’s actions is created at the end of Stone Ocean. Because the two of them did not want to free humanity at all, but would instead create a world founded on their unproven ideals and subjugated all of humanity to what they believe is right because “they know better”.
So in short, Dio’s heaven plan is evil, but evil in the strange and bizarre way evil is in Jojo😂

I find the most interesting part of DIOs character are the people he actually somewhat cares for, like his mother, and to an extent Jonathan’s especially after his death, he showed a lot of respect and in his own way care for him. Vile Eye, for when you do the Yoshikage Kira video, I have a very important piece of information to say about him.
Kira was intentionally made to have a backstory by Araki. He even states this somewhere (possibly an art book or commentary). Point being, he chose not to show it as it would be too dark to show in a teen’s weekly manga. The story involved Kira being abused throughout his life by his mother while his father wouldn’t do anything. This would be the reason as to why Kira hated women and why his father was so protective of him.
The backstory wasn’t canned as Araki said he wrote Kira with this in mind.
Also, amazing work on Dio. I thought I already knew everything there was on him, but you managed to create a very different painting of him that really highlights the depth of his character. Bravo!

There's one small mistake in this video. The 14 phrase password is not necessary to the Heaven Plan, its necessary to Pucci. It's his backup in case he dies. Thats why he has his leftover bone so Pucci can create the Green Baby. When Pucci tells the Green Baby, a product of Dio's will and remaining body, the 14 phrases etched into his Stand (his very soul), the Green Baby would recognize and act out Dio's will, fusing with Pucci, the holder of the password, as the carrier of Dio's will. Other than that great video. I love that you talk about how Fate in JoJo is a tangible, unchangable force that acts as the universal rules to the JoJo universe and actually understand Dio's Heaven Plan. Ive been wanting a JoJo video for literal years so this brings a huge smile to my face.
Regarding his plan, Dio's Heaven Plan is pure evil. He's not doing it for the good of others, he's doing it so humanity would he forced to come to terms with his plan of world domination. A world where no one would dare to fight back as Fate would he against their attempts. Dio is evil the very core.
Also the new universe in part 6 isn't a brand new world. Parts 1-5 are canon, but events regarding part 6 and Pucci's influence is completely gone.

In regards to knowing your own fate, it kind of brings up an interesting idea: if EVERYONE knows their own fate and if some change their own fate, would that (ironically) create chaos from uncertainty? If that's the case, would that make DIO's idea of heaven self-defeating?
Considering that Pucci was defeated regardless, I would say that DIO's heaven was doomed from the start, or at the very least unsustainable in the long term.

The thing is that fate can't be changed naturally. Some Stands can alter fate but typically it just ends up going through a similar course. If DIO achieved his Heaven Plan, he would be the only one exempt from fate, everyone else would be a knowing slave of it and couldn't do anything about it.
Fate in the Jojo Universe is a real thing, compared to gravity by DIO in how it moves people and things on a pre-determined path. If you are fated to do something in Jojo, you will do it unless you happen to have some ability to avoid it (Made in Heaven, Bites the Dust, King Crimson). As an example, if you are fated to be hit by a car, you will get hit by a car. Even if you know you will get hit by a car, even if you know the exact time, place and car that will, you are still getting hit by it. Fate will move you to that path. This is why at the end of Part 6, Empirio really couldn't do anything differently than what he did in the original universe. If it wasn't for Pucci changing his fate by accidentally inserting the Stand disk into him, he would have been defenseless to do anything as he'd be a slave to fate.
So if you were in DIO's Heaven, you would know you are about to be hit by a car, but can't do anything to stop it.

Point is that people couldn't change their fate even if they wanted or tried, only one who could alter fate in the new universe was Pucci. Emporio tricked Pucci into inserting a Stand disc into Emporio because he literally couldn't do it himself (sure you could argue if tricking someone else into doing something is still you doing it, but in the end, it's a fantasy story)

Fantastic video as always, but I wish you would have focused a little around Dio's reaction to Jonathan's death. He did not say much, even in the manga, but Dio's words (although deceitful in nature, trying to appeal to Jonathan's empathy) implied a level of respect and familiarity for Jonathan. And his reaction to Jonathan's death was astonishment, as if this wouldn't have been the death Jonathan confined himself to anyway, on a burning and sinking ship. I think it may have been a slight wake up call for Dio if he considered Jonathan to be comparable in strength and will to himself, because even Jonathan could not overcome death, even with a wife and child to live for.

@@willdiesel8431basically part 6 never happened, probably Dio in the new universe alongside pucci died in Egypt or jotaro and Joseph found pucci before he could do his heaven plan, making jolyne not to go jail and having a good life and relationship with anasui.
At least that's what I think because yes ,Dio definitely existed and it was pucci that wasn't in the new universe, but I still believe he either didn't meet Dio or met his demise way before he could unleash his heaven plan, pucci is probably the most successful villian, he effortlessly killed all the joestars but only emporio was able to get him with weather reports ability.

@@atif45602 thanks but that's not exactly what I asked.
There are 'theories' out there but I wanted to know from people who actually read the entirety of Part 7. I appreciate your explanation but the reason for my inquiry was to determine if Part 7 specifically was worth diving into. If DIO is still being waxed about poetically yet again, I'm going to be turned off quicker than an unpaid streaming service. Someone else already stated that DIO is DEEPLY influential to the plot of Part 7 and I was already skeptical of the people calling that arc the best in the series. So...yeah, I was looking for some insight, if spoilers are necessary I wouldn't care all that much. I guess I could read the wikia on the series but it is almost ALWAYS better to get the interpretations of the fans.

@@willdiesel8431 Part 7 is completely unrelated to parts 1-6. The Dio in part 7 is not the same person as the dio from previous arcs, a lot of characters just borrow names from their older counterparts.

Superb video as usual. I'm so glad you covered Dio, I've been hoping you would cover more anime villains. And Dio is one of the best. My favourite moment is in Stardust crusaders when Polnareff is trying to walk up the stairs towards Dio but keeps finding himself back at the bottom of the stairs when he gets halfway up. It happened several times. The implication is that Dio was freezing time and manually moving him each time just to mess with him. It's so deliciously petty but it's what makes him so interesting as well.
