@@DixieLandTom3 vs the Mac mini, not the MacBook Pro. If you're a student who just needs a laptop for school you don't really need that sustained high performance that the Pro offers thanks to the fan, so you might as well not spend an extra 300$ on something you're not gonna get the most out of, and when you're a student every dollar matters
Why not Mini and basic iPad? You can get a used basic iPad 9th gen with a 30$ keyboard for under 300$ and a used mini for 400$? So for around 700$ you can have a note taking, browsing and reading device, and a home desktop that has all the ports and better thermals. Most students don’t need one single amazing machine, they need a versatile and cheap ecosystem to be able to do work with whatever situation arises.
I'm debating between a similar setup to yours vs. an upgraded MBP. What led you to that choice? Did you already have the iPad and didn't need another portable device?
No, it will not. I have been testing the mac mini m1, and it's not nearly as fast as everyone claims they are. Sorry, need to have some guys out there that are unbiased, and let's see some real tests.
@@ceasar12c Elaborate please. I've seen several benchmark vids. From my experience, Adobe Lightroom classic (rosetta2 translated) does suffer after a couple of hours on macbook pro m1. Thermal issue because of how this app is designed? It does the same thing to intel CISC based laptops. Edit: seems to be application memory management. LRC keeps allocating more and more until eventually causing high mem swap IO to disk. Doesn’t crash, well sorta... rebooting fixes it for a while.
@@ceasar12c yep this guy and max tech are all doing such basic level testing and steering clear of anything that doesn't favour the M1. For example doing 'video editing tests' and only using FCP or audio production tests that only use logic with stock plugins. I'd say if you only ever use things made by Apple then the performance looks pretty good. Anything else is very much up for debate.
Ordered a macbook pro on Monday 16gb ram, 256gb storage, all my files are in the cloud and I never touch my actual storage limits. Cannot wait for it to arrive. Since working from home I've been using my personal laptop more and I needed more power. Only reason I went for the pro over the air, is the fan should give me more longevity, and also if I decide to sell it and upgrade in a few years, the pro will hold more value than the air. The best laptop i owned was my 2010 mac pro, ever since no Windows laptop have ever come near that, so can't wait to get back on the Mac's.
well I'm a youtuber and still not sure what should i get. bought my girlfriend the m1 air and took it for couple days of testing with my editing workflow. I didn't see it go above 70 degrees and there wasn't any hiccups. now I want to sell my 15inch i7 16gb pro model to buy the m1, cause that's enough power for my demands. and that's a tough decision between pro 13 and air, cause probably you won't need that fans on 13 pro (air never got hot during my work), but with fans model there is even some limitations about comfort of using. while I can lay the m1 air down on my bed or sofa and be sure that dust will never get inside, with 13inch model you'll cover the holes and it'll suck it all in and you'll have to clean it, so you'd better use it on the table all the time. and also cause air gets thinner to your side it's more comfortable to just keep it on your lap, while typing some scripts (end editing too). the sides of my 15inch pro are just cutting into my hands overtime and leaving marks. battery was enough for me, started editing at 1 pm at 100% and at 8 pm was at 11%, and that's with second 1080p monitor! if there are some guys who bought m1 pro 13, please share your thoughts about it.

Mac Mini ordered with 16 gigs of memory, 1TB storage and Final Cut Pro. Adobe creative suite user. I figure the chances of Adobe not optimizing for M1 is pretty close to zero.
Great video! I’m deciding which to return, same m1 spec Mac mini vs MacBook Pro. Mac mini hundreds cheaper, but MacBook Pro has some awesome things too, portable, speakers really good, I like the Touch Bar, but I’m 90% tethered to a monitor. Decisions!
Thank you for all videos you made for M1 MacBooks. I was hesitating to buy M1 MacBook because of compatibility for some apps, but thanks to your reviews I ordered M1 MacBook Pro, and haven't regretted. Thank you for your hard work.
As a college student, I’d recommend a MacBook Air! It’s cheap, elegant, fast and can do all academic work! More importantly, it has a webcam and mic, which is critical for meetings. I wouldn’t recommend the Mac mini, because work from home will be temporary, and if you’re a college student with 4 more years left on campus, go for mobility! Trust me, when living on campus, you’d be better off studying in the library or a coffee shop than on your desktop in a shared dorm room
Canceled my M1 pro 16gb order & got the base air, will upgrade to M1X for my pro when it comes out, also you can stream games on things like Nvidia GeForce at 120 FPS max settings so you don’t technically need windows to game AAA games
Students should consider the student discount offered and go with the base macbook air, in my opinion. A super competent computer for 899 USD after discount. Upgrade storage if budget permits or honestly just buy an SSD or cloud based storage if you're a student. I was an engineering student and had a 256gb MBP and I was perfectly fine.
I brought MBA with the 8/8/512 combo but with hindsight I should have got the MBP 8/8/512. My reason for saying this is, I generally just do a lot of web browsing and RUclips watching, for which it is fine. However I also use it to render my GoPro Max 360 files and on 8 min clip with some reframing it gets very hot! Shorter clips its fine, but longer then it gets very hot. I know GoPro are working on an optimised version on the GoPro Player which I hope will help with the heat. But saying all this I love my MBA just wish I brought a MBP grrr UPDATE: Just spoke with Amazon and going to return and buy a MBP :) Not really the hassle I needed but better do it now while I still can
@GuruTheCoder I found the MBA got hot rendering a 8 min GoPro Max (360 clip). As I intend to do a lot of 360 video I decided to return the MBA and get a MBP with 16 ram instead to insure longevity, these are expensive pieces of kits and this all-in-one chip is a new concept for Macs so didn't want to take the risk of early failure.
I respect your point of view on getting the maxed-out storage but instead I am picking up the Macbook pro 13 M1 base variant with 256GB and the Samsung T7 (1TB) SSD today !!!
just an FYI, buying extra storage in your laptop is usually super expensive. If you want to save a couple bucks just get the 256gb ssd and carry around another cheap hdd or ssd. I personally don't have another 200 dollars to drop on storage.
The biggest reason you should not buy an M1 Mac is if you are developer that uses Docker. As of 12th Dec 2020, no Docker support. It should be coming, but some people's workflow won't work.
Great review Gary. I think I straddle a few different camps so I'm planning on a mini with external monitor via HDMI as a home computer. It gives me the option to also plug my work laptop in via DP. However I'll wait for the new M1X chip announcement and redesign as it looks like it could be worth the wait.
M1 is not for a professional like me who uses lots of third party software, so got myself MBP 16” . Don’t care of the battery, if I can not run my softwares properly ;) Those who can wait, would suggest to wait for at least a year or two, hopefully will have some better looking laptop with less bezel, Apple has been using same chassis for more than 7 years with the same 13.3” 🙄 . Hopefully will see 14 inch MBP with a new design within couple of years.
Hi love your channel. Watch everytime you come out with new content. Im a Windows user but has always wanted to test Mac. And finally the price is normal. Im editing in Davinci Resolve and are thinking of testing out final cut. Is the Mac mini good enough for edit 4K. Have a wonderful day, greetings from Norway🇧🇻
As a student, I think students should get the M1 Air so they have that portability when things go back to normal and they need a laptop everywhere they go. I’m going to be purchasing the Air soon and with education pricing it will only cost $900 for the base model. Plus I am trading in 2 of my old laptops for an even bigger discount so the laptop will end up costing less than half the original price. Everyone who can take advantage of the education pricing and has something to trade in should definitely do the same to save a lot of money!
It’s a custom configuration, so they have to make it in the factories in and then they’re shipped. It will take a while, since they don’t have 16 gb models made already
I am an adobe user but I figured it would be okay for personal use and setting up projects. I have a main computer I do all my video editing on. I figured the m1 mac book pro could be a secondary machine for personal and maybe light editing in premiere pro which would eventually be transferred over to the bigger computer anyways. Love the video review! Now you have me thinking about the mac mini!!
Should you get ANY upgrades? I'm not so sure. The base models are dirt cheap right now, but the upgrades are quite pricey. I think that the same people that want to bump up the ram and ssd will want to get the redesigned MBP with 4 ports, new display and more importantly the M1x chip in 8-10 months from now. My tip: get the base model now and save your upgrade money to pimp the M1x instead.
I’m waiting for the redesigned 14” or 16” MacBook Pro with the MX1 chip. I’m currently saving up for it. For Cyber Monday, I could have bought a M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB 512 SSD for $150 off, which was really tempting, but I need to save that money. If I could afford it, I would probably get the entry level MacBook Air to experiment with M1 now. But when the MX1 Macs come out, I’ll be glad I waited.
Buying Mac mini isn't so easy. As a photo editor/ print worker I'd need to find a good monitor with 95%+ Adobe RGB screen, buy a webcam, keyboard, wires, SD card reader, speakers, mouse, etc.
I got the M1 Mac Mini 16gb/512gb I have a Base Model 16" MBP for on the go needs, plus I have Windows installed on it if I need software I just can find on MacOS
I have ordered Mac Mini 512 /16 gb on Saturday night and the delivery date is Dec 30th, I took two hours to make a decision to order and delivery date changed from 15th Dec to 30 the Dec. I think Apple is flooded with orders.
I ordered the Air with 16gb ram but 512 gb memory. Originally I ordered the 8Gb with 1tB but changed after seeing reviews that the 8gb does not handle multicam well in FCP which is my workflow (2-3 camera multicam of up to 2 hour source files). I would have preferred 1tb but I’m on a strict budget. 512 should still allow me 1-2 projects on the AIr and the rest can stay on an external SSD.
Can someone help me? I ordered my MBA like a week ago and it arrives December 3 (already passed) - to December 10 and it hasn’t moved to preparing to ship... can someone tell me how long it should take? Please and thank you

Hi Gary, Just subbed to your Chanel and love your videos. I would like to see a video on what monitor and accessories you think are good for the Mac Mini.
Thanks all the videos helped me decide on the Mac Mini with 16gb RAM and I did upgrade to a TB drive. Figured all my apps would be installed / games if I play WOW again, pictures etc.. but maybe I did not need it :-/ to late now
? Will the Mac mini work, can use iPad as monitoring along with hdmi, cable and Bluetooth key board, as have 2012 late Mac mini got every thing except lack second hdmi when used with dvi
So, basically, “I’d love to recommend the MacBook Air to everyone [...] the MacBook Pro is the most practical choice [...] and I think everyone should buy the Mac mini.” 🤣 Seriously though, love the channel. And they are so close, you could easily buy any one of those machine and be very happy with them. I think the main thing people need to wary of is not over speccing their machine and paying way more than they should. The $700 from the Mac Mini to the $1,900 upgraded MacBook Pro is a big jump. Personally, as someone who video edits, does music production and is also a writer - but works from home for now - I got the Air to use in dock mode, which I can then travel with when the world opens up for business again.
After Effects. Will it run, even if it is not optimized yet? For mobile editing, I am still using a late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro...2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3....getting long in the tooth, so I am looking to upgrade. Will I benefit upgrading to an M1 Pro 16 GB with a 1 TB internal?
Good recommendations except for the Mac Mini without a webcam for students. And it is not mobile for when you can return to campus and want to take it to class.
I already purchased the MBP, but can’t turn down a Sunday video! Lions game and RUclips! Using as a student who does photography and slight video editing

Just ordered a Mac Mini to replace my 7yr old iMac 27". 16Gb memory. 512Gb HDD. I. CAN'T. WAIT!
Now the biggest question is what monitor!?!
Waiting for my M1 MBP to arrive, really excited
I ordered my air with 512g 16ram two weeks ago. And it still haven’t shipped yet.
It’s a custom configuration, so they have to make it in the factories in and then they’re shipped. It will take a while, since they don’t have 16 gb models made already
my base model is taking 2 weeks too...i think its supply chain issues OR demand exceeding expectations
My base model is taking forever too.
Just ordered a pro with 16ram, same issues. Can’t wait lol
Meanwhile 750$ got you a 1660 and 3600 with 16gb and 1tb ssd this last month on sale @ newegg. All assembled with win. 10
Loving your m1 review series.
Well thanks so much!
I ordered an m1 MacBook Pro a few weeks ago and it ships until January... demand is so high and everything it’s sooooo delayed ☹️
Thank you for the valuable information! Thanks to your audience who ran you down for this content! Good work everyone:D
I don't want to overspend since new processors and SOCs are coming out next year. I bought the M1 base Air and sold 16" and 2020 13" MacBook Pros.
Watching this on my new M1 Air XD
Agreed on everything, it is just that their laptop design (those thick bezels) becomes so last year..or better to say last decade
I got the M1 Mac Mini 16gb/512gb
I have a Base Model 16" MBP for on the go needs, plus I have Windows installed on it if I need software I just can find on MacOS
can you make a vid about those who switch from windows to macs OS🥺 cause macs OS look difficult for a beginner like me
I have ordered Mac Mini 512 /16 gb on Saturday night and the delivery date is Dec 30th, I took two hours to make a decision to order and delivery date changed from 15th Dec to 30 the Dec.
Please and thank you
Bricked my first M1 Mini using migration assistant and factory reset, but replacement is on the way. Another 16GB with 1TB.
How did you brick it?
@@DB-lr6kl migration assistant from an Intel Mac got stuck. Did a factory reset and it prevented booting. This has since been addressed from what I’ve read.
I only play World of Warcraft. M1 ordered.
Thank you, this was the most useful video for my question
Is it possible for you to touch on coding? I’m about to be a computer science student next year and they usually use xcode, jupyter, css and all those other softwares
MbA with 16gb ram
Gary, how did the M1 air affect your iPad usage? You mentioned something about that but didn’t go into detail, maybe this will be a good idea for a video ;)
I still prefer WIntel laptops second hand for absolute value and savings. But for people who need performance and value combined you can't beat an M1 Mac.
If I am a student and am choosing between the air and pro, which is better?
What did you study?
I just bought the MacBook Pro base model but it got delayed three weeks. Bummer but still excited.
Gary come one man off the apple train and let’s see some camera videos. You missed all the great ones that came out this year. Still love you videos. I need some pillars of action in my life.
I don’t get why the prices here in germany are so much more expensive. Or are those prices without taxes? I payed 2085€ including taxes for this 16gb 1TB MacBook Pro you’ve mentioned. That’s 2526$ with the current exchange rate.
Perfectly explained in simple language :)
hustle up developers, i need that M1 and bootcamp and linux next year. it won’t be that hard right?
Hi Gary,
Just subbed to your Chanel and love your videos. I would like to see a video on what monitor and accessories you think are good for the Mac Mini.
Thanks all the videos helped me decide on the Mac Mini with 16gb RAM and I did upgrade to a TB drive. Figured all my apps would be installed / games if I play WOW again, pictures etc.. but maybe I did not need it :-/ to late now
I'm using a mid 2012 macbookPro dual core Yup DUAL core Intel i5 which won't even download final cut. Should I just cop the M1 Pro
Ya the pro is pretty good, you can edit, play games, download some crap, but it's very loud on zoom
I was waiting for this video THANKS EVERYDAY DAD
The answer for me is the eventual 16 inch with the M1X or M2 and when windows on ARM works properly on it
? Will the Mac mini work, can use iPad as monitoring along with hdmi, cable and Bluetooth key board, as have 2012 late Mac mini got every thing except lack second hdmi when used with dvi
Have you made a video about affordable monitors, keyboards, and mice we can use for mac mini or macbook setups?
Thanks for saying that Rimworld works well, I was struggling to find much info on how it runs :D Games I play mostly is WoW and Rimworld too :D I was on fence whatever to get windows laptop with GPU or M1, might go for M1 :)
Should I get the Macbook pro 13inch with 16gb ram and 256gb ssd or should I get the macbook air 13inch with 16gb ram and 256gb ssd or should I wait for the macbook pro 14inch or even the 16inch.
I think i am set on getting the M1 mac mini 16 gig ram but what monitor? Is it possible to get a good monitor for around $350. I will be using it for my youtube channel editing videos on iMovie. Thank you if you can get a chance to answer.
I’m usin the Asus Pro Art 27inchn1440p. Pretty color accurate
Please make a video on iPad Pro 12.9 versus MacBook Pro M1
Hi Gary, I love your videos! Thanks for the great recommendations! Are you going to update your recommendations that you list under: "What gear I recommend"?
Thanks again!
I have a 10th gen MacBook Pro 13, should I sell it and get the M1 air? I would be able to sell it and get the air with 16gb ram & 512gb ssd for roughly the same price. Any advice is really appreciated!
Still using my 2015 MBP and I'm waiting for M1 16" MBP before I upgrade 💛
Docker and virtualization aren't available yet either. I'd say unless you're doing pure web development, don't get one.
I’m subscribing because of the Augusta University hoodie ... that’s my second home
Question: if the 3 games I play are optimized and can run on a 2015 MBP, is it not worth it?
7:38 i feel that bro 🍻🙏
...buy any of them ...just wait for the app updates or learn final cut
