As a hobbyist , this was my go to lens for almost all casual shoots, travel etc. till its motor died. I used it for 5+ years continuous and I still owns and use it. It is so convenient in travel. Its best apertures for my copy is from f/4 or f/5.6 to f/9. It constituted good enough portion of my shorts due to its compactness. Of course other 35 versions of Nikon/Sigma/Tamron were pretty impressive and I used them many times, but this lens was so attached to me that I went back to it on every travel I made, if there are no specific purpose or otherwise.

I use this lens on my fullframe Nikon D600 and its a very good performer on FX as well. Of course there is a noticeable amount of vignetting but for the price (considered the price of 480€ for the FX compatible 35mm from nikon) its absolutely a strongly recommended lens in my opinion. You can easily create a default import setting for the lens in lightroom (or whatever you prefer to use) to cancel out the vignetting.
Sharpness is at least with a 24MP fullframe sensor totally fine if you dont look in the extreme corners of the image.
Down down to i think f4 to f5.6 gets the vignetting less and starts to increase as you stop further down. I for my point of view dont buy a 1.8 lens to use it that much stopped down especially because I own a 28-75mm f2.8 so thats not a problem at all.
In conclusion its even with a fullframe camera an excellent choice if you do photography as a hobby and dont want to spend four times the price just to get a little less vignetting
PS: greetings from germany and keep up the great work, i really enjoy every single of your videos

Indeed. Though the quality should be improved. See the Ef-m 32mm f/1.4, which is superior. I want to see a similar Nikon lens for Aps-c with Z mount. Then I could replace my Canon M50.

Yes Finally the legit budget lens. Chris the lens works like full-frame on Nikon DSLRs with 95 % coverage. The focus ring can be made smoother by opening the lens and loosening the focus ring holder.

if you think about buying it for a full frame: up to f4 there is only slight vignetting, from f8 upwards you cant just edit it out with lightroom and actually have to use it with a DX-crop. So buying this and a cheaper zoom lens should have you covered for all circumstances and apertures. works for me as a badly paid semi-professional with a D850 at least.

It also works fine on my D850 in FX mode, minimal vignetting easily fixed in PS.

He should look into getting a dummy Nikon adapter (with mechanical aperture linking) for his Sony camera.
He won't be able to get exact apertures with a solution like this but you can guess close enough.

The maths says 52.5MM, but I find it to be a little wider than a 'normal' 50mm focal length. On the D60, I find it to be about 47.5mm focal length (apsc equivalent). But close enough for jazz, as they say.
Edit: It's a lovely lens though, really sharp and lovely to shoot with. I have the stock zoom and the 18-300mm zoom lenses but the 35mm f/1.8 is my walk-around lens and I wouldn't change it. For the price it's an awesome prime focus lens, and it gives you that 50mm (approx) equivalent that ramps up your photo skills...

Camera brands are sadly funny... This is in my opinion the very best normal DX lens for Nikon, low cost, versatile focal and quite nice aperture; literally a "wider 50mm", but Nikon's 24mm 2.8, another nice focal lenght are far more expensive, while canon 24mm 2.8 for aps-c is low cost and the best wide-normal lens for crop sensor, but canon's goddam 35mm just can't be cheap, even 35mm FD lens can get more expensive than it's siblings, EF 35 f2 is considered rare and the current 35mm has IS, nice... but a also bigger price tag.

shame that the z7 doesn't allow you to shoot on FF. on my recently upgraded d750 I've fallen in love with this lens again - it does have a heavy vignette when focusing far or at aperture 4+ though, but it can be corrected or cropped and the quality for the price is astounding!

I totally agree. I don't understand what they are doing. The Z50 was released more than 1 year ago, no new DX Z lens was announced. It seems that for the Z50 there is nothing comparable to an Ef-m 32mm f/1.4 regarding weight and image quality at f/1.4.

  • @rishiraz1993

I am wondering if there is a workaround to bypass the crop mode restriction on mirrorless cameras, as this lens has a large enough image circle to cover FF sensor, with only a little vignetting at extreme corners. It was possible to use this lens in FF mode on older DSLRs, and it was a nice affordable walkaround lens. I will be glad to know if there is a way to cheat the Z cameras (but without damaging the camera or lens of course).
