Best 26 minutes I've spent today. RRR was our family fave, and the music still resonates every time the originals come on the radio. "Tarquin should learn to AVOID mines!"
As a kid who really didn't care for racing games, I LOVED this one. I'm so annoyed that I sold my cart years ago. I'd totally pop that back in the SNES today.
My dad played this game when he was in youth age. Then he got the game on his old laptop with an emulator and showed me the game. Now I absolutely love this game. I even bought an old SNES with the game just for us to play. Then we were so good, that it became boring. So I looked up the rrr hack v16. A custom enhanced version of the game with tons of changes like highly skilled AI, a lot of more cars, special upgrades and even more 80s rock songs. It is so much fun and your enemies are able to fight back pretty well. But the best is that you are able to play it up to 6 players. Per local network. It is so incredibly well done.
This is one of those games that people either loved, or never played. Best isometric racing game ever. Driving a yellow sports car with tank treads on an alien planet, blasting 'bad to the bone', 'paranoid', and 'born to be wild' ... good times.
I was the main programmer on rock n roll racing until the end when I left to do wing commander for software toolworks. I could fill in more details if you ever wanted to hear about it.
Seriously????? I Have to thank you so Much, this game makes me love Rock Music, Cars and engines. Now I'm 35 years old, play Guitar and I started my career as an auto mechanic. Sorry for My english, I'm Italian
thats awesome man! yea, believe it or not the rock N roll aspect of it was only done very late in the process. It originally was going to be named RPM II@@MaianoRacingTeam
Awesome video man. The presentation and editing is top notch. I'll subscribe for more. Rock n roll racing is one of my favourite games. I remember being like 10 or 11 playing this back in the day and loving the music, my dad heard it and said he knows these songs, he then put his vinyls on and played those tracks, my little kid brain melted and that's probably the beginning of my love for rock and metal music. The blizzard arcade collection is great especially for the hd version just sucks they didn't get the license for paranoid. Blizzard should make a new game.
Can't watch the whole thing right now but boy am I hyped!! Thank you Daniel this is super awesome, loved this game when I was a kid! Edit: watched and it was one of the best so far!
debatable... Compared to F Zero X, Starfox and DK country to me are far better. Same as songs like Dr Wileys Castle. I mean I wouldn't say Paranoid is even the best Black Sabbath song on Nintendo considering a certain game has rip offs of Black Sabbath and Metallica ... A certain James Rolfe talked about it. I mean Paranoid is shite. Compared to Planet Caravan its so poor.
This game was so much fun , was easy for friends that came round to pick up and play as well and you would end up playing for hours. Hearing that music brings back so many memories, will always hold a place near to my heart.
I think around the time of Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt, you also had S.C.A.R.S. and Rollcage (and now Grip). But you start seeing overlapping Venn diagrams if you veer too far. At that point you start getting Extreme G Racing, Vigilante 8 and so on. Ah, fun times...
I haven’t watched full video yet, but this is def the history of a game I never thought I wanted! One of my favorite game ever and loved how it was a gateway for young metal fans in the making. Thank you for this - just another reason why this channel is top tier in gaming content
And let's not forget for the Atari ST and Commodore 64 (and I think Amiga) Super Cars and Super Cars II. Absolutely loved those games, and fantastic multiplayer.
I love watching your videos. I stopped playing video games ten or so years ago, mainly by necessity; I moved to another country in another continent and didn’t have money to buy a console. Now that I do, I don’t bother, because I don’t like the direction gaming has gone through in the last decade. I only play indie games, occasionally. Yet, I am a sucker for nostalgia, and as a 90s kid, your channel is my go to source for that. God damn… gaming sure was fantastic in the 90s. What a time to be a teenager! Thanks for doing this great content!
Fun Fact: Back in the mid 80's there was a VHS video series made by Simitar Productions that was called Motorock which were used as promotional material for the USHRA and their live events. The videos in the series were: Monster Madness Moto-X Blood, Sweat & Gears
Back then I had a pirate RRR cart. They removed the chip that generated passwords, removed the animation transition to other planet and it sometimes triggered an offset colision bug that made the game unplayable. I didn't care, the game was awesome! Also Buggy Run for the Master System!
I loved Red Asphalt growing up; I actually preferred it over Twisted Metal. I had no idea it had anything to do with Rock n' Roll Racing until years later.
This was one of my favourite games on the SNES and I remember spending all my birthday money it. Even though I sold that copy back in the day, I now have a near mint in box version, that I picked up a few years back. Oh the memories 😊
I've been needing this video for years!! Thanks for giving love to Racing/Destruction Set. That game was so crazy I was convinced it was a ROM hack of some other real Construction Set. Landmines on tracks made with the gravity of Jupiter's moons. Awesome!!
ZZ Top wasn't in the game, so not quite sure why they are mentioned especially as you followed it with Led Zep declining. There was one thing the Megadrive had over the SNES version though, Golden Earring - Radar love was not on the SNES version.
Olaf jams into first Rip comes in second Shred is in Another Timezone! ...,, i rmbr being little and renting this game from Midway rentals and playing this and super mario world ..BEST TIME OF MY LIFE
Regarding the blizzard arcade collection, I bought it the other day as a massive Blackthorne fan, (also, where's my sequel with Shark surfing Blizzard??) But a few sources I found online seemed to reference the collection only being available for sale for one year, so being delisted after March this year. Not sure if that's true or not, or if it's only referencing some of the PC versions because those collections are a bit different... But once I've gotten over my current Steamworld Heist addiction I'll be diving into the collection, I've never played Lost Vikings and only had a few brief plays of RnR Racing at a friend's back in the day.
Call me weird but i can't help my self but to love the Mega Drive version music, it might be that i had MD version as a kid and i'm used to hearing it but i just love MDs twangy music. Also would you consider doing complete history of Blackthorne and/or The Lost Vikings?
To me, RC Pro Am 2 was one of the best NES games and Rock N Roll Racing was a spiritual successor with a killer soundtrack and one of the best SNES games. It will always be in my top list of best SNES games.
i liked rock n roll racing 2 so much...i own 2 copys hahah incase one died, the music...is insane, sure the gameplay was eh, but somehow...the music tracks cut into the scene changes, which blew my mind, and the top 1 and 2 cars, were notorsouly hard to get upto, so that was a challenge every race
I always hated how the game progressed from a monster truck, a rocket car, a tank and then... to a stupid hovercraft as the final vehicle. Usually I would keep the monster truck until the tank was buyable and then stick with it thru the hovercraft level, but it made really hard to remain competitive.
I knew this game wasn't a fever dream, I once played it at the house of an acquaintance of my mom, she most likely got scared to hear Black Sabbath played and yanked the controller of me, and never got to see it again, well until the battle net launcher reminded me of it
Oh my god, me and my friends used to play the RRR to death. I remember how mad we used to get at each other for missing the enemies and ending up killing eachother instead therefore fking up the ffinish position 😀
A very good, similarly timed history video on this game was uploaded by arcade games & ports researcher, PatmanQC, 11 months after this video on mid December 2022.
Starting to work on a similar top down race game and would like to make it perspective view like in this game. I played this game back at the start of 2000's on my friend's Sega.
I vote for a ninja garden complete history Great video thank you. My only complaint is that you did not say what the blizzard arcade trilogy was released on. I had to rewind it several times to pause it to get the Flash of the Nintendo switch symbol at the bottom.
Now that Microsoft owns blizz they need to redo this right on modern consoles and pc. Rocket league is super popular with even non gamers, this could be epic.
The original mega drive game was brilliant, and I never imagined the SNES version could be better, but it's just that little bit more in a way how to explain. Music not interupted by Larry for example.
I did indeed enjoy this video! Thanks for this one Slope! And about Blizzard? All I can say is "How the mighty is falling...." I just wish that Blizz could remove themselves from the malignant tumor that is Activision.
My best friend and I absolutely LOVED this game! SNES version of course! Even though I was all about the Sega Genesis at the time the sound chip in the Super Nintendo was WAY better...! Rock N Roll racing was one of my favorite games from that era. SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY!! This is great DJ Slope! Always appreciate the deep dives you do!
I don't get how you thought this was better than RC Pro AM 2 or Super Offroad.
Man, what a beast. This, Top Gear 2 and a two-liter of Barq’s root beer = the essential Friday night of co-op craziness with the middle school set.
Oh man, I used to love Top Gear 2! I never hear anyone talk about it but that's one I owned and loved as a kid.
What do you mean Barqs has bite?
i do love me some Barq's (root) BEER.

I’d say arguably one of best racing games ever
One of my childhood games I played with my brothers. This game and Road Rash 1 & 2 were our favorites.

I´m playing it right now, still very fun to play. One of my favourite racing game. They should make a new version of it.
One of the few games where I got so good I couldn’t play anymore because no one would get near me.
Bro I know what your saying. Did you beat it on warrior with the bug? The ice level was harder the the last level.
This game's music really gets you pumped to play it everytime.
One of my favorite 16bit games
Can't watch the whole thing right now but boy am I hyped!! Thank you Daniel this is super awesome, loved this game when I was a kid!

The SNES version of "Paranoid" is some of the best music ever put on the system.
debatable... Compared to F Zero X, Starfox and DK country to me are far better. Same as songs like Dr Wileys Castle.

ho no, you did not mention the Follin brothers amazing job recreating these iconic songs in snes style.
Whenever I hear "Bad To The Bone" I can't help but picture Arnie's boots haha.
Ah, "Sesame's Treat" by the Smarties. I'd constantly call into MARS FM back in the day to request that song.
This game was so much fun , was easy for friends that came round to pick up and play as well and you would end up playing for hours. Hearing that music brings back so many memories, will always hold a place near to my heart.
I still hear " Olav Last Lap" when i close my eyes.

What a game. many hours of family fun.
This and streets of rage 2 were my childhood.
this game got my mates dad into playing games just cause of the music tracks, he impressed us singing the words while playing
The only racing game with this view that i ever enjoyed. Can actually drive and its a blast. Peter Gunn theme for the win.
Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road.
Loved this game as a kid and still do! So glad you did a complete history on it! Great job!

Great video. I guess I'll have to pickup the arcade archive
Loved this game still have the original SNES cart.
Loved this game back when, love it now. May eventually get the collection just for it.
Absolutely loved this game.
As soon as I heard you say it's available on the blizzard home arcade collection u went to go download it lol
Another really great video
Brilliant video as always, mate! I've always wanted to give Red Asphalt a try, gives me Rollcage vibes

I always wondered why they never made a second one and had no idea they had ever made it until this video.
They DEFINITELY should have stuck with that overhead view or the cars instead of changing the formula of the whole reason people enjoyed this game.
I understand that times change and games such as Twisted Metal and Ridge Racer, Need For Speed etc.
They still could have upgraded the graphics and courses and vehicles and made it much smoother with the consoles that were out at the time and I'm sure it would've done well, especially for people who remembered and enjoyed the first game.
It would be so cool to get a remake of Rock N Roll Racing with a graphics update and stick to the same formula as the original, but add new vehicles and courses.
Put those old instrumental rock songs and add more... WOW! That's a game I would buy!
They could even do a live service type and unlock new things for cars and let you paint and upgrade your vehicles and driver...
