  • READ:
    In honor of the retirement of the venerated R32 subway cars which have been in service for 58 years, the MTA hosted one final set of retirement runs on Sunday, January 9th, 2022. The 8-car train ran 4 round trips between 96th Street, Manhattan and Brighton Beach on the Q line. The first two cars on the north end of the train, 3360 & 3361 were given a number of cosmetic modifications to bring their appearance close to what it was when these cars were first delivered in 1964.
    At the conclusion of the revenue trips, the 8-car train was split in half and joined by an additional 6-car train from Coney Island Yard. Together the 3 trainsets ran in a final send-off parade between Brighton Beach and Kings Highway before returning to CI Yard to end the day. Enjoy the action =)
    A buddy of mine was given the honor of being one of the operators on the train. Check out his RUclips channel here: / @worldwidetransitsimul...

    A perfect way to say goodbye to one of MTAs special subway types that’s been in service for such a long time. Awesome R32 catches

    I can't watch all of these R32 videos because I tear up trying to power through. I am distraught that I couldn't make it to NYC for any of the Sundays they were running these units one final time. Thanks for recording the memories.
    I honestly say this from the bottom of my heart that I will miss these units running on the BMT Broadway and the IND 8th Avenue lines all day. The last railfan-friendly cars that contained front windows are now gone.
    We've truly lost warriors. RIP.

      I feel for you. But I hope these videos bring back great memories. Your last sentence said it all. So true, the R32s definitely were the last railfans car to let one enjoy the front window view.

    Wow. Talk about memories. When they first came out I was 19 and took them to college every day. I remember how impressed I was at how classy they looked; They were quite the new thing. I had previously been riding a mix of triplexes and standards dating back to the 1920s, and 1950s vintages that had no character at all. I'm in the suburbs now and only take the subway occasionally. Haven't seen one in so long I thought they were taken out of service years ago. Glad to see they were still going strong until much more recently than I thought.

    And if not for a couple of f***ing foamers, that last set of R32s would have been a 10-car set! Thus the shortened 8-car set that rode off into transit heaven.

    Fond memories standing in the window of the first car of the N Train from 20th Ave Brooklyn to 34th street and Madison Square Garden to see the Rangers. Didn't realize back in the early 70s how lucky I was to use that service for a $0.30 token. My dad was a NYTA Road Car Inspector and he loved the R32. Said it was the best job he ever had.

    Wow they even kept the original head unit with the route classification lights. The D train was white and green. The N Sea Beach was red and white the 4th Ave local RR was green and green. These trains were lighter than the R30 cars and they accelerated much quicker. Upon closer inspection it was a fake. A thin sheet of metal with painted on marker lights. :(

    TO TRANSITUSA:
    YOU TEAR UP? I REALLY TEAR UP BECAUSE I WAS 24 YEARS OLD WHEN I OPERATED THEM ON THE "D" LINE IN 1968. I OPERATED EVERY CAR IN TRANSIT MUSEUM & THE R32 CARS WERE THE BEST. RELATIVELY SIMPLE, RUGGED, WITH GREAT EXEL AND BRAKES. SAVE COMPLEXITY FOR SPACE TRAVEL. JUST ADD A/C AND KEEP THEM FOREVER.
    SIGNED,
    OLD C/R, M/M, TSS.

    4:36 So I see this a lot but I don't know why. Why are there 3 rails laid down on the ties. Is it a stiffener...does another train with a narrower gauge use the same route?

    • @dkeithtag
      @dkeithtag 2 года назад

      The rail
      Is an emergency rail to help prevent a derailed train from running off of the structure.

    • @edwardgellender90
      @edwardgellender90 2 года назад

      I can tell you 100% that there is nothing at a narrower gauge. That track is pretty far out - about a foot and a half from one of the rails. I have seen similar, but only about 4 inches out, They tend to appear in areas where clearances are tight and I I have always assumed it is a safety feature to limit how far the train can go from the nominal position if it should derail. This one has me baffled, though.

      The first ever trip in 1964 had the same sign but said "First of 600 new brightliners for a better subway"
      Very very cool they did that. Glad they went all out for this send off, especially the frank Sinatra new york song over the bridge on the last south bound trip and the extra run bys at the end
