Ngl, I kinda love the characters in this game. Despite being turned into actual toys, there is no "immersion" for the couple. They constantly call the situation's bullshit and act like real people. When you purposefully grief the other, they also commentate on it. And in a more "childish" game, the Book would've been portrayed as a good guy. But I like how he is very clearly portrayed as an overzealous asshole, despite his "good intentions."
Some games that "cause people to break up" are just teaching people how to recognize they don't have a good relationship. Some people genuinely don't know how to recognize a toxic relationship from within one.

@@chenzhang5212 i will say, the point of the game isn't about just any relationship. a lot of divorces happen because of money problems or other kinds of animosity between the couple, which the protagonists of it take two are not dealing with. the relationship that the protagonists are in was one that was incredibly loving but they both just got too busy and forgot what they meant to each other. they don't actually dislike each other, they just don't communicate. as someone who has experienced the same feelings with my partner before and then rekindling that love, i can relate a lot to the protagonists in this game. their relationship is supposed to represent a couple going through divorce, it's not supposed to represent every couple that goes through divorce.

Being held hostage and then having to solve surreal problems in a sneaky roundabout way to understand eachother's perspective so that both parties can get a full picture of what got them here, which will help them decide what to do afterward. Everything that happens to them is designed to drive them closer and help them work together, enforced by some wizard's enchanted book or something
I think the idea is to shift the focus. Giving people other problems to look at for a bit before coming back to the original can sometimes be useful! Sometimes focusing on one topic for too long will make something small bigger than what it is.
