    How many reps of the 225 bench press do they want you to do? I can do 15 reps of the 225 and 275 is my max. I’m a 6’1 230 lbs linebacker/defensive end hybrid and my 40 is a 4.65

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +18

      For my tryout they didn't have me test it because I was a skill position. They only had offensive/Defensive lineman and I think linebackers do it. I do remember them saying if you can't at least hit 10 reps of 225 don't even bother sitting down on the bench lol but this was at Ohio State and everywhere is gonna be different. They would want to see some pretty high numbers though to impress them, but if you're young and have eligibility left they know they can mold you in their weight program so it won't be the only thing they look into. Also that 40 time is really good for that size, if you hit that time at a tryout you will get looked at for sure. Lastly, if you're hitting 15 reps of 225 you should be able to bench more than 275 probably, that's interesting - maybe check up on your form and stuff. Hope that helps!

    Football has been on my mind a lot lately. I played football for a few months at a local Juco College about a year ago, but I left for personal reasons. However, I'm 19, and I'm looking to transfer to a local 4 year sometime next year (only bc I won't be able to transfer this year due to the amount of credits I still need to earn). However, I'm very optimistic going forward knowing that even tho I'll be 20 this time around next year, that I can still push for a walk on spot here at the local universities football team. I understand what comes with being a walk on, and how there really aren't any expectations for you. I felt I was a little snubbed coming out of high school on scholarships due to how small my school was, so I'm kind of used to the idea. But, that's what motivates me, I'm sort of under the radar right now, literally no one knows who I am, and with the right amount of confidence and perseverance I feel I can make my dreams come true. Great video! It surely is good to know what to expect for the most part! I'm tellin you I'll be back here next year letting you know how things went. ✌🏽

Use not getting a scholarship out of HS as motivation - but understand you also didn’t get one for a reason and work on those reasons. Make no excuses and go get to work brotha! Goodluck💪🏼😎

    Hey Clay,
    I really enjoyed this video man thank you so much. I am currently a senior in high school and am looking to walk on to play D1 football at whatever college I go to. I'm really interested in TCU and UCLA right now. My season was ended early with a torn ACL, so I don't have any offers. I play safety and am around 5'10 170. Any advice on how to make a team under these circumstances? I definitely think I pass the eye test with my cut physique but should I focus on gaining weight more or speed? I am athletic and pretty fast as of right now, but what 40 time should I aim for as a DB? I would really appreciate a couple tips man. Thanks.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +2

      Hey Man! Glad you enjoyed. This is going to be an odd answer because I think you should always be trying to gain muscle and get bigger and stronger; However, the most important thing going into the actual tryout for a DB is speed and agility. I was 6ft 180-185 and probably under 9% body fat when I did it and I can say it really didn't matter much. They probably won't even check your strength/size as a DB coming in out of high school because they know they will put it on you. So always be working out and gaining strength and size, but ultimately make speed and agility your priority. Aim for a 4.5 40. Even a 4.59 looks great. Anything under 4.6 is eye catching enough to give you a real look. Train 40s and Shuttles a LOT. Then work on general footwork and ball work if you have time. If you can get a 4.5 40 and a low 4.00 to 4.15 shuttle you will stand out. Then they will probably have you play around and do some position drills. Hope that helps, subscribe or shoot me a DM on Instagram if you need anything else brother.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      I know their tryout process is different. They usually start with sending film to the special teams GA's or something and then like kick in front of them or at like camps somewhere. I specifically remember there being a kicker in my tryout group though and they treated him like us and he ran the 40 and stuff. I'm sure they kicked after the general testing was done or something! Pretty sure it's separate though. Check with the staff beforehand, every school is probably different on that.

    • @KINGF4NCYP4NTS
      @KINGF4NCYP4NTS 5 лет назад +1

      Thanks man. This question might be a little over your head but maybe being around the team you can help answer this. I’m a good kicker, comfortable from long distance and have solid kickoffs. The only problem is the school I’m trying out for has 5 kickers already on the roster. Even if I hit my kicks in tryouts, are my odds of making the team extremely limited since there’s already 5 kickers on the roster? You can be blunt if you think I probably won’t make it

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +1

      Bradley you can look at it two ways, either they have 5 kickers cus none of them are that good and they haven’t settled on one yet and are open to others, or that they’re maxed out on kickers. But either way that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, don’t worry about stuff outside of your control anyway, you can’t change that. And to be totally honest, it’s all about how you perform, if you can show you’re clearly better than some of those kickers they will probably take you and bump them out. College coaches care about performance and results...and they love competition so if you do well there’s a shot. Now if they have 5 kickers and you mess up then no they probably don’t need you, hope that helps a little! Control what you can and try anyway cus the regret of not knowing will kill you later on in life

    Hey this is one of the most helpful videos I've seen about walking on btw. Also, this question might be kinda long so sorry about that. I've never played football for a school and I'm a senior by credit in college at Liberty University, I've only actually been enrolled in college now for a year and a half now. However, I'll probably be spending several more years in school due to my degree choice. I have some previous basketball and track and field experience. In the past year and a half while I've been at school I've been into weightlifting. Right now I'm 6'3'' and 260 pounds and by the time tryouts happen I should be getting 225 for 25-30 reps. I was thinking about trying out for either linebacker or tight end. Would you recommend practicing speed drills or blocking or both? I've been athletic my whole life, but I feel like I really need to start hammering down on practicing footwork and agility. Also, on the walk on info page for LU it says that I need to provide highlights and my previous football coach's recommendation. Obviously, I don't have that cause I've never played the sport officially on a team. Should I contact a coach and explain my situation?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +1

      Hey man! Don't worry about it I'm glad to help out. That's good that you've only been enrolled for a year and a half, you'll have plenty of time to walk on and get the most out of the experience eligibility wise. Go for the next tryout and honestly don't worry too much about footwork and blocking unless you know that the tryouts are going to require it. Usually they just have some simple footwork and agility bag drills just to see if you can move normally (no hitting or blocking or tackling). These aren't even necessarily marked down or evaluated other than by the coach running that station. Generally you will show up, do the 225 test if you're a big position, then do the 40, shuttle, L-cone, and then rotate bag drill stations afterword. Then If they wanna take it further they may have you do slightly more position specific drills. All the footwork, skill work, and drills they will teach you when you're on the team. The tryout will mainly be for seeing if you're an athletic specimen that would be beneficial to the team in some fashion. So to stand out, crush the 225 test and work heavily on form and getting down the BEST times you possibly can get for the speed and agility drills. If they find out you're a big guy who is FAST, you're in for sure. If you can get in contact with a coach and have an email it won't hurt to explain your athletic background and strength and skill set. Maybe provide a video of some impressive athletic or strength stuff instead and a recommendation from a track or basketball coach if you need it. Overall though get info on what will be going on at the tryout and train hyper specific to those drills. You know you'll run a 40 so go and get your 40 form and time down as low as possible. Goal 1 is making the team first, so don't worry about the football part until after you put all your focus into making it and doing well in the drills. Good luck brother, hope you kill it!

    • @powerhouse8310
      @powerhouse8310 5 лет назад +1

      @@clayraterman Thanks man, definitely gonna start training more specifically on those things like the 40. I'm gonna try to stay strong while increasing speed and agility. Is it possible they'll assign me to another position or will they coach me in the position I said I wanted to be during try outs?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      @@powerhouse8310 It is definitely possible they will change your position to whatever they need or see you fit best at. I went out for corner and ended up playing safety and had several friends of mine get changed from trying out for a TE and ending up as a Defensive End and stuff like that. So yes very possible! Just be an athlete and show them that you have impressive size/speed or ideally both and they will find somewhere for you!

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  4 года назад +1

      Some places it's the same process and then when you go to do individual work they would see you punt. Look up how colleges recruit punters and whatever you would do at a punting camp is likely what they would have you do. I know they look for distance, hang times, accuracy, etc.

  • @Derek.Mitchell

    Hey Clay! I'm in the Air Force and plan on using my GI bill to go to Texas. I have 2 years to train in order to be ready to walk on. I'm 5'10 180 and played well at a small school, but was all over the field - I grew up playing running back/slot receiver until my senior year when I started at qb in a spread option offense, and also started at outside linebacker/strong safety on defense. In high school I ran a laser timed 4.6, a reasonably quick shuttle at 4.1, and a maxed out on bench at 255. These numbers have probably dipped because the Air Force is all about calisthenics and distance running. What should I do to bump up those numbers over the next two years and what position should I try out for?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  6 лет назад +10

      Awesome man! My brother is in the Air Force as well. Also I had a few walk on friends who came from the military that did what you are trying to do!. At 5'10 180 the only position they're going to seriously consider playing you at (if you stay around that size) would be a skill position like corner or slot receiver so go for those. 2 years is a long time to get ready for this so you'll wanna make sure you are staying consistent with your training throughout. The running and calisthenics are definitely helpful and great man those numbers are an amazing starting point! If you can get your 40 into the 4.5 range, like literally even 4.59 it will look really impressive. Also I would try your best to get the shuttle as close to a 4.00 flat as possible because your positions will be ALL about quickness, speed, and being shifty. Now obviously you need to be able to catch the ball and run really good routes but that will come as you train. Don't worry too much about the strength and size part, obviously the more muscular you look the better because they will judge you based on looks right off the bat. Definitely tailor your workouts to strength and conditioning and do low reps and try to get stronger and faster. Do shuttles and 40s 2 times a week and track your progress. Get your starts better and your technique better. Workout consistently and keep envisioning the end goal! Let me know if you need anything else, feel free to reach out!

      @@clayraterman Thanks man! Those tenths are going to be tough to drop but I think I've given myself enough time to get back to where I was and improve my stats. I'll probably go for a slot spot but I know that undersized and quick-not-fast inside receivers are a dime a dozen, so I'll have to make sure my route running and ball skills are on point. I can't afford for a ball to hit the turf when the day comes.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  6 лет назад +2

      Yeah you definitely have enough time! They just want to see how good of a practice player you could be for them at first because that is where you will be initially adding value until you work your way up the ranks. For that slot spot you definitely will need to be fast and shifty so like I said shuttle and 40 will be important. And yes definitely make sure your routes and ball skills are on point. Work consistently towards getting those times down and getting your strength up and then incorporate the ball skills and route stuff when you can. Sounds like you have a great shot I look forward to hearing how it goes. Also remember there are eligibility requirements and sometimes they don't have roster spots open etc. so don't get discouraged just keep working towards it and making connections with people there. • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      You’re still in high school so I would assume that everyone should make the team! But if there’s tryouts most of the time they focus on speed and quickness and often don’t test your strength numbers. You’re so young still so definitely keep working out and lifting weights consistently. You need to try and eat more food though and slowly gain some weight cus you’re right at the perfect age to put on some muscle and size now! So try and eat a little more each day until you notice you are putting on weight. Usually I recommend people train specifically for the drills that will be tested at a tryout and try improving their 40 yard dash and shuttle times AS much as possible. But in your case, still being in high school, I would honestly focus on just getting better at football and learning the game more and more; especially as a safety. Doing ball drills, footwork drills, reading QB’s and covering receivers (get friends to run routes and cover them). Doing football related things as much as possible is what you should focus on when your in HS. This is the time to have fun, learn the game, and grow athletically and physically. Don’t worry about maxing out your speed and stuff. If you need to just practice your 40 yard dash starts and shuttle runs. Other than that, keep lifting and get more football experience! Goodluck and try to have fun and enjoy it, don’t put so much pressure on yourself✊🏼

    i’m going to be a freshman at UMass this fall and am pretty much in your boat. I played hs ball but school was a greater priority than playing at a d2 or d3. After doing sprints over the summer my 40 has improved to the 4.5-4.6 range. I’m undersized being 5’8” but considering the UMass team isn’t the best d1, I think I can make the team with a 4.4 40 after time in the weight room. What do you think with measurables like those?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      soloisrollin777 40 sounds good to me! Don’t think you’ll be able to shave THAT much more time off your 40 from hear on out, plus it’s already good enough, but definitely worth a try. Like I say, 40 is gonna be most important number they look at. Then shuttle, then size, etc. but I’d focus on hitting the weight room, working on those drills, and then go tryout! Goodluck brotha

    Hey Clay. I am currently a freshman at the University of Oregon, but I am interested in transferring to Oregon State to walk on. As a quarterback, how important are the drills. Obviously I am throwing, however what other training should a quarterback focus on?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      Yeah QB was a little different I think. I'm pretty sure for us, they still have you go through the tryout and test all of the normal standards, so having more impressive times will for sure be helpful. But if they are a school where the QB runs a lot then still focus a lot on the drills. If not, focus a lot on throwing and accuracy etc. I've never had QB experience so I can't really speak on exact drills. I would try and send in highlight tape or footage and get it in the hands of someone there or make sure you are ready to showcase your skill at a tryout. They're definitely going to want to see you throw so focus on accuracy, route timing, footwork, deep balls, etc. They probably won't care about having you read anything or doing much other than that. They really just want to see raw potential and judge you based on what they see. Overall, focus on throwing a lot and prepare for the drills you know they will have you do! Nothing crazy, just go do the work.

Do you think chances of walking on and making it are bad in my position? And on top of that if you think I have a chance what key things should I work on as a WR to improve? And since I’ve never had the experience of tackling, how should I prepare for hits and everything? Id appreciate all the help and feedback I could get from you and everyone!

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      John T Hey John! So just knowing your height and weight and the fact you’ve never played before without knowing anything else about you or what your skill level is or your combine drill times or what college you’re trying out for I definitely can’t say what your chances are, I have no idea! I do know that there’s no harm in trying out and that you should always go for it though! In terms of preparation for the tryout you need to be practicing your 40 yard dash and shuttle the most, those will be the two most important numbers they see from a receiver. Go to the field and practice your 40 starts and shuttles several times a week, you can worry more about the football stuff once you make the team. Also since you’ve never played, you should run routes and catch passes etc. a few times a week and study the game. In terms of preparing for hits - you can’t really do that, you just naturally harden up your body before you get hit if it happens. But there’s literally zero point in ever thinking about that because you won’t get hit in a tryout, you won’t even play any football it’s just drills. And if you do make the team you can worry about that later. You shouldn’t be scared of that though! You have pads and you can take a hit, it usually doesn’t even hurt unless you get lit up...so don’t waste your energy thinking about that and don’t be scared of it. Hope that helps and goodluck at the tryout💪🏼

    Hey clay this might seem a stupid question but I just got done doing 2 years of community college and plan on attending a university but I want to play football because that’s what I’ve done most of my life. There’s a try out coming up and was just wondering if I could still tryout even though I’m 20 yrs old? Oh and if I am eligible and do make the team am I considered a freshman or junior on the team since I did 2 years of community college? And will I get 4 years of college football or only 2 ??

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      noe drosa you need to first be enrolled at that university to try out (taking 12 or more credit hours). And if you enrolled in community college 2 years ago and took 12 or more credit hours then your clock started. So you should still have 2 years left to play (or potentially 3 if you redshirted or got a medical redshirt). But yeah if you wanna go and try out, do it! Nothing wrong with doing it at 20. I had a friend on my team who was 26 and labeled a freshman with 4 years of eligibility cus he never started college and was just in the military. If you think it’s what u wanna do I always encourage people to try so you don’t look back when you’re older and have regrets👍🏼

    Hey Clay, quick question that I’m hoping you could answer having been around college coaches. I’ve got 3 seasons of high school football under my belt and am heading into my 4th year as starting Center and D Tackle, the issue is I’m 5’11” 230 Ibs. From what I’ve heard, ill never be able to play line unless I hit a major growth spurt sometime soon so, if I were to stay the same height, what would be my best option following my senior season? I’ve given serious consideration to the idea of cutting weight and attempting to play a skill position, but I honestly have no idea. Any response is appreciated!

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      That's a tough one! I wouldn't count on growth spurts though just to be on the safe side. My advice would be to control the things you CAN control. If you feel like you can play a skill position like linebacker and feel athletic and fast then there's no harm in trying. I will say though that the centers and offensive/defensive line were massive at Ohio State. You still have quite a few options though. 1. Become an amazing long snapper. 2. lose a little weight, gain speed, change positions. 3. IF you're not recruited, walk on somewhere or try to play at a lower level school (I'd say walk on somewhere good though). 4. Maybe try nose guard or a different position on the D-line. Lastly, 5. Gain some weight and become extremely talented and skilled at your position (pick one you are best at) and just be a slightly undersized, but extremely good player and try to make it somewhere with that position. I can't make the choice for you, but just believe in yourself 100000% and be confident and you can make one of them happen if it's what you really want. Goodluck bro!

      Hockey&Co Studios sounds like ya got a good shot to me! I would skip the BS and go straight to the school you want to walk on to though...transfer, enroll, get the GPA, and go to next available tryout, your eligibility clock is already running and the process is the same to walk on there vs somewhere worse. Plus they’re not gonna care that you played NAIA or whatever it is, they’re gonna care how good you do at their tryout. As for tips for punters, I have no technical tips to give you, other than being quick and hitting hard has nothing to do with punting, so if that’s your main aim focus on just doing that extremely well. Also you should definitely consider losing weight, not a huge deal if you’re an amazing punter still, but just think what a lot of the other great punters look like! Like I said though, speed up the process and go to next available tryouts at the schools you actually want to play for. Keep us posted and good luck🙏🏼

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +1

      BoiIf YouDon't hey man thanks for reaching out! The fact you’re thinking about these things now is a good sign. The workout side of things is an easy fix, workout CONSISTENTLY, have good form, and do your squats, deadlift, bench, etc. but realize that working out isn’t when you build muscle and grow. You need to eat a TON more than you currently are, start eating more and more each day until you noticeably see you’re gaining some steady weight. It’ll be uncomfortable at first. DM me on insta and we can talk more in depth workout stuff.
      As for the confidence, great question & trust me you’re not alone out there! Tons of people struggle with that and I’ll prob do a video sometime. But for now do this:
      1. Realize that you’re gonna die someday and so is everyone else and that whatever you’re nervous about doesn’t even matter in the grand scheme.
      2. You only get nervous when thinking in advance about the event, so try and just be in the present moment and take a deep breath.
      3. In athletics especially you can’t think about how to run and take steps you, just do it. So whatever they demonstrate, watch it, go through it in your head once, then when you get up to do the drill or play or exercise: STOP thinking, and go all out. Trust that your body will figure it out and let your subconscious take over. If you’ve drilled it a ton it will work.
      4. Tell yourself that the butterflies and nerves are “excitement” rather than “nervousness” this will help shift your mindset and how you feel about the activity - cus those two feelings are actually the same physiologically.
      5. Before you do whatever it is you’re excited about, quickly see yourself succeeding, tell yourself you’re confident and ready, then QUIT thinking. Get out of your head and go try.
      Once you realize that failing is okay and getting yelled at won’t kill you and that you can handle embarrassment even if needed then you can do anything. And when you don’t have fear in your head and body you’ll perform much better.
      Again, realize NO one on this planet “knows” what they’re doing really and just don’t put so much pressure on yourself. You got it, go succeed!

      johnny sabra No I doubt it! Unless that school specifically needs offensive lineman. But being massive definitely gives you a pretty good advantage. They’re gonna wanna see if you can run though. But yeah just because you’re going for offensive lineman won’t make it necessarily easier. Goodluck though, practice up on your 40s, shuttle, 225 bench test etc. and go crush the tryout and it sounds like you have a great shot💪🏼

    hey clay I was wondering if you could tell me on average about what my times should be on the 40 yard dash and the 3 cone drill as a strong safety. I was also wondering if you had an workouts to do to increase my speed. Anything you can tell me at all would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      It really depends on the level of football and what school/division it is. From my experience, an impressive 40 time when trying to walk on was a high 4.5 or low 4.6 at minimum. Most of our safeties when I played ran between 4.4 and 4.6. Maybe could swing a lower 4.7 if you're talented in other areas. That was for all safeties and we didn't really play a strong safety in the run game as much so it was mainly 2 cover safeties that need speed. So I can't speak for other universities really. 3-cone drill I would say low 7s so maybe 7.3 is normal or something, or 7.15. Some really quick people can get it under a 7 and that's most impressive for sure. If you want workouts for speed, go run and do the 40 and get your form and start down perfectly. That's the best advice. Workout wise, explosive trap bar deadlifts and hamstring curls seem to help me most. DM me on instagram @clayrat if you want more workouts. Hope it helps! How do you know how to schedule your classes for the fall if tryouts happen during school? Because what if you make the team but your classes aren’t set up to meet the schedule of the team?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +1

      You go to your counselor and change them if you make it. Simple as that. Tryouts are usually in the first week so you can still rearrange. I was always acting as if I was going to make the team anyway & so I asked other players what the class/practice schedule was and tried to schedule as best I could to fit around it so I didn’t have to worry about it as much later on. But that’s extreme, you can always change them around and figure it out afterwards, we all did.

    I’m in a long shot situation I’m 22 haven’t gone to college yet played only 2years of high school football(because of grades) so I have to go to a CC, but in CT there are no CC with football, I want to play at the D1 level I’m a 5’11” 195 Receiver my only weakness is my speed but I’m working on it, I plan on playing in a Pay to Play Semi Pro League to get back into the swing of things while getting my grades up, so I’ll be about 24 when I transfer to a University is this too old for a D1 or D1AA, I want to play professionally(NFL,CFL or AFL).. what can I do?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +1

      KELLZTV that sounds like a lot going on, I would first focus on grades. If football is your only goal in life then continue to pursue it but make sure you have the right reasons behind wanting to play and really know why. 24 is not too old, but the second you enroll in a college your 4 year eligibility clock starts (whether you’re playing or not). So your best bet is to get good grades, enroll in a university that has football, and walk on to the team through an open tryout. Don’t worry about NFL and all that until after you succeed at the college level. Good luck and let me know if there’s anything else I can help with!

      clay raterman what can I do to improve running speed?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      KELLZTV pretty much work strictly on your sprinting speed and agility. They will test your 40 yard dash and shuttle times. Best advice is to practice running the 40 a LOT. Look up form and technique, sprint it often, and for lifting wise do explosive movements and train your hamstrings. RDLs, leg curls, trap bar deadlifts and do them all with an explosiveness to them. Trying to train your fast twitch muscle fibers. But MAINLY it’s going to come from simply doing a lot of sprints and figuring out the best technique for your body. Practice it and time it. Set a specific time goal and envision it and keep training till you get it!

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  4 года назад

      Since you are on the smaller side and playing receiver it's very important that you're fast and quick. Depends what level of school you want to play at but all I can speak for is a top tier D1 school. And I personally ran 4.5 in the 40 and a 4.00/4.05 in the shuttle. So I'd say you definitely want in the 4.5-4.6 range for the 40 and under a 4.15-4.2 for the shuttle. To get quicker, go practice the shuttle run. Always practice what they will test you on.

    • @clayraterman

      I'm not really sure about Juco, never had any experience with it. I would look it up to make sure. But for traditional colleges you have to be enrolled at that University to try out and make the team. The tryout is basically at the beginning of the semester so yeah you would already need to be enrolled for sure. In reality as a walk-on, you should go to school 100% to go to school and get a degree, not just to play football anyway. So pick somewhere you would like to actually go to school and walk-on there. If you don't make it, try again until you do. Or potentially transfer and try elsewhere if your school credits carry over. Goodluck!

      Nope don't "have" to run a 4.5 for anything - that doesn't guarantee anything or mean anything unless the coaches are impressed by you. Dwarf Of Erebor what’s up man! I’m definitely not gonna tell anyone they “can’t” do something. Go try!!! Always go try, what’s the harm in that. You’ll always regret not knowing but you’ll never regret trying. And if you fail who cares, train and try again until you’re out of time if it’s what you really want. But to answer that in a size question, go for a different position potentially if they say you’re not big enough. D1 lineman are usually quite a bit taller and heavier, but doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Maybe D-line or linebacker may be a better fit if you got some speed and quickness. Did you make the team the very first time you tried out? And lastly how hard was the actual tryout and were there a lot of kids who tried out? How many kids did they take? • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  6 лет назад +2

      Not exactly! So the process went like this: you show up and write down general things about you, height, weight, position, etc. on a sheet of paper. Then they collected our papers and recorded our times for each of the drills (40yd dash, shuttle, etc.) as we did them. There were some stations that were unrecorded doing normal drill work. Then from there at the very end of the tryout, the main coordinator kept a few slips of paper and gave the rest back to everyone else. He said stay after If I kept your paper. Then from there they have those selected few do extra drills. If they like you after that, they will send you home and either say no on the spot, or say "We'll be in touch" or something similar. They then do a background check on you and have you come in for a physical and that is when you have made it is after they do a physical and make sure you have NCAA eligibility and a clean record. They never specifically stated we made it until after that when we got lockers and such.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  6 лет назад +1

      And yes I made it my first year on the team to camp. Going to training camp means you made the 105 man roster. Like I said they usually have about 115-125ish people on the team and 85 are scholarship (guaranteed to make it) (some are preferred walk-ons who will most likely make it, not always) and then the rest. So inevitably there will be some that don't make it. Usually extra specialists or kids who don't add a lot of value on scout teams won't make it. The travel squad is MUCH more difficult to make, they take only 60 or 65 I think which means even a significant amount of guys on scholarship will not make that. Everyone on the 105 roster goes to bowl games though and certain stuff though. I tried out once and they had no roster spots open at the time (always a possibility) and then technically made it my second time around, so keep at it if it's not right away. The tryout wasn't hard necessarily it was literally all the drills I spoke about, you just have to be prepared. They only take a couple kids, sometimes more if they need it and think people are good and sometimes none if they don't so I can't answer that It isn't a set number.

    So I've never played football before but I have wrestled and done track a lot of coaches and friends said I should have done football, well I'm going to college as a freshmen in August and want to try out for corner any advice other than what was in the video? Going to ball state a less competitive football program but still d1

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  6 лет назад +1

      Awesome man! I played some corner too, biggest thing is footwork and speed. They're going to want to see if you can cover man to man at the college level. So get out and do lots of footwork and practice covering people man to man as much as you can. In terms of the actual tryout though they wanna see natural talent and if they can coach you to be a good corner or receiver or wherever they need people at. So they are going to want a fast 40 yard dash and shuttle so work extremely hard on those two specifically. Message me if you need anything else

      clay raterman Should I focus on getting big or technique BC right now I'm only 170 and 6'0

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  6 лет назад

      Being big would be a bonus and something they definitely look at but for a corner you shouldn't need to be looking massive or anything. I would focus a ton on speed. If you impress them with speed and agility they will likely find a way to get you on and get you bigger themselves. If you run a fast 40 yard dash and shuttle thats the way to impress them. Technique and even size and all that are coachable and will come later when you're on the team already, they want raw talent they can mold so speed is the thing to focus on most.

      @clayraterman  5 лет назад +1

      DESTINY CHARLES First thing you gotta understand is it’s your responsibility to make that team if it’s your goal! I can only help out and point you in the right direction. But with that said, google the athletic staff members at your school. Call the athletic center and ask for the walk on coordinators email, or ask for the coach in charge of player personnel. Like legit just google it and start asking around. It’s not as hard as you’re thinking, you gotta solve these problems, you can do it!

    I found out my school was over in walk-on numbers but they are still gonna have Fall tryouts... I’m thinking about waiting to the winter tryouts.
    So I can train more. How can I Keep myself in good standing with NCAA?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      If you have the chance to tryout and you say that’s what your goal is and what you want to do then why would you not go to the fall tryout. There’s always an off chance you make it, worst case you’ll get exposure and experience at a tryout. No downside to trying and only excuses for not trying. I’d 100% go to it if they have it. Also not sure what you mean good standing with the NCAA? If you don’t play college football already or sports you’re not even in the NCAA and they’re not keeping any tabs on you. You just need to be eligible. For the team though you will want to have above a 3.0 gpa. Hope that helps man - go take a shot at the tryout if it’s offered.

    • @deewade8709
      @deewade8709 5 лет назад +1

      clay raterman Thanks man... Cool to hear back from you...I had gotten stress fractures in both legs and I just started back running.. but you’re right about the experience and exposure. I have already heard they not taking anymore walk ons . I think they have to have tryouts tho...The NCAA thing is they said we have to be registered and cleared.. I didn’t know about that I’m just starting as a Freshman this year. I played all 4 years of high school.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 лет назад

      Dee Wade oh ya - NCAA thing don’t worry about for now, there might be some small fee you can pay online to register but you don’t need to worry about that unless they have interest in you and you make it usually. As long as you’re enrolled full time at the university and have a good GPA and are within your eligibility years you should be good. And yeah my first ever tryout they weren’t taking people cus they were full but supposedly they were required to have a tryout, still go - worth it and you never know. Goodluck man!
