Michael Bay uses his budget very well then. His movie looks more expensive than the budget. Endless explosive and CGI but the budget is not really high.

that should apply to government too. look at defense spending alone, it could easily be cut by 75% if the other 25% is used efficiently. then we could afford single payor healthcare
but greed and inefficiency is how the few get wealthy

I think one of the reasons why the visuals look so amazing as they are depsite having an $80 million budget is because Gareth Edwards studied visual effects for his degree at the university I went to (he came in for a guest Q&A at my film course), which makes sense 'cause if you look at his films - Monsters (2010), Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One (2016) - he understands how those scenes are supposed to be shot, he understands scale, he understands how lighting works, and so on an so forth, which also makes it easier for the artists at ILM to do their jobs effectively as a result of him thinking of the VFX in mind throughout production.

Although he doesn't have small budgets(quite the opposite actually) it's the samw case with Cameron.
He was a Visual Effects artist before becoming a director. And so his direction always includes space for visual effects artists to work properly.
Directors who have a knowledge of how visual effects work usually tend to have great looking movies. (In terms of Visual effects).

    • @seangalvin4582

He is similar to Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron. He is familiar with all the jobs involved with making a movie. He is a jack of all trades. That knowledge makes you work smarter and more deliberate.

He’s one of the most visually amazing directors out there, and I don’t like cgi all that much. What he did with rogue one, i mean he made the fight outside of the space Hawaii planet look absolutely beautiful. The gold hue on yavin was a nice touch as well. Would love to see his cut of the film though.

    • @thegreyinitiate3680
      @thegreyinitiate3680 11 месяцев назад +5

He also apparently didn’t start the vfx work until he had finalized a cut he was happy with, so the only VFX shots they had to do were the ones that were already preselected to be in the film itself.

Just got back in from seeing it. Probably one of the most stunning movies and you really can't appreciate the visual story telling from a small screen. The little girl who plays Alphie steals the movie. This is the first thing she's ever done. Holy crap! Those reviews who are making comparisons and not liking it I honestly don't know what to say. If you go in with zero expectations except for good story telling you will not be disappointed. A must see on the largest screen. It's a stunning movie and very good science fiction. I want to see it again.

the movie was all that, but it had some issues in terms of the story. Thers the lack of remote control, the donate your likeness thing and just a bunch of things that just dont make sense like how the guy just found a hazard suite and how the home was iradiated? How the base wasnt defended, how the robots didnt have remote control over things? Just little things that distract from the story, like why make a scifi granade if its hackable but not make it easily deactivated?

Visually and tonally the film is brilliant. Where it struggles for me is narratively. That might come down to me struggling with how I’m supposed to feel about AI whether or not they can ever be considered alive. Which I think is what the major theme of the movie is trying to cover.

Maybe having seen a lot of sci fi and anime dealing with AI, I am some what looking for something deeper. I think it was a good entertaining movie that looks great but I feel that's it. Some good emotional moments with the characters. While watching it, I was looking at all the scenerty and set design and got the feeling that Artstation made a movie. Then I got the feeling of The Golden Child with the kinda bond they form... It's good but, I'm just not as gung ho with it as Dan is.

I re-post here my personal review I've posted in another video, yesterday after watching the movie:
Just came from watching the release as the the initial trailers were promising, the visual effects, the landscapes/locations, the acting, the fictional world scenario, everything is amazing, superb (worth to mention that some scenes reminded me somehow some ones of the anime movie Akira), BUT the entire plot is nonsense, some of the military action is nonsense, there are situations that simply make no sense, also the design of the simulants, is really weird.

I went and saw this today with my parents, and whole-heartedly say GO SEE IT! When it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray, BUY IT! It absolutely deserves a prime spot in anyone's film collection!
I won't be able to go to the cinema again to watch it, but I will definitely be getting the blu-ray the moment I can do so. After the movie while we had lunch, my parents and I spent so much time talking about the film. There's amazing depth to the themes and dilemas throughout the film, so many flips on perspective, as the journey traverses the moral and ethical questions of what it means to be truly considered "alive".
Oh and PS, if you're like me where emotional moments can't help but make you tear-up, bring tissues.

I saw it on Monday at the press premiere in Bangkok and I loved it. And everyone who was there loved it. It is an amazing movie and I love how it very cleverly took unexpected turns. You mentioned how Lucas repackaged The Hero's Journey, in this film Edwards has recpackaged The Journey And Return motif. Also, a mention to the supporting cast, the minor characters who popped up throughout the film, some of whom I know very well, they all seemed real and invested in the story, and that made the world seem real, along with the stunning locations the crew chose to shoot in. This is epic filmmaking done right.

I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's a bit underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation. I was so disappointed in this movie. It looked stunning, but it had so many plot holes (e.g. heaven) and too many serendipitous moments. And although I liked the actors and connect usually very easy emotionally, I was left cold by it. Probably because I got continuously more and more annoyed by the meaningless actions the protagonists took.
    Spoilerwarning:
Why did the child need to be on the nomad at all? Shutting it down for a few seconds made no difference to the story. Why does the US military use robots, like the sprinting bomb thingy, if they banned ai? How could the Nomad suddenly strike far distance targets, when it semmed to only strike in the visible distance the whole time before? Those and many more questions drove me insane, while watching.

Very much anticipating this one. Unfortunately so many original concept films fail to meet unreasonable expectations because we've artificially distilled every movie down to an event film. Now the market is either small budget movies that only have to do ok in the opening weekend or enormous event pieces where you have to capture the full spectrum of movie goers at once to be considered to not lose money. Imagine if Alien had released in this time, I wonder if it wouldn't have just been pushed onto streaming and only talked about as a cult movie that would have disappeared into obscurity on streaming somewhere. I'm really hoping the Creator does get some attention. I hope it's good, but I hope the risk is rewarded even if it's only just ok.

I saw the film last night and really want to watch it again. It’ll probably become a filmmakers film and will, I think, be inspirational to many coming up in the film industry. It was filmed on a Sony FX 3 which is virtually disposable from a Hollywood production point of view. Gareth Edwards has clearly prioritised on what will be remembered about this movie. He did the same with Monsters his first big feature which was edited, colour graded and FX inserts all with Adobes Production Premium Suite. That cost around £1000 at the time. I hope he gets where he wants to be.

I saw it today here in the UK. It seems to have a bit of a limited release, only a couple of evening performances each day, not sure why but it's a shame. I like Godzilla and Rogue One, love sci-fi, so was looking forward to this. It took me a while to get into it, something felt off, I wasn't warming to the main character or Washington's performance. Set up was a bit rushed in the opening credits. Intrusive songs a couple of times. Why the child went along at the beginning, and why people were helping them weren't clear. AIs seemed a bit inept and easily overcome/outwitted. US being able to bomb parts of Asia with no military retaliation also was also unclear. All that said I got into the film in the second half, mainly due to the child character and actress performance. Overall I liked it, reminded me more of Elysium than Star Wars, although the tone of the ending was very Rogue One.

I was lucky to see a test screening of this film several months ago. Had no idea what I was in for but I really enjoyed it. The world was gorgeous to look at with a blade runner mixed with star wars aesthetic. And I loved how they portrayed the AI. CGI was on point. I had assumed this was a huge money sink and cannot believe it was done on such a tight budget. The story is slightly derivative but they put enough of a spin on it that I still enjoyed it. Definitely need to go see it again in its finished state. Hope it'll do well in theaters.

I'm so happy to hear the positive review of the "The Creator". I love sci-fi and I was hoping that an original, good sci-fi movie would come out to show that it's worth the investment to produce unique and exciting science fiction movies.

This is awesome to hear that you loved it - I hadn’t even heard of this film until I saw a few critics like you reviewed it, and the Cinematography you have shown immediately interests me. And then your fervent endorsement of the execution of the story puts me over the top
I can’t go to the film in theaters, I just can’t (quarantining because I care for ill family members and infant child) but I will definitely watch this on PPV as soon as it is available so I can do my part to support original SciFi

I love the world building in the movie & acting by the characters. Gareth Edward is a master in world building and showing a sense of scale. The grungy, weathered world is akin to a Neil Blomkamp movie. I just wish the robots & simulant are more powerful & accurate than just a normal human, they are machines btw.

I was meh on the film. Visually stunning, but the plot was all over the place and took forever to get in and soon as it was getting good, it ends quickly. But i am and will always be happy to support amazing filmakers and their craft.

I have not disliked a movie as much as I disliked the creator in a very long time. The visuals were great though.
It’s a well made movie overall but that script and editing are really really rough. Just couldn’t get over unnecessary pitfalls it created for itself. Just left really angry at it, especially cuz of its potential

Great, saw it yesterday, yeah it borrows a few tropes you have seen before and is kind of a retellling of The Golden Child (1986) but it has a good story I think, Great VFX, good acting, profound ending, 8/10 IGNORE THE HATERS on RT and IMDB...idiots!

well, a big part of a budget goes to the salary of the movie stars, which Creator doesn't have, and marketing, which Creator has been lacking. We'll see how it does without these two big factors.

But I did find that the pacing/story didn't work fully for me. Could have been EPIC, but not quite there. 🍿
Still a great movie and worth a watch on the big screen🎬

Thanks so much for the review, Dan. We make a point to buy tickets to movies that we might not even personally enjoy, but want to support on principle (original stories, mid-budget movies, stories from interesting backgrounds). I want original ideas, but we need to not just see movies becsuse theyre "original". If the ideas are stereotypical, stale, and overdone, it doesnt matter how "new" it is. To me, the creator is just another shallow hollywood idea, on par with franchise emptiness.

80% of it was pretty close to sci-fi brilliance with stunning imagery, an immersive world, and terrific acting. The last 20% (after discovering the truth about Nirmana) was basically a typical action movie just desperately trying to wrap the film up with great leaps of logic, rushed storytelling, and a fumbled opportunity to thoughtfully complete the Jonah/Maya character arc. Overall worth watching but not without its shortcomings. Unfortunately not quite a truly top-shelf classic.
