The Creator Interview: Director Gareth Edwards

  • If there’s one thing director Gareth Edwards’ experience with independent filmmaking taught him, it’s how to utilize your available resources efficiently. From his 2010 indie hit, Monsters, to gargantuan blockbusters like Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Edwards put that knowledge to the test on The Creator, starring John David Washington, with a radical new way to turn the craft on its head after realizing that “in over a century, we've not changed a thing.”
Edwards co-wrote The Creator with screenwriter Chris Weitz (Rogue One), which is a cautionary tale of sorts about the ever-looming presence of artificial intelligence. In this future, humans and AI are warring over control, but that war may soon be coming to an end when the designer of this advanced AI, known only as the Creator, develops a weapon powerful enough to put an end to the war. While grieving the disappearance of his wife, played by Gemma Chan, ex-special forces agent Joshua is assigned to take down this Creator’s plan, but discovers this all-powerful AI weapon is in the form of a child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles). The Creator also features Allison Janney, Ken Watanabe, Amar Chadha-Patel, and Ralph Ineson.
In an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Edwards gives us a peek behind the curtain to find out how he managed to direct an expansive sci-fi adventure like The Creator on less than the typical Hollywood dime. To create a futuristic, dystopian world, Edwards and a condensed crew traveled to breathtaking locations like “Tokyo, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia” and more to capture scenes with real out-of-this-world imagery. The trick was taking mountainous backdrops and gleaming ocean shots and including the AI-riddled world of The Creator in the edit rather than putting his cast against a green screen. Edwards discusses working with Dune’s talented editor, when he first considered filming this way, and why the assembly cut was nearly five hours long. He also shares fond memories of Collider’s Directors on Directing panel at this year’s Comic-Con.

Saw The Creator last night I really hope they release a 3-hour director's cut would probably fix all the flaws of this great movie

They added all the fx after the film was complete and edited so it might look kinda weird. Unless the go back and add the fx, which would be awesome.

This movie (THE CREATOR) was everything I'd hope it would be when I watched the first trailer months ago. Needless to say I loved this movie. It is one of my top five favorite movies of the year. The acting, the story, the messages and the special effects are all top tier. Please go see this in theaters. ASAP. My rating 9.8/10. My only complaint is that it could have been a little longer for story development, but that is just a nickpick the movie is excellent in my opinion. 😆👍

Left the theater and immediately thought there’s definitely a longer version of this movie. Some parts felt rushed and jumpy in the edit. I hope they include an extended cut on Blu Ray. Either way, good movie.

There was 100% a longer movie. Remember in one of the interviews they had a hard time getting it down to two hours. It should've been a 2.5, 2.75 hour movie.

I saw it twice and it was even better the second time when I could sit back & take notice of the immense attention to detail in the VFX and overall production design . Incredible film with such depth and emotion and so much respect for Gareth Edwards, really pushing the film industry into the future 🎞️

great film! watched it twice this (opening) weekend.
Great and personable story. The set and costume design is so cool. The sound design was amazinggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg. Try to watch at an audio enhanced film such as Imax w/laser or dolby or even prime would be wild to watch this movie in. I am forever impressed how impressive this film looks with only 100M budget.
    Spoilers:
I love knowings there's so much more that exists. Would be great to see more of the LA explosion & more Nirmata lore, as well as more badass battles sequences.

--I thought going into the movie it would be about Al too. But it absolutely is not.
But because I went in with that preconception, I was taken in as initially seeing the stimulants as subhuman. Slowly as I saw them as very human, I realized I had been given a taste of how those people who are able to see others as sub human actually feel. This is part of the reason why this movie is my all time favorite. It is about how achieving peace is about recognizing how we have the capacity to view others as subhuman. We need to guard against this evil impulse. The problem is you have to ALREADY have enough compassion/empathy 'hardware' already functioning in your skull to care about the message of this movie. After reading snippets of about 7 different reviews, I have not seen one reviewer who seems to care about the real message of this movie. Thus with this seemingly lack of empathy reflected in those reviews (as well as additional evidence like the G* aza tragedy), we see why we have the chaotic cold world we live in.

The basic idea of the film is good, but the imlementation is pointless and illogical, with many loose ends. We are given no explanation for almost nothing. It's quite an achievement to take such a good idea and make it almost shitty
