This song has a double meaning. He’s referring to a romantic relationship, as well as a relationship with his fans, since it’s been so long since he’s released new music. He has discussed this in recent interviews. Great song from Billy as always. Check out more of his stuff. He doesn’t write bad songs at all. Music legend!!

I saw that Howard Stern video too. I wonder if the love side is referring to Christy Brinkley

What you read out at the beginning were the lyrics to the last song on the last studio album he released in 1993. Famous Last Words.

"Outsiders inside the home that we built"
The 'Famous Last Words' was the last song on the last album Billy Joel recorded in 1993. He had been swindled by a financial manager losing millions. He was about to divorce his wife Christie Brinkley. The business of the music industry made songwriting no fun for him anymore. He was done.
He's toured and sold out stadiums ever since, but his fans always wanted new music from him. The house was the relationship between him and his fans who came out to see him and appreciate his music and performances. The Outsiders were the ones who made music writing difficult and wanted a cut of the $$$.
If you understand this lyric, the rest should fall into place. Yes, it's a double meaning (could also be a romantic lover), but the video is really showing that the relationship he might have taken was the one with his fans, who he wonders will still be able to entertain with new music.
That's what makes the music and the video brilliant.

He was on the Howard stern show. This is about a relationship and also his music and fans. He also talked about regrets. And that he has many when it comes to not writing any more music for so long.

The lyrics are also a metaphor about his career and mostly his writing of new material.

Dude, if you’re not a fan of Billy Joel, you will never get this. It’s about leaving the songwriting behind.” Famous last words” Was the last song he wrote in 1993 and basically he’s saying did I wait too long to come back? It’s a brilliant song if you’re a hard-core fan, you have goosebumps and tears rolling down your face cause you’re going through basically your life with him.

Lawrence hopefully this leads to a new record. Be Well my friend

@@kennyjones6369 I would've been 10 years old when I asked my brother to buy me the new Billy Joel Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2 and that started my obsession with Billy. The soundtrack to my teenage years featured a lot of Billy's work and his music was a special bond between my mother and I (who sadly passed away November last year). She would've LOVED the track and that adds another layer to this song for me as it feels like she is back with me when I hear this song. It's a special one for us Billy Joel fans.

This song is about Billy Joel who haven't wrote a song in 30 years and his relationship with music and now he's back in music because he has wrote this song which peaked on the Billboard Adult chart at No. 11.....and on the airwaves every where. I am so glad he's BACK.

I think it’s more reflecting on his career. What inspiration was missing that he wasn’t creating new art that touched millions. This song is 100% bj.

When he was a younger man this song had not been written. It was written less than 2 years ago. So how did they do this video. This is a really creative use of AI, and I like it. The relationship described is Billy Joel's relationship with music. He divorce music in 2007. So this song has a double meaning; a love affair with a woman perhaps, but also with music for sure.

  • @bidwell13
    @bidwell13 7 месяцев назад

They de-aged him for the video with AI developed by Deep Voodoo. He co-wrote this with Freddie Wexler who produced the song and a couple other guys. Billy Joel asked them when they finished writing who they were going to get to write it and Freddie looked at him and said you’re singing it. This is his first new song in 17yrs and his first music video in 30yrs. After 1993 songwriting was painful to him. Wexler’s wife got the two together and Joel sent him a cd with unreleased songs he had and after a bit Wexler sent him this song and Joel said he could’ve written this song anytime cause the words were verbatim what he was feeling. Wexler said "Billy has said in his own words, 'I think it was fate' that we met and that I presented this song a couple of years into our writing process. It really does feel like an idea he would have started himself."

He suffered song writing burn out in 93 I'm guessing he got sick of writing song's on his own, he found his bernie taupin in Freddy Wexler who is songwriter who is a fan of Billy who revived Billy excitement for songwriting

Don't take the lyrics so literally. They mean more than one thing. He's talking about romantic relationships, sure, but also his kids. And also the relationship with his fans. Keep in mind that being "romantic" isn't just lovemaking, it can also mean having a bright hopeful view of the world.
All of those relationships have suffered from him becoming jaded and not participating as he got older. "Turn the Lights Back On" is a promise to reengage. We even see the lights turn back on at the end of the video.

You read the words which didn't matter that much but You missed the tear-soaked paper which did matter. Right at the beginning he turns his tear soaked lyric book to a blank new page and starts playing from the heart. That's a possible metaphor. Jus sayin

Omg!!…. Do some research instead of embarrassing yourself….. this is his first song in many many years…. It’s a perfect song for returning to writing…. Which is what he’s writing about….. if you notice, towards the beginning, he take a paper off the top of the piano….. the title says “Famous last Words “…. Which was the last song On his last album before he retired from writing popular songs

Here's; an interesting idea. Instead of giving us a line by line analysis of the song while it's playing like a sports announcer doing play by play , why don't you let the cumulative emotion and build up and resolution of the song sink in and react to it as a "whole" piece of art? Songs aren't written to be digested in tiny bites, the writer is trying to create flow and rhythm to create a vibe or tone and a context for the lyrics. Constantly stopping the song destroys what a song is supposed to be. It's disrespectful to the artist. Yes I know you have to pause it a time or two because of you tube, but the constant stopping just makes me move on to another channel. This is my opinion and others are entitled to theirs. Terell, I wish you good luck and success with your channel.

"Asserting your presence" is fine in certain circumstances, but if it's not productive then it's a waste of time. This song was about forgiveness and redemption from one person to another.
