He writes about common things we all experience and stuff we can all relate to. This song's title also for us was him finally writing a song again after decades. We've missed him. It was his goodbye to rock although he never stopped touring.He's literally turning the lights back on for fans of 40 yrs. Toured with Elton John 2 times. Still fills stadiums. Saw him at Notre Dame in 22 where he did most of his harder rock songs. Still rocks an almost 3 hr show.
Funny I used to feed my younger son and cry when Famous Last Words came on cause it was his good bye ,30 yrs later that same son, at 30, went to Notre Dame with me to see Billy. 😅❤😅
Billy has said it has a double meaning, so great pick up. His music is very eclectic, all genres of music. Most of his songs have real meaning and are personal to him. He wasn’t one to sit down and try to write a hit. He wrote about what he was feeling. An amazing artist with a great career. Please check out more Billy Joel. You will not be disappointed.

YES BILLY, I AM!
Not trying to be a dick here but Billy never really stopped writing, he just decided he was not going to record anything new in the pop/rock genre after his last album in 1993 in those genres. When he writes a song, it is music first and then lyrics but occasionally he has written lyrics to a song and then scrapped them and just recorded the instrumental because he felt the music by itself was worthy enough, a song called Nocturne being an example of that, and other times he just felt the songs had a theme that did not need lyrics, Root Bear Rag and The Mexican Connection being examples there. And to show that he never stopped writing music, he put out a classical album in 2001 called Fantasies & Delusions:Music for Solo Piano, examples being Invention In C minor and Air ("Dublinesque").
Great singer/songwriter/pianist, I have a number of his works in my personal collection. I've never seen this video before and it's great, thank you for exploring this.
He had a couple throwaway singles around 2007; otherwise, this is his first tune since his River of Dreams album in 1993. The last song on that album was Famous Last Words. Hope you do more of his music.

I love how they used AI in this to go through the decades of his performances. Some of it is him and some is a double that’s wearing the kind of clothes he would’ve worn. The cowriter of this song got his wife to set up the meeting between the two through Joel’s former doctor. They sat and talked then Wexler (cowriter) asked if he had any unfinished works so Joel sent him some stuff and two years later he presented Billy Joel with this song. It had been 17years since he released an original song. It was 30years since he “retired” from music. 9:06 artificial intelligence has allowed this to happen.

Beethoven is Billy's favourite classical composer though, so he was probably happy to make an exception and do so. And in 1986 Billy put out an album called The Bridge and one of the songs on it is called Code of Silence and Billy usually writes music first and then lyrics, but he was having writer's block while trying to finish the song in the studio. Cyndi Lauper had been recording in another studio within the same building and went to say hello and she asked him what was wrong, so Billy said he was struggled with lyrics to finish the song, so she took out a writing pad and asked him to play the song for her, music and what lyrics he had so far. Cyndi then jotted down a few lyrics of her own and then between the two of them they played around with it until they eventually had the song in its finished state and it has both of them listed as co-writers.
This song is deeply spiritual, and the video is absolutely fantastic!! Yeah he's not been making any new music since the 90's cause he claimed he was out of juice, but here we are with a new song! I hope he makes a new album!

To me it’s about a failed relationship he would like to rekindle. I know he use to be married to Christy Brinkley and I’ve noticed she has attended a few of his latest performances so I don’t know if he still longs for her to be back in his life.
Billy is 75 years old now. This song (released this year) was his first single since 2007! I absolutely adore his music, you really should check out his catalog. Some of my favorites are Vienna, Honesty, Just the Way You Are, New York State of Mind, The Longest Time, She’s Always A Woman….and on and on and on.

He's recently finished a 3 year sell out run at MSG in New York (Madison Square gardens) Pick any Billy Joel song and you'll either enjoy it enormously or love it forever. He is known as The Piano Man after his song of the same title catapulted him onto the scene. His songs all tell a story. Too many to mention but my favourite performance is New York State of Mind live from a show called the Old Grey Whistle Test. Also, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant & Goodnight Saigon. Any song will be a good choice for you😊
