Get your hand wet. Then you "pet" the fishes fins down. Turn the hook down and then pull the hook out. Last step let it go or keep it for a fish fry.
This is from the full length video "How to take a bluegill off the hook" where I showed several different ways to take a fish off the hook.

Was I the only one holding fish in one hand and watching this reel with the other?
i’m just imagining myself holding a fish, frustratingly looking at youtube on my phone trying to figure out how to release him without hurting him 😂
Yeah you are rookie
😂😂
@garbage.cannot lol been fishing a long time, but my wife hooked into a gar last night and after he got off I said to her, not real sure what we would have done with him once we got him in the net. Handled plenty of catfish and pike but gar is a new one for me.
@@garbage.cannotand then a RUclips ad plays before the video starts frustrating you even more 😂
it’s like those blades of grass you touch one way and it’s smooth but you touch the other way and it feels like a mini saw 😂
Now that's a happy sunfish
i thought it was a bluegill
@@Gdubzzz_ a bluegill is a part of the sunfish family of freshwater fishes just like a largemouth bass is part of the same family as the bluegill crazy stuff
@@SunfishForFish ohhh didn't know that, thanks man
How i taught my kids.
Get control of the hook first. When you do this it prevents the fish from swinging all around and poking you.
With your left hand "pet" the fish like down but i go with my pinky first and slide down the fish until i can get a good grip.
With my right i take the hook out.
Pretty much as shown i just use my petting hand differently.
Next show how to properly handle a catfish.
Thank you I have wanted to learn this but I have always been scared but that has been years ago so I am going fishing soon and I will try this thanks alot
Thanks! I just pulled my first bluegill on my way home from the gym today and I think this'll help out the next catch :)
Ngl i just put it into the water until it gets off
Thanks for being honest
I really wanna go fishing in a lake or on a river bank with someone who knows how to fish it would be so fun and I would be to learn how to filet a fish and how to cook one well
Everyone was a beginner angler at some point. Don’t be afraid to try on your own. Being in nature alone is a mystical experience
That why it hurt when I held my first catch, a perch of some sort
When i hear bluegill-red dead redemption 2
What when its flopping about?
are you at the reparian reserve in Gilbert?
Nope. I’m at a pond in Hartford Wisconsin
That’s funny I’m going there tomorrow
I caught my first bluegill a couple day's ago and it was huge and didn't know how do it
Thanks!
Are all fish fins sharp??
No. Some aren’t pokey. The back fins on most fish are soft
thank you im new to fishing i just went fishing with my dad and i caught a bluegill and i got poked by the fins
OUCH! That hurts. Sorry that happened. I hope this video helps you for the next time out.
I always get scared with those suckers lol, when you first pull them out of the water too when they flop around while I'm trying to get a hold of it, ive been stabbed a couple of times lmao.
Let it go into another bucket Blue gill make the best catfish bait
I went fishing and I dropped the bluegill. It went flopping around in a spine hit me in the toe so you always wanna grip it hard to.
OUCH!
Was that a warmouth?
No. Just a hybrid bluegill (a mix of a green sunfish and a bluegill)
What about if i catch a small fish and it is deep in i dont want to hurt the fish
You can cut the line
It wont do anything?
What about i want the Hook back?
I’ve never caught a fish that holds still like that.
Not sure about dangerous but yes they will poke you for sure and it does hurt.
You gotta stroke the fish
Quick question, I heard that when a fish swallows a hook you shouldn't try to get it out you should just cut the line, I always thought they would die but I heard they will still live even if they swallow it, is that true?
They can live with a swallowed hook. However, If they’re bleeding already before you try to cut the line, that fish probably won’t make it.
@@tiefsa ah ok thanks for your response 👍
Do you have advice for how to do this with a fish that won't stop flapping around? This just happened and I'm newer to fishing so I wasn't sure what to do. He ended up moving around so much that the hook came out on its own.
You can’t do much when they are like that. You just have to wait.
Sometimes I tickle their belly until they relax, if the don't I just use forceps or pliers to turn the hook while I hold them low over the water, the hook pops out and the fish falls in the water
Dip them in the water for a minute and let them fight themselves tired. Once they stop fighting for a few seconds pull em out, get the hook out, and toss em back. Thats what i usually do, with the smaller fish at least.
@@Dont_Reply.to_Methank you man they keep flappin on me and im newer to fishing
Yes. Use a rag to pick the fish up. Best method ever. They won't slip a bit. Have a good one. 👍
😧😧😧🙈🙈🙈
My blue gill got the hook stuck in his hill so I killed him and had him for dinner 👍🏻
That happens sometimes. I'm glad you didn't just throw him back dead and you ate him.
BELLY FLOP
why not just grab the mouth with your thumb
SOME OF THEM IF NOT ALL HAVE TEETH!
@@lxAngelsJourneyxl not sharp enough to hurt you. Most I’ve ever had from catching 3-4 lb bass is some scratches
If you don’t already know about this you shouldn’t be fishing
I disagree. Everyone learns some way or another.
