@@nickdentoom1173 I kind of do blame the games, because the reason why the anime had to create the Ash-Greninja form in the first place is because there were no Gen 6 Pokémon that could Mega-Evolve(besides Diance, but Ash was obviously never going to get that) & the anime writers at the time were still hard-locked into only allowing Ash to catch/have "Current-Gen" Pokémon(plus Pikachu).
There's also the, at the time, still-persisting delusion(among the execs, at least) that the anime would be over if Ash ever actually won a game-based Pokémon League, but that's another issue altogether.
Giving all three Kalos starters their own Mega forms would've easily & immediately solved *A LOT* of very solvable problems, in both the games & the anime; unfortunately, that didn't happen, so we're stuck dealing with the mess we currently have.

I don't know if I'd hold the Entei in the movie being an illusion against it since Entei still by far (and rightly so) got more attention in that movie than the Unown, which were relegated to basically just being a plot device to let the movie happen, while Entei was the one who got to be an actual character. It had the emotional moments where it was doing everything it could to make Molly happy, the epic battle against Charizard, and the heroic sacrifice at the end. Suicune, on the other hand, definitely played second fiddle to Celebi in Pokémon 4Ever. It was honestly just kinda there, helping out whenever it was needed and not getting much attention beyond that. I don't think that really makes up for Suicune getting to be a box art legendary (and being a fighter in Pokkén), but I'd definitely say Entei got the better deal of the movies.

I don't think Garchomp deserves a spot on this list, being the strongest pokemon in the (arguably) hardest battle of the series does earn some deserved points in popularity.
Not quite his fault if the other pseudos couldn't live up to the bar he setted Back in 2006.
Also game freak did the same "mistake" with every single pseudo after him: so being constantly overshadowed by another pokemon introduced the very same generation, think about Goodra and Dragapult, instead of being the aces of the champion team they're in by using the new mechanics that spot woa given to another pre existing pokemon namely Gardevoir and Charizard, and none of them needed a boost in popularity, while brand new pokemon were left out of the table.
This is somewhat more excusable in gen 6 wjere they only gave megas to previous gen mons (besides diancie but that was a later release as mistery gift), the other way around in gen 8 this mistake is abysmal as they made the gmax available for galar Pokémon as well.....
So I think Garchomp is fine being popular, the other pseudos should have been treated better.
If I'm to pick a replacement I'd say Eevee or even Meowth; think about it's gmax: Pikachu and Eevee were the mascots of the very previous games so it would make sense, but Meowth being the only other unevolved mon to get a gmax is absurd..... Now, we know the gmax energy only crops up in galar, and Meowth has a regional variant there, so it'd be logical to have gmax galarian Meowth or gmax Perrserker.... But nop, we got the gmax regular Meowth, which is not even in the galar dex..... So this pokemon is basically overshadowing itself, plus the fact that it's the only one having all the possible regional forms so far (I'm really NOT looking forward to a paldean Meowth being revealed).

The fact that your team building needs to be pretty accurate it only means that the challenge you're preparing for it's hard.

This is probably why a lot of people tend to like all three Gen 3 starters equally and is probably the most balance in terms of favoritism and exposure. None of the starters feels like they have an uneven amount of popularity or focus among each other despite their competitive values. Sceptile, Blaziken, and Swamper are all fairly shined among each other and in their respective typings. Unfortunately, this and maybe Gen 4 is probably the last time it happened because it’s easy to tell who will become the teacher’s pet in every other set of starters after that. The moment Cinderace’s hidden ability (Basically another Greninja with even less merit…) and stats were revealed, I knew he would get all the attention compared to Rillaboom and Inteleon. And guess who’s one of the first Pokémon in Pokémon Unite?
Nowadays, it just seem like Gamefreak decides on which starter they want to pander or which starter is the loser. (Poor Meganium…..)

@@domenicavallone28 It’s kinda difficult to determine for Gen 5 because the case is the exact opposite of Gen 3 where they are probably the least popular trio of starters. I would say Emboar at first as they are trying so hard to make it the third coming of Blaziken and Infernape in terms of the games with it being the only one with a secondary typing and the widest movepool or another Infernape and Charizard with the anime, being another Fire starter Pokémon abandoned by a neglectful trainer but it seems that Gamefreak realized that never fly considering Emboar is probably the least popular since people are sick of the overused trends it brought as well as its design.
For Gen 7, I would say Incineroar because of its Smash Bros debut but it’s relatively close with it and Decidueye. The latter did appear in Unite and Pokken after all. It was even considered for Smash but they went for Incineroar instead. All I know is that Primarina got benched in that generation in terms of focus.

Huh, didn't know Suicune was that overrated. But I do agree that it overshadows the other two in the trio. Especially poor Raikou, I mean at least Entei got a movie and it ain't even the best fire dog in Pokémon despite it being "legendary".

Honestly my main surprise is that Suicune is on this list instead of Mewtwo. I always remembered hearing that when it came to overrated Pokemon, Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo were the "holy trio" as it were. I was going to say at Zard should have been number one, but you did bring up some good points for Greninja that I can agree with, despite the ninja frog being my favorite of the Kalos starters. (Not favorite Pokemon though, that goes to Grovyle and Sceptile). My favorite Kalos starter use to be Chesnaught, but my eyes were opened up once I realized that I loved all three forms of Froakie, while when it came to our knightly friend, I love Chespin and Chesnaught, but I don't really like Quilladin.

Gengar and Greninja were two Pokemon that I enjoyed that were ruined for me by fans. Gengar was one of my favourite gen 1 Pokemon until I started watching The King Nappy back in the day. Even before all the stuff about his private life came out, his obsession and borderline aggression around Gengar made me kind of sick of seeing it and I stopped really wanting to use it until recently. Greninja meanwhile has been ruined for me by the militant XY anime fans who seem to think it is the only Pokemon that matters. Every discussion and rumour about Journeys seems to start with 'Greninja comes back and...', normally ending with it evolving into Jesus and 6-0ing every trainer in the world. Greninja wasn't my favourite Kalos starter (I think I'm in the minority that loves the Chespin line), but it is now one of my least favourites because of its fans.

I'm also rather sick of how much people put gen6 on a pedestal, particularly with Greninja and Serena. The former I feel is a big reason why so many people got SOOOOOOO triggered by seeing Alain lose so badly to Leon, not just because it makes Leon look better by proxy, but also because it robbed Ash the chance to have his rematch against Alain and get the win with Greninja he "deserved" during Kalos, although I don't see too many people admitting this is part of why they hate that battle so much. As for Serena, you ALWAYS hear amourshippers talk about how they want to see Ash and Serena get together again, I even remember that there were some people who seemed disappointed that she didn't appear in the first episode of Journeys, even though it was more about introducing the audience to Goh and giving Ash's Pikachu a backstory before meeting Ash

Compared to its more "masculine" appearance and more destructive/abrupt powers of entei and raikou (volcanic eruption and lightning storms. though soil of dormant volcanoes is quite fertile and lightning strikes can actually recharge soil to support new plant growth), Suicune's more "feminine/androgynous" design mixed with its more prominent healing curative nature is gonna be more stand out as something people want to actually meet.

Suicune is such a weird case of Early Installment Weirdness. Johto introduced two big Legendaries (Lugia and Ho-Oh) rather than three, three "lesser" ones (the legendary beasts), and a Mythical (Celebi), and they didn't want to use the Mythical for the third version, so I guess they rolled the dice for who's going to be the third version mascot.
That's my theory, there must be a good behind-the-scenes reason why Suicune is picked.
11:41 Actually, Greninja's four Special moves form a legal moveset (Water Shuriken/Shadow Sneak/Hydro Pump/Substitute), albeit with artistic license in how they function, e.g., Substitute being a counter-attack. But by Pokémon-in-Smash-standards, it isn't that bizarre.

They probably realized later on that Ho-Oh and Lugia where only a duo and didn’t know what to do for the 3rd version of the game so they just slapped Suicune on the cover and had every future box legendary be a trio (Weather Trio, Creation Trio, etc.) though because of that they felt the obligation to push it more than the other legendary beast.

Greninja was spoonfed it’s popularity and it feels artificial and forced. It was chosen to be in Smash before X and Y even came out, just because they wanted it to be popular. It was given all these trophies without working at all to get them. We’ve had frog Pokemon and even ninjas, yet how come nobody claims Seismetoad or Ninjask as their favourite Pokemon, and poor Chesnaught and Delphox get nothing, almost as if they were surplus to requirement as soon as they pushed on with the frog with the stupid tongue. Like Froakie, Rowlett was an immediate favorite amongst fans, and this only increased when its cool final stage was revealed, much like Greninja. However, unlike Greninja, Decidueye just came up short, as far as I know. In game, Greninja has great moves that it can utilize to great degree because of how it was programmed, but, maybe because Decidueye loses one typing for another but can’t reap the benefits from the moves it learned or learns as well, it falls behind in that regard. Rowlett clearly carries this line, and is one the likely reasons they never bothered to evolve Ash’s, because, after the release of the game, a good amount of excitement for Decidueye must’ve died down.

And as a charizard fan myself, I also feel that he gets a bit too much love sometimes (as much as I approve of his x mega evolution and his gigantimax form). I guess Gengar is sorta the same to charizard, but to a lesser extent. As for Pikachu.....yeah, overrated/oversaturated, especially for a mascot. I actually prefer Raichu over Pikachu, and really loved Surfer Raichu. As for Greninja....not really much to say about him personally, but I probably would have chosen him over the other two, with chespin being second, if I ever get a chance to play X or Y. I usually just choose the starter whose final evolution I am most aesthetically pleased with. RIP Spriggatito, my hopes for a non-humanoid final form were short lived. Guess I'll go Fuecoco.
I think a mon you could have put on this list, and could have probably replaced Garchomp, would have been Zygarde (as much as I like him because of 100% form reminding me of Imperialdramon Fighter Mode). It is another ground/dragon type mon, and it has 3 signature moves. Another mon that could have been on this list more for over favoring than overrating is Rayquaza (I'm generally a dragon type fan, so sue me XD). I don't agree with Garchomp here. Sure, it has lots of love, but I believe it totally deserves it. It is one of those Pokémon where the design perfectly encapsulates the inspirations and blends them together organically. Like, who would have thought that a land shark jet dragon could be pulled off this well?? It is true that it is very powerful, but that's bound to happen if you are a pseudo-legendary. Also, looking at the pseudos before and even after it, I think Garchomp stands out pretty well. And blame Salamence for the dragon type trend, it did it a generation before. Also, I think Flygon has the "so underrated it's now overrated" type of scenario. Nowadays lots of people overrate this Pokémon (I love it as well, but being honest Garchomp is superior in almost every way). Flygon is cool, but I wouldn't blame Garchomp for stealing the spotlight, as Flygon never had the spotlight in the first place until people realised what a great Pokémon it is. Long story short, Garchomp is very well regarded, but it deserves it.

As for the "so underrated it's overrated" thing for Flygon, I think we can blame that on Salamence getting (a poorly designed, personally) mega evolution with Flygon being left with nothing. It was the perfect opportunity to give the "dragonfly dragon pokemon" a dragon/bug type form to play further into its gimmick. Then again, this could just be that "so underrated it's overrated" thinking itself XD

While I don't disagree that Dragonite probably needed the Mega more, I don't really care for Dragonite in the first place. As you saw it was on the thumbnail so I find it overrated; it's like Gengar, it's not "good," just the only Dragon at the time. So yes, Salamence is the same typing as Dragonite, but to me it did literally everything way better...

Honestly I think Lucario should be here instead of Pikachu, with Pikachu it makes sense that it's that popular and it really isn't excessive.
Yeah it's not always organic when he fits in...but even for those times most of the time he fits in as someone who represents Pokémon as a whole.
Pikachu having that many forms make sense as well with it being well...the series mascot, it should logically get special attention.
Although yes FINALLY! Someone else sees just how overrated Greninja is. He is at least comparable to Charizard in that aspect if not even more overrated.

I’m glad someone else agrees with me in the Greninja department. Kalos was the second generation in which I chose a grass type. The first was Johto, by the way.

Eh, I chose grass in Gen 3, 6 and 7!
      Fire in 4 and 8
      Water in 1,2 and 5
To complete this, I’ll pick Fuecoco in Gen 9

I've actually chosen Grass the majority of the time, Kalos included, but I like the overall type of Grass far less than the other two, so I guess they just design cool staters...

I wound up choosing Chesnaught because it was the starter I despise the least.

Justice for Flygon and I agree on Leon using a stupid Charizard as his ace, while the charizard has some good coverage moves that doesn't excuse it from taking a better rep's place instead

huh,i didn't know that greninja was so overused. i guess growing away from the franchise does that. i do admit it is my fave gen 6 starter, but i do have a weakness for the water starters.glad swampert isn't here

I'm also a fan of the water type starters in general, but I feel like Greninja was picked for a few reasons, with the biggest one that it was put on a pedestal more than any other starter in the series before or since, other than Charizard, that is, I'd be remiss to not mention that. But with Swampert, on the other hand, it's generally agreed that it deserves the praise it gets from people, and I can definitely see it as being the second most loved water starter after Greninja; I will, however, admit that u don't really like the design of it's mega evolution and that it somewhat randomly has swift swim as it's new ability
