  • This Sonata was published in 1802 with the title "Grand Sonata", and this wonderful work surely deserves this title. It is dedicated to Prince Karl von Lichnowsky, just like the famous Pathetique Sonata, Op. 13. Ludwig van Beethoven used this sonata as an experimental work, as he uses new material and concepts. This sonata is Beethoven's first that includes pedaling indications. It is also the earliest sonata with Beethoven's autograph (the hand-written manuscript). This movement, under the title "Scherzo," is playful and full of surprises. It is in a Minuett and Trio form. This recording is by G. Smith. Enjoy!
