I loved this piece when I was a music major in college. To this day, it's one of the few pieces I've played that brought a listener to tears. Here, Barenboim gives the phrases room to breathe, which is essential for this piece.
7:02 gives me endless chills. So beautiful. Such a beautiful performance.
It is my favorite melody. A hymn or a love song? God spoke to him.
I do love listening to Barenboim's interpretations. I've spent most of my life attempting to play Beethoven and my biggest downfall has always been trying to play too fast. Barenboim is never afraid to take his time, he's not playing to show off (as I think I used to), but to give the world a chance to hear Beethoven's genius. The older I get the more I appreciate that faster is not always better, it's the feeling that matters most.
The adverts are incredibly intrusive, but do serve to show how amazing Beethoven is compared to modern music.

the scherzo which is the hardest part of the whole thing he plays at breakneck speed and the third variation he plays really fast the parts most slow down and really slow the parts people speed up because they're easier .
The first movement of this Sonata has moments of genuine love.
If I had to pick just one Beethoven sonata as my favorite, this would be it. Never tire of hearing it.

Warm and lovely? Are you serious? This is one of the darkest sonatas. There is a reason it is called funeral march.
Only the third movement and a bit of the first are funereal. Overall, this sonata's spirit is more lively than dark. The fourth movement rondo positively sparkles.
I'm perplexed people can misunderstand the character of a piece so badly. The fourth movement is anything but "sparkles". A good description I heard is "raindrops falling on the coffin" or "people having a quiet conversation after the funeral".
John Reel describes the fourth movement as brisk and bright. Not too far off from my "sparkles" metaphor. The spirited dynamics and tempo don't suggest "people having a quiet conversation after the funeral."
You seem to think of the entire sonata as funereal, but it is not. The first movement has been called an exploration of process and of happiness. William Kinderman, in the liner notes of my Brendel CD of this sonata, describes some of the thematic variations in the first movement as "playful."
It's odd that you believe people "misunderstand the character of a piece so badly" while, presumably, your interpretation is the only correct one. Music is art. Inevitably, it will resonate differently with each individual. That's part of its power.
I love that he starts the first movement with the E flats 0:20 and does the same at the start of the 3rd movement 11:55
It kind of makes you think its gonna be the very joyful theme from the first movement but very quickly you realize it is actually a minor key (reminding me of the 3rd varation in a way)
I 'm amazed by th e sound he gets. I was given this sonata in high school . Never learned how to find the music in it . The style here is another world , A gentler but robust full toned Beethoven . Ive always been bored by this music but here I cant stop listening . I need to hear him in all these ! My fave the last 5 maybe he can make op. 90 shine for me or the early A op.2 no.2 . Amazed by the melting 3rd variation . Full of event and detail !
Barenboim always astonishes me with his unyielding attentiveness to each and every note. The fourth variation, although he takes it quite slowly, may be at its very best here.
I totally agree. His Mozart Piano Concerto's I didn't listen to (being a Uchida fan) until I finally gave in and bought the set, and as you say his attentiveness lifts certain passages, and even accents them. Slight (non-Mozart) pauses bring a certain character that is very much 'Barenboim'. Similar to Gould on Bach.
The march ..... absolutely no soothing circumstances. What a concentrated expression!
Quite astonishing. Var II is taken at such speed, and with crescendi so exaggerated as to be almost discordant. But then as the movement unfolds it all makes perfect - and unexpectedly perfect - musical sense. A tremendous imagination.

The use of Tema con Variazioni in the first movement of a piano sonata was not unprecedented. W. A. Mozart used it in his Piano Sonata K 331 in A, which BTW also totally broke with the classical sonata style ending with the famous Rondo alla Turca.
I wouldn't call ending with a rondo-finale a departure from the tradition of the sonata...

I have an old boxed set of vinyls of the 32 played by Barenboim. On the cover it has his youthful looks with a shiny sleek head of brown hair
Here he has transformed into how Beethoven looks in various busts etc an old decrepit man but with years of experience under his belt
Shame when they die their talent goes as well? I wonder if they will ever invent some way to pass the musical part of their brain onto alive humans so they don't have to waste years of time practicing and never getting there?

I'm not impressed. This piece is mostly theme and variations. It sounds like it was composed by a tiresome student who couldn't write a melody if his life depended on it. The funeral section is repetitious to the point that I almost wished it was Beethoven's funeral - 20 years sooner than his actual one. This is ugly music. Beethoven took the wonderful expressiveness of the piano and reduced it to a series of repeating tape loops. Why bother with the piano if you're only going to use it to say the same thing over and over with only some variations in tempo and ornamentation?
