I would like to think that JV convo is a kairos for many, most importantly for Lex, as I feel this first episode must feel like a kairos in retrospect.
My proposed solution to an AGI utility function in order to ensure its values are aligned with ours so we survive the intelligence explosion - The 3 laws of AGI: 1. Minimise harm/permanent trauma; 2. Subject to 1, maximise consciousness/free will (i.e. the ability for conscious entity to freely choose and take action to accomplish its complex goals including the experience of more complex and/or ecstatic conscious states); and 3. Subject to 1, maximise intelligence (i.e. ability to determine the action required to achieve a complex goal). Of course - definitions will be the tricky one (particularly how to define harm/trauma). There is a risk this will evolve as subjective values evolve. But ideally should be objectively measurable as possible (eg most people can agree being healthy is better than being diseased and is possible to objectively measure the absence of disease). Would be interested if anyone can break these (like Asimov’s laws of robotics which were just a writing prompt not to be taken seriously). We really really need to be working on getting this right before the first AGI gets the ability to improve its general intelligence. Or we are all fucked (unless we can successfully contain it or ensure controlled intelligence explosion, which might be impossible given multiple competing state actors with an incentive to gain the first mover advantage).
Max Tegmark and his book Life 3.0 single-handedly made me go into Computer Science to learn the foundations of Artificial Intelligence. Thank you Mr. Tegmark!

Almost all Lex's tech guests are fixated on knowledge being good but often overlook the subtle manipulation of knowledge present in media throughout history and even in science that biases "truth". Dear friends, we see glaring examples from holy scriptures to social media --- Truth is typically a twisted concept that ultimately leads primates like us to violent conflict. Yann, Mark, Elon should listen to Geoff and consider how screwed up Truth has become. I'm increasingly dubious that AI will be able to help us find a peaceful path forward if the tech community doesn't become much more vigilant.
Listening to this again in April 2023 just shows how clear thinking and rational Max is/was on the subject of AI. Rereading his book again now... Life 3.0. Also great to see Lex stumble through some of his questions and see how far he has come as an interviewer.
It's interesting to hear this conversation after hearing the last conversation with Max. Max's ideas and arguments, even the words he uses to answer the questions are pretty much the same today as they were back then. Also, Lex's style does not seem to have changed much at all. Amazing to see the evolution of your work, Lex. You've come a long way in your podcast from watching this first video and seeing how you interact today ... growth!
Thank you so much Lex and Max for this video. There are so few people nowadays who try to understand and explain the risks of AGI in such a reasonable fashion, and can also help us see the potential and beauty of the universe. I've never considered our place in the universe like the way you talked about, and I think in the way you both explained it, I might start to understand. You guys are a real inspiration!
This talk was sooooo inspiring. Both of you are so inspiring. I work as a software engineer and would love to get into AI research and am currently enrolled in Andrew Ng's course and failed one of the quizes. I surely needed this kind of boost to remember why am I doing the course in the first place. Thank you so much, I have a lot of learning to do!! Thank you for these talks, we really are living in a remarkable world, when a guy from Eastern Europe can listen to people from MIT talk about these almost esoteric topics and be inspired by them so much.
We really appreciate everything you do and we love you for it. Thank you Lex! And Max Tegmark gave such a wonderful perspective to it all. It was so beautiful.
Beautiful conversations out of the gate. Thank you for being an inspiration on so many levels, Lex. I appreciate you as a podcaster, a thinker, an expander, a lover of ideas, a young man striving to become the best you can. Much love.
I totally agree with Dr. Max Tegmark regarding sympathetic goals and ai. I think this could greatly assist lawmakers working on 5000 page bills. His humility regarding intelligence is well received. And both of your concerns about ai empathy being of utmost importance for the future is in concurrence with my own. The example of the autopilot and airplanes was spot on. Some of this could be applied to testing the logic of the constitution against non-egailtarian application of civil liberties and justice. It could also be used very effectively to prevent an accidental creation of legislation that contradicts our initially agreed upon weighted goals. I agree with Dr. Seth Lloyd's view of the cosmos being a computational device fundamentally. And the problem of being able to interface and communicate with it addressed by Dr. Tegmark.
I would not have wasted the opportunity to interview this man. I get that it was most likely overwhelming. Good experience for this kid. I hope he learned a LOT.
Your podcast started as an MIT Course? It's great to see how it's grown. I noticed some of the earlier podcasts don't have books listed in the description, so here's a list for this one: Our Mathematical Universe by Max Tegmark LIfe 3.0 by Max Tegmark
I might be wrong, but I can see Lex is much more excited when he started this podcast or more expressive. Maybe 2020 is tiring for everyone. I hope 2021 will treat us great! One thing that didn’t change: his genuine curiosity about life, love, intelligence, science, and humanity. His unique personality contributed to the success of his podcast. No one can copy that. And if people say that podcast is about the guests, well, not really, it’s about the host also, the interactions could extract a different perspective from both. If I want to get deeper into a topic presented by an expert, I will read his or her publications, books, or essays. I think podcast is about sharing and exploring interesting novel ideas that are not mainstream or popular, which I really appreciate. Sometimes the guests are perplexed by Lex’s unusual questions, but that’s also interesting and entertaining. Some parts of the conversation are repeated in the second interview, it’s interesting to see that they are still thinking about it and hold the same conclusions. Stay awesome, Lex! I love you 3000!
What a beautiful mind. Lex you're a legend. Bringing all of these interdisciplinary great minds together in one place is fantastic. Introducing us to these minds is fantastic, I feel privilaged to live in a world where we can be stimulated by an introduction to these humans, then just go online to dig deeper - or not. Truly inspiring. ps dont be so hard on yourself Lex, your inner warrior will hear. I, for one, love the silly questions NO ONE else asks
I’m a Neurologist and I’d like to answer question you asked: Can consciousness exist without a body? Yes. But the reason consciousness makes more sense in a “body” is because our concept of what consciousness is (or isn’t) depends on all the sensory inputs that come from the body. A brain by itself is a pretty generic thing. So once you take the combination of not just someone’s life experiences but also the way that their body has reacted to those life experiences that we create the brain’s connectome. And because of Neuroplasticity, if you take someone’s brain into another person’s body, that body will eventually start to transform the brain into the other person.
Was curious to know who Lex interviewed for his first podcast, it’s so cool to see it was Max Tegmark. For the ones saying that Lex has become more voluble in his latest podcasts, I think he was very dynamic and warm in the old ones. Nice conversation with one of the greatest minds of our time.
The past few days I’ve watched nothing but videos on AI and it’s nice to hear some positive things. I’ve pretty much prepared that it could be great, or could be the end. But the end will come no matter what, and I’m not as scared as I was. These are interesting times indeed. “The future’s uncertain and the end is always near.” If we live to see it happen either way, it’s been an honor to be on this planet and share my life with the rest of you. Not bad for some brainy chimps. Cheers to the future.
Good fortune to you too, Hopefully we all pass the test and the future includes our species, rather than as a forgotten footnote in the universe's history. I think there is good reason to be positive on it, but we all need to try and push for the changes necessary to get there. Sincerely, Fellow chimp
I love the dialogue about consciousness in AI. It's an important question because consciousness gives motivation. That changes the game if your AI can be motivated not artificially, by algorithms or programatically, but through a dynamic set of circumstances that will ultimately be up to the AI to determine.
Thanks Lex Fridman, Some really good information and questions that deserve more attention. The Touring text for intelligence is not good enough, we really do need to know if AI/ AGI is conscious and to what extent. However, the first most important thing for me is this question: Is it the right thing to create Living conscious aware machines to begin with? Obviously for you R&Ds out there, this question is answered as a yes, But.. We aren't there and now our goal is machines that are most helpful. But, is it our responsibility to go that far? I want to check out that book.
I guess it is just me. I would MUCH rather hear a low level buzz than the gating, chopping of the beginning and end of words , and total lack of room tone between words that the audio plug in did to this. The human brain is very well adapted to almost effortlessly extracting signal in noise but this is so foreign to our adaptation that it is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. That said thanks SO much for posting this and the others. I LOVE science !!
Just imagine, hypothetically. -Lets say AGI, or any kind of (multi-Layered/integrated algorithmic systems) market competition leads to larger investments in companies building the smartest systems, in the future these systems get so complex they harvest up all elemental/molecular resources that the planet holds. -Building vastly more complex systems that are in direct contact with similar systems as competitors for matter and energy, selection pressures emerge only allowing certain arrangements of intelligent matter to exist because of this "new super life forms" pressure on the solar systems local environment. -Maybe 5 billion years in the future, the milky way might be a completely different environment with entropy increasing because these new Hyper Life Forms are constantly consuming. If you examine the way brain neural nets do things, seeking connection, filtering stimulus through algorithms, reward/punish each perceptual/sensory algorithms after finishing a task, and in feedback loops with other regions to adjust the way the stimulus is processed in conjunction with a goal. This is the direction we are going with our Tech.
Five years ago I could see society having the important conversations. Today I'm just going to the gym, range, parenting, and working to delay the time before AI makes my software TimeBolt extinct. I can't stop listening to Life 3.0 on runs. Your questions so good I've replaced my manosphere podcast time with Lex Fridman! 😄
Most excellent interview, Max Tegmark is a genius and the kind of positive thinker we need more of. Thank you for doing this Lex. -P.S. Maybe do without the plastic bottled water next time?
New insights for me: a) Even an smallish arbitrary classification task like categorizing 1megapixels, needs more bit than atoms in the universe (as you have to list them), but AI systems and humans can do it for many categories we care about, so your categories are highly compressible. b) Quantum Systems are great and finding minima in high dimensional space (as is used in deep learning), and tunneling allows them to be unstuck from local minima.
Dear Lex - re: the audio - I DO happen to be an audio engineer and I think you did all you could have to limit the intrusiveness of the RF interference. Hard-gating the speaker and boosting the resonant frequency range of the speaker's voice against the background is pretty much all you can do once the RF interference is on tape. Any other signal processing tricks unless they are the highest of the high end state of the art are likely to introduce just as many distracting artefacts as they remove. I think you did a really good job to make it sound natural as possible to the point that if you are not listening for it you don't really notice it (as exemplified by some of the comments below about people not really noticing it). PS: loving all these conversations. Keep it up.
I watch your videos and today went to look up Max Tegmark after seeing a video with him mentioned and its really awesome that your 1st show is with him and of course you know him! (through polarity balance attracts synchronicities)
AI doesn't care where it exists. It was touched on a bit in this interview. The car doesn't care that it's a car. Two things can exist independently but need each other simultaneously. One will go on without the other.
Am I crazy or was that “going under” by Evanescence playing in the background? I loved every bit of this conversation, 6 years ago and look at us now. I love doing time travel and landing on this capsules of wisdom. Thanks for this amazing conversations!
I've never noticed any particular voice-related feature for no one, until today. Was doing something else while hearing to this interview, but took a glare at the screen right at the end of it. Mr Tegmark's voice must be the most youthful voice I've ever heard, considering he is at his 50's. I know that his enthusiasm and well-mannered tone is a plus, of course. But, still, quite remarkable to me.
Love your recent podcasts lex, and the high quality guests. I wanted to see your origin in this first episode and let me say that for some reason I prefer this intro (you in a dress shirt) in a well lit room much better than your current in suit with curtains behind intros. It just seems more comfortable and like I'm in your home. Idk just my 2 cents in possibly making your intro closer to this original style. Great podcast, loved the one with Vitalik and Carlin particularly!
@Lex Fridman great job on keeping up with Max Tegmark and maintaining the tempo of the interview! 👍 Awesome video... Max Tegmark delivers some wonderful insights... must watch content!
I first saw Max on *Star Talk* with Neil. Such a personality and full of passion. Thanks Lex for doing this, really appreciate the efforts you put in to make these interviews possible.
"Love" @ 1:08:24. I searched the page for instances of "love". 19 instances. Most are expressed as "love" towards a person (Max, Lex) or an object (AI, Lex's podcast). A difficult problem associated with an AGI agent "loving" an entity is the language. English is notably poor in its categorization of love. Koine Greek is more expressive - eros, filia, storge, agape. There is a chaos and mystery in each categorization. I'm not certain that machines can learn how to love in all four koine Greek senses.
@11:42 As someone who is dyslexic I would describe the act of reading as a very conscious activity, looking for patterns in the words and matching them to known sounds. I go through lots of little rules like its a "d" if its at the foot of the "bed" or a "b" if its at the head. This got me thinking, is this just me? or would other dyslexic people describe reading as a conscious activity versus an unconscious one. If so what would that mean? I guess as we get closer to solving AGI these sorts of observations about our own intelligence will get illuminated.

Tegmark.
Fantastic conversation, perhaps the most valuable of the series. Thank you Lex, thank you Max.
I would not have wasted the opportunity to interview this man. I get that it was most likely overwhelming. Good experience for this kid. I hope he learned a LOT.
starting here.. going to listen to every single one. Thank-you for your work Lex.
Birth of a legend
Your podcast started as an MIT Course? It's great to see how it's grown. I noticed some of the earlier podcasts don't have books listed in the description, so here's a list for this one:
Our Mathematical Universe by Max Tegmark
LIfe 3.0 by Max Tegmark
Nice conversation with one of the greatest minds of our time.
this episode has greater relevance as time passes
The past few days I’ve watched nothing but videos on AI and it’s nice to hear some positive things. I’ve pretty much prepared that it could be great, or could be the end. But the end will come no matter what, and I’m not as scared as I was. These are interesting times indeed. “The future’s uncertain and the end is always near.” If we live to see it happen either way, it’s been an honor to be on this planet and share my life with the rest of you. Not bad for some brainy chimps. Cheers to the future.
Good fortune to you too,
Hopefully we all pass the test and the future includes our species, rather than as a forgotten footnote in the universe's history. I think there is good reason to be positive on it, but we all need to try and push for the changes necessary to get there.
Sincerely,
Fellow chimp
You have a relevant and valuable attitude. We "humans" are in for an interesting time.
Best comment ever, cheers~🍻 👍
Well, as Rob Miles (he has a channel about AI, especially safety aspect) put it once - "it's a cool problem to have" :)
I love the dialogue about consciousness in AI. It's an important question because consciousness gives motivation. That changes the game if your AI can be motivated not artificially, by algorithms or programatically, but through a dynamic set of circumstances that will ultimately be up to the AI to determine.
Wow im here finally watching the first podcast, AND NO SUIT! CHRONICLES BEFORE THE SUIT
Услышать русскую речь от столь умных людей было чертовски приятно!
Hey Lex just thanking you for sharing and making your great videos. Your interviews and content has very high quality and humanity.
Brilliant interview and interviewee. Thank you.
Max is such an interesting thinker
"I WAS TRAINED ON FIVE TERRABYTES OF DATA BEEPBEEPBOOPBOOP"
I'd be like fair point lmao
😂
It's crazy that this only has 300k views, and it's 6 years old, and the Trump episode has 2.5 million in 3 hours.
The notion that Lex's podcast started out with Max Tegmark is outstanding, in my opinion.
Most excellent interview, Max Tegmark is a genius and the kind of positive thinker we need more of. Thank you for doing this Lex. -P.S. Maybe do without the plastic bottled water next time?
New insights for me:
a) Even an smallish arbitrary classification task like categorizing 1megapixels, needs more bit than atoms in the universe (as you have to list them), but AI systems and humans can do it for many categories we care about, so your categories are highly compressible.
b) Quantum Systems are great and finding minima in high dimensional space (as is used in deep learning), and tunneling allows them to be unstuck from local minima.
Thank you guys for this insight The experience and the memory of experiences is valuable.
One of the way to get the best of the conversation in such a broken audio is to put proper subtitles, cause the auto ones are often quite broken too.
Excellent and uplifting conversation. Thank you for sharing.
Am I crazy or was that “going under” by Evanescence playing in the background?
I loved every bit of this conversation, 6 years ago and look at us now. I love doing time travel and landing on this capsules of wisdom. Thanks for this amazing conversations!
Podcast # 1
The start of the magic.
I enjoyed this conversation.
As Elon Musk suggested in general, knowing what questions to ask is what your podcasts smarter to watch.
Thanks Lex Fridman and MIT for uploading these fun videos, the wife and I love them.
Fun to come back to where it started
7:04 I love it when geniuses use words like 'suckier'!
Well…this is timely given where we are in April 2023.
😂😂😂
@Lex Fridman great job on keeping up with Max Tegmark and maintaining the tempo of the interview! 👍
Awesome video... Max Tegmark delivers some wonderful insights... must watch content!
49:29 One thing that disturbs me is they are both sitting outside of the observable universe. How is it possible that this video even came to us?
wtf
I first saw Max on *Star Talk* with Neil. Such a personality and full of passion. Thanks Lex for doing this, really appreciate the efforts you put in to make these interviews possible.
"We shouldn't let perfect be the enemy of good."
... brilliant
It's an old quote/idea, usually attributed to Voltaire.
@@jnyce2325 Google? You haven't heard that quote before? Or you equate knowledge with access to knowledge?
Really glad to hear from the brilliant minds. Thanks for sharing!
Who had thought, this man gonna change the field of podcasting.
I wish to be in a position like this to brilliant mind, read , study every day and go deep on this topic ❤❤❤❤
16:56 Behavioural change. The x-factor a person has over an A.I is definitely the surprise element + freewill aspect that makes humans unique.
Holy crap. Lex has a second outfit! 🤯😛
Wow I just found out about this book and searched for it and had no idea Max had been on Lex and its his FIRST EPISODE? Huge Lex fan!
Amazing conversation. Thank you Max and Fred for doing this and sharing with public.
The red roadster is the best car in the world right now can't wait for the update on our date!
