Trains in the U.K. are a total disgrace and have been since WW2 despite all of the efforts made in the decades since - the SailRail product offering between the U.K. and Ireland needs a massive overhaul and is only just one example of this - renationalising of the railways is not going to solve the problems and the role of the trade unions in this has to be looked into, as they, on top of not properly representing the interests of rail workers, have been holding back real progress and innovation on the railways for decades - lack of government investment is part of the problem but it’s not the only issue - the only solution is for an external body to come in from the Far East and be given complete and direct control of the U.K. railways to bring them up to acceptable international standards, being backed by laws passed through Parliament to prevent any interference with their work and this involves increased restrictions being placed on trade unions regarding the right to strike and many other issues - the standard of passenger service needs to be improved and fares need to come down - there is no real reason why a high speed and/or luxury direct train service between Hull (with connection to York), Leeds, Manchester Victoria (with connection to Liverpool) to Holyhead cannot be built across the North of England and North Wales, with a high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin Connolly (or Dublin Docklands) to connect with the Dublin Belfast line
