Simply amazing that a 24 year old Matt Garstka wrote and recorded these drum-parts almost ten years ago! 😳🤩
What savage. I didn’t know he was THAT young.
He was, and then he played at this level, so he was a beast even before then, he joined the band at 22!
@@flowerlandofjohn incredible when you think about it. I'm not gonna go and say he was born with sticks, but that's definitely some good long years of *loving* music more than anything to get there at 22-24.
Wow what an incredible song!! Complex 🥁 tune is an understatement... And a 24 yr old wrote it!!??? Wtf
@@BobLoeber Well, I’m not sure he wrote the whole song himself. They probably wrote it as a band, but he however certainly wrote all of the drum parts 👍🏻
Joy of Motion is such an amazing album.
Iconic and super influential as well. Literally paved the way for ALL instrumental prog/djent that came after
HELL YES.
An all-time great album imo
Maybe my favourite of theirs
Ethereal, majestic, eargasmic. A perfect prog instrumental album. And the songs are not even that long. My favorite song of the album is Para Mexer, such a beautiful song, followed by Tooth and Claw (THAT breakdown. So heavy. So good)
When El Estepario Siberiano is using two hands, you know it's a hard song. 🤯
😂
that part!!
💀
really
does that mean toxicity is hard?
You know it's a REALLY hard drum part when El Estepario is barely smiling or only doing one or two stick tricks while executing it 😅
Yeah one of the really rare times where he isnt overplaying the song lol.
You can see that he is smiling on the inside tho:D
He's using both hands.....
And not drinking coffee!
Or simply using both hands
Something no one talks about and as a drummer of 30 years I feel like I have to point out that his posture is absolutely perfect. His upper torso barely moves. Completely efficient. Something that is sorely overlooked by most drummers.
Never noticed that u til now wow
Him and Matt Greiner have that same straight posture. Both kickass drummers
Billy Cobham advocates these sentiments in his video 'Drums By Design.'
This guy is strongly build… shoulders, arms, torso. Not every drummer is build like that. This is an advantage. And going to the gym (for the other guys) does not make you a better drummer 😅
Had the same thought. I'm by no means a highly skilled drummer, but I picked it back up at 31 with a band, and have improved immensely the last 5 years since. And I can tell what a major difference it does to speed and accuracy to be able to have limbs not only move independently from each other, but also from the torso.
However, there is something to be said for the "efficiency" of upper body movement in very slow grooves, ballads, waltzes etc.. I feel like it can improve my groove immensely to have a gentle "up and down" rocking of my torso, specially when playing brushes.
One of the biggest benefits El Estepario does on RUclips is literally educate and open the minds of non-drummers and non metal music fans: in terms of the huge talent the world has in terms of metal and hard rock, Animals as Leaders is our case in point.
Amen
Man…I can only imagine how hard you work to achieve this level. You deserve all the recognition you are receiving.
I think it was like 8 hours of practice a day, I don't remember for how much time but it was more than 3 years for sure
I wish he would just do original music but that doesn’t get clicks and clicks pay the bills
He also just has a ton of latent talent.
He posted a video a while ago of himself at 16 and he's doing grooves that even a lot of seasoned drummers can't perform
@@fancykarlmarx some people prefer covers or dont have the resources to create music. Also AAL isnt exactly meant for clicks, they're music for musicians which makes them pretty unpopular
@@grahammehl1710 oh I wasn’t trying to disparage the man. He’s incredible no matter what he does.
The technicality of everything in this song is mindblowing. The fact that at least two people can play this song flawlessly is a feat in and of it's own.
😂
He can't play Kobaryo's "Singularity at 2.64e+6 BPM" even at 1% speed (26400 BPM).
@@arboreal_aspect "Heavy methul is da only real musico"?
@@arboreal_aspect You could've just made fun of it for being an impossible to play tempo. Instead we get the closed-minded "computer generated garbage" line to laugh at.
@@arboreal_aspect No need to describe yourself now.
I appreciate that you still add your own flare to these mind-blowingly complicated songs. You're getting really good with ghost notes and subtle accents.
As an avid fan of AAL this is amazing. If Matt ever needed a break from a tour they need you as the fill in.
Can't wait for another tribute to Garstka's (already legendary) drumming.. my favorite youtube musician covering my favorite drummer 😄
Garstka has been one of my favorites for a while! The man is a beast! I do however love who I would consider his counter-part also, Matt Halpern as well!
Same bro, same
You should meet the guy. Will ruin your dreams in five seconds
I am dealing with so much after my husband passed and people just being so mean to me for no reason - and you and your talent is one of the few things these days that truly just makes me smile and I appreciate that
@@kylecooke9893 you know your message alone brought me so much joy tho I am still has me crying at the same time … thank you so much
I hope the best for y’all. Stay strong
I'm sorry for your loss and even more that you're experiencing cruelty from those around, but I'm here to tell you that time will help you with the pain of losing your husband, and also you now know who to remove from your life. The would can be a very cold and brutal place, but it is also where all the beauty, kindness, and all we love is to be found. Keep your head up, this will soon be past chapter in your journey.
@@magneticpupful absolutely!! I am still so sorry to hear about your loss. The pain of losing someone is a mighty feeling..but I can assure you, if there is ANYONE you can talk to it is me. I promise. You have a great day, and even if we talk through random RUclips comments, that's okay with me. 🙂🤟❤
I lost my husband suddenly to a heart attack and listening to music and talent like this helps ease the pain of grief. And the best goes on…..
AAL has cemented themselves as prog metal Gods with the release of The Joy of Motion. One of the best albums I've ever heard.
Probably the most enjoyable performance I've seen you play. The showmanship with your speed and one handed fills are impressive, but this performance shows your retension for longer performances with many changes which can be challenging mentally rather than physically. Very impressive!
When I was a teen (90’s) I always wanted a jazz metal fusion band to listen to, and the closest I got was Meshugga. When Animals as Leaders came around I just fell in love with them. Great work!
Cynic was around in the 90s. Did you ever get into them?
@@michaelmaloney7514
Un superbateria!! descanse en paz.
Cynic was around in the 90's, incredible band, listen to their album focus.
This guy isn't just a musician, hes a magician. That was magical
Part mathematician!
Indeed!
@@rtripp25100%
I mean, think about the drummer that wrote the song. 😉
He's a musician
This is easily their best album to date imo. Every song was such a beautiful developing piece of art that you could really feel being weaved in real time.
Agreed. Madness of many is very technically impressive but only the brain dance stands out to me as a track
Joy of Motion has some good songs but the 2009 first album is their best imo. It hit at the right time and is just special. Their most musical album.
@@bobsondugnutt7526 It sucks that people only share like 2 songs off their first album. Not a bad song on there and so many absolute bangers and utterly unique sounds. Song of Solomon, Innamorata, The Price of Everything and all the delicious jazzy interludes are so underrated. The ultimate fun time road trip album for 'djent' lovers.
@@DrummerJesusnahh Arithmophobia and Backpfeifengesicht also specifically stand out to me. But i agree TJOM is their masterpiece, every song there is a banger
Hardest song he has played and yet he makes it look like it's nothing. Simply an incredible drummer hands down no arguments!
He’s really good dont get me wrong. But he surely didn’t make it look like it’s nothing. He messed up several times and he knows it, you can tell by his facial expressions. He’s more stiff and ghosts notes are not as present as when it’s Gartska. A lot of snare hits are off. That being said, yes he’s an incredible drummer and this is a really good performance.
Just wanted to point out that he didn’t make it look like it’s nothing on this one. The struggle was real.
@@Chnkptrue but I swear only a very very few drummers can actually play this
@@Chnkpohhhh come on! 6 minutes of absolute madness, and it’s one take! Without edit/cuts. It’s ok to do minor mistakes, he is not an AI or robot.
@@Alex_994 you missed his point though
@@Chnkpagree. And, what you don't see are all the failed attempts, you only see the released version.
One of my favorite songs from them, your accents and fills are right on point. That's the most I've seen you improvise on one of Matt's tracks. Killed it
This is Buddy Rich in our modern times. All the techniques, strategies and shops are simply explained here. This man is the portal between those legendary drummers and our current times. He is the school.
His precision is absurd. I'm glad that such performances are recorded here in youtube.
I already know this is going to be insane. Always love when El does AAL!
@@harrytwobob3416Woven Web and C.A.F.O. are up there. I have like a top 20 favorites with bands like Animals as Leaders, Polyphia, Periphery and such lol.
Bro, just when I thought you couldn’t get any better. You just leveled up. I’m sure matt garstka him self is salivating at this. You nailed the song and then added even more crazyness to it, amazing.
Saw Animals As Leaders in my hometown Gävle, Sweden back in 2019 together with TesseracT, Freak Kitchen, Jinjer and others. Fantastic show!
Fantastic drum cover. Not many can manage that.
This is what mastery looks like. Thanks for an excellent cover! ♥.♥ Animals as Leaders is one of my favorite bands of all time. So much talent packaged in just three people. What a thrill to listen to.
The first song I ever heard by Animals as Leaders was Brain Dance. It was shared with me by a friend, an accordion player, as we discussed epic guitarists. I had no idea what I was in store for. I have been a fan ever since. I missed my chance to see them live as the pandemic began, but I will definitely go if the opportunity presents itself again. From the time signature changes that seem effortless in their hands and the range of style from songs like Brain Dance and heavy Spanish guitar influence from Javier on Apeirophobia, to the urgency created by the skillful madness Matt unleashes at 2m20s on Ectogenesis, I was completely infatuated the more I listened. There's something especially wonderful and otherworldly about the art they create together.
I am a lover of all kinds of music and I'm waiting with great anticipation to hear what your new band brings to the table. I'd wish you great success, but I already feel you cannot fail. ♥ Thank you for sharing what you do with all of us.
you need to do a shred sesh with matt garstka dude thatd be fucking legendary
that right there might actually break the internet...
He won't because Gartska would blow him out o the water.
This guy is an insta drummer. Gartska wrote the part, recorded it, made it sound good. This guy mimmicked him and it sounded like shit.
@@awilliams379What an asswipe of a comment.
@@awilliams379i didnt think he sounds like shit, but he fucks up most covers with his im very fast shtick
@@awilliams379 are you having your period?
My man you're the only one I've ever seen who managed not to only flawlessly plan an Animals As Leaders song, but to improve it as well. You did it with Tooth and Claw and you doubled that with this video. Hats off, I have no doubts in saying that you're the best drummer alive, maybe ever.
zach hill though
I wouldnt call it improving, just kinda doing his thing
@@c0hink176 his playing is pretty tasteful to me, and that's what improves it. I've seen Matt playing it too and IMO El Estepario is a bit better
I mean besides Matt G. The only one I enjoyed the way Je played this song was Luke Holland but man. Estepario is such a monster.
This guy is a total monster, but the Meinl Festival version of Matt is more my cup of tea, it really comes down to personal preferences. Both drummers are insane
Amazing job. Huge AAL fan. Woven Web is probably my favorite song from them. Man, Matt is a beast and their first drummer Navene is incredible and killing it with Entheos.
Now this is the stuff I've been waiting for. Your technicality with their technicalities.... been craving it. Amazing.
One of the best drum covers of all times!
INSANE cover! Love watching your vids!
I was going to play drums, I saw that notification, now I just wanna wait for it. As always it will be freaking incredible for sure !
Edit : after watching the video, I can confirm that I'm blown away and that this guy is truly a legend ! I watch you since 2020 and I've never seen a drummer that good but still progressing
EL is one of the best drummers on the planet today- his range and knowledge of the percussions are pretty much unmatched right now!!
I like that no one could disagree with you even in a comment section!!
I don't know how you did it, but you just made me like drums more than guitar. it was inconceivable to me 😮
Hardest song youve played?!
1. it was flippin Amazing!
2. You did not appear to struggle at any point.
3. Through it all, you were still having fun within the difficulty of this Amazing song, even doing a couple stick tricks when possible..
Brother it is so awesome to witness the fruits of your hard work.. you dont get to this level without the effort.. i hope everyone else in Awe understands that.. You/We can reach this lvl of drumming as well.. if we simply commit to it..
Keep em comin ya Damn Beast!! 😏😎🤙
My favourite drummer, covering my favourite song, by my favourite band!! I can’t fking contain my excitement and awe! Thank you so much brother, this was SUCH a treat to watch ❤
Ffs, not even Garstka is that relaxed playing this song...
Way to do it real justice man, it's awesome to hear you tackling AAS!
Prolly not that high either 😂
Def one of my fav drummers of all, now hearing u play it just made my day u guys are amazing❤❤❤
The polyrhythms and syncopations! Dude really has talent!
I used to watch your videos to help me learn songs. Now my brain is just trying to comprehend what you’re doing
Same here…and I’ve been playing for 42 years
Dude I can’t believe I stumbled across this guy years ago and I thought to myself, how does this guy not have a million yet? Now he’s at 2.3M. Crazy🤯
Just amazing. Your mastery of polyrhythms is A+ kick ass
I majored in percussion and you have out worked us all, sir. Thank you for showing us what the final boss looks like when you’re strong enough to do all the things it takes to get there. Christ is Lord.
Dedication and practice. Any drummer who can record or cover this is on a different planet. Excellent..
This was awesome. And again i can´t wait for the reactions. I also love when you are using the extra tom. Great sound too!
You know a musician is good when he can play any of Animals as Leaders' songs, let alone add their own fills without damaging the song
I think he also slightly accelerated the song
What an incredible performance! Would love to hear more Animals as Leaders from this album and Cognitive Contortions.
simplesmente animal... teu trabalho nesta canção e obviamente em outras foi excepcional. Parabéns
AAL drummer is amazing! And of course, so is EES! Two beast drummers...absolute legends!!! 👍👏💪
Man what does it feel like knowing that you are the best drummer in the world right now I mean, has it even come to your attention that you have finally become the greatest drummer in the world well done my friend well done
Muuuuuuy fuerte parce... de verdad que vuelas con esas baquetas!! el mejor !!... te envio la mejor energía man :)
I love animals as leaders. Found them a few years ago. They remind me of the really smart kids in school. I have no idea how they do it. But I just sit back and enjoy it.
You're the chillest best drummer i've seen.
You are the HANDS DOWN THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD!!!!!!
It's just impossible not to like this video! This is on another level drumming
Love how you put your personal touch on all your covers even one as complex as this 👍👍
You are AMAZING, and HUMBLE, and PERSONABLE. You are the consumate professional. You are blessed and have worked hard to perfect the skills you are blessed with. Thank you for sharing your gift.
Amazing how accurate your timing is, feels like you are micro leading the song instead of following it slightly behind as most cover tend to do
O siberiano transcendeu entre a técnica Felling precisão há muito tempo hj e o melhor batera do mundo.
Man I love watching you play. It’s a privilege to be able to hear it let alone see it.

@2MinuteHockey i belive that song is by Cattle Decapitation....but yes, he should play it
Those time signatures are awesome, gotta hold your mouth just like that to hit those right.
i think this is the one time where you being super robotic and having incredible timing is actually your downfall. You seem to be consistently ahead of the beat here, which makes sense because Garstka is a jazz drummer and they typicall play on the back end of the beat. Though I respect the effort and your playing, this one just isn't it chief.
Me gusta cuando usas un drum kit donde se puede apreciar la musicalidad de los toms y los demás elementos 💪🏻
respect to you, this song is from is one of my favorite albums
Keep drumming sir! You're not the hero we deserved, but you're the hero we need.
You even mimic his breathing time measures and how he uses his body as a metronome, AMAZING
He's adding so many additional layers in parts
Matt Garstka is a monster. Excellent job!
My gosh. This guy playing Matt Gartska is such a treat to see.
If only matt had daily uploads
Most focus I have seen on your face during a set. Like you were doing math in you head while drumming. Looked comfortable AF in second half. Awesome 👌
You are crazy man 🤯🤯🤯 you are are a huge inspiration...thank you 🙏🙏🙏greetings from germany 🇩🇪
It's really cool to see amazing musicians covering other amazing musicians' work.
Dude!!!!! How?????!!!!! You are my all time favorite drummer. You are a living legend!!!!!
BRAVO...this is insane! Really, insanely incredible spot on perfection. You sir, have just earned another subscriber. When you're that good sometimes it looks effortless but we all know how technical this is. If I ever reach a level anywhere near this then my soul will be overflowing with satisfaction. Fuck man, way to lead the game...
Very often you showcase speed, but with this one, you really show your chops... polyrhythms galore, and it was beautiful. I like that you had a more complex kit to play with to. It sounds weird to say, but you are a real inspiration El Estepario Siberiano.
That's the difference between a talented drummer/musician and a talented drummer. He is the talented drummer!
That form and those finger techniques are amazing.
Crazy good... You have a photographic memory
What it looks like when a genius picks up drum sticks. But I’m pretty sure this man would excel at anything he wants to do. 💪😎👍
As Deadpool Said.... " I should have worn my White Pants "
Just wow...what skill,technique, and grace.
i have never seen anyone thins relaxed having such pressure
My brain just melted at the complexity of this whole thing. Damn dude.
Want to see something cool while you watch this video? Watch the ride cymbal while he plays. It looks like it slowly flexes, because the frame rate and the vibration rate of the cymbal are just slightly off from each other. Really cool visual effect.
Dude... So tight an clean, no extra movement, I don't even play drums but you can just tell, so so technically perfect. watching true mastery with El es 🙏
Respect. What we would all like to see is you creating your most complicated/impossible to be covered drum session
So offtempo it's so crazy and fast ass fills. Mind blown 🤟
