I had the pleasure of seeing Pat's trio a few years before he passed at the Regatta Bar in Boston. What an absolute legend; I was lucky enough to be seated up front about 20 ft from Pat, best concert ever. My friend and I demolished a bottle of wine, and were quite boisterous in comparison with the rest of the crowd. We were cheering and really getting into it and We definitely made Pat laugh and smile while he was playing by treating the jazz room like a rock concert. RIP Pat Martino.
You can get Pat Martino’s “Symmetrical Parental Forms” under your fingers right now. It’s easier than you think. Pat recognized 2 chords are being the “parents” (starting points) of other chords. 1) The Augmented triad, so play 554 on the GBE for C+. Move any of those notes DOWN? Form 3 major triads (E-G#-C). Move any of those C+ notes UP? Form 3 (relative) minor triads. - So 6 other triads parented by each Aug. triad, 2) The Diminished 7th chord, so play 4545 on the DGBE. Move any note DOWN? Form 4 Dominant 7th chords. Move any note UP? Form 4 Half-Dim7 chords (min7b5). - So that’s 8 other 7th chords parented by each Dim7. - - - Martino was a genius to notice what was “automatic” on the guitar. The Augmented triad repeats every 4 frets; and the Diminished 7th chord repeats every 3 frets. And those two easy-to-fret structures serve as “symmetrical parents” or starting points for other chords.
It seems that what he's talking about is the "school of life," that everything we encounter is life and we learn whether we want to or not. So the best one can do is to be aware of this constant learning that makes our life. Right on.
We talk about being "in the zone". But that is something that we go into and then exit. If this fluid state that Pat presents is hard ti get to it's.because it is so easy. It involves Not doing -- ecouraging our usual engineered modes to "fall away". Fritz Perls' "Don't push the river.....” comes to mind What a gift is Pat to/for us..🏇
I think when a performance is not going well musicians tend to pull back, play more conservatively, and rely more on their crowd pleasing licks. When it is perceived as going well, the player will be more adventurous, push the envelope, and play more for themselves. That is why the audience will often think the opposite.
you are right pat, but they not even can measure covid tests right, how do you expect them to quantify "felling". we are trying to do that for 2000 years or more, and this is why we wind up more and more without it. and that's why our art is so badass, one of those things you can't see, but it's strong as shit.

Great insight. One of the best musicians alive today and a really special person.
When I’ve heard Pat talk previously it sounded like he was speaking a different language, this was very accessible and helpful and wise
I'm floored.

That's some pretty heavy observations right there! Thank you Pat 👃
here and now
What a mentor to share that insight.

Very plausible! Depends on who is in the crowd, for sure.
❣Thank you ❣
Amen!
Wisdom.
Master!!
Indeed
Pat is hip
I have no idea what he's saying, but they're straight facts
Very interesting person 🙏👍
Does anybody know if he was able to read music towards the end of his life? It would be really cool if he did. I'm already very inspired by his story
Yes - not to the point of being a "sight-reader" but he could read. I don't think he was ever in many situations where he needed the skill.
@@effsixteenblock50 thank you
i think the video title can be improved
:) Man yes...Real book = Meh...The Universal fabric of existence as it exists in the now. Now you have Pat's attention :)
Agreed.
