- After the Rover 220 Coupe T Series head gasket and timing belt change last episode, this time I need to spend a day putting all the odds and ends back, reconnecting wires and pipes, and finally turning the key to see if Ive saved or destroyed this engine!

I know that this is an 'after the horse has bolted' comment, but whenever I take anything apart, I always take photos AND make sketches in a notebook dedicated to that particular car. I also leave the right bolts with components, and I often keep bolts in their holes by covering the heads in masking tape. This approach has been invaluable during the 36 year restoration of my Morris Traveller!!!
1:54 at least the petrol pouring out of the fuel line looked nice and clean. whoops
Matt let it pour out so it would clean off all the old engine oil 🤣
I loved the 80/90's at least the cars were designed properly and didn't all look the same.
So glad you have kept on going. My husband commented to you to keep on... and you have. We watch your channel together, and both agree that you have come so far and have a good aptitude for car repair/restoration. So glad that you didn't give up!😊
Thank you! And thanks for watching
The fuel ⛽️ is gushing out of the filter! Fuel hoses aren’t connected! 😱 Matt before you start rebuilding things look 👀 back your own videos! And don’t forget to like 👍🏻 and subscribe!😂😂😂 But , smoking succes 😉 Matt!! Well done , fired up at the first starting attempt! 👍🏻👍🏻 🆙 like allways!
As a ex-216 (SLI) Rover Automatic owner, it's always good to see another Rover taking another step to be put on the road again. Hope all goes well and the 'Tomcat' gets a clean bill of health, and graces the Tarmac soon.
Crikey I remember that episode where the rear window shattered! Definitely a very good idea to take photos of wiring and plugs, etc before doing any job to avoid inevitable issues with reassembly. Good to see the progress Matt
That was a shocker of a day! This has been parked indoors ever since to keep the front off it
I've had two R8's, a 214i (1994) and a 216 Gsi (1992) i love them. I would love a coupe. One day i will own one... Great cars ❤
Well done Matt, can i suggest you run, the car when near full temperature with the expansion tank ,lid off, you must get out all the air otherwise you can gat a hot spot which will cause head gasket failure, i've done a few Rover heads one 2001 Rover 75 that my wife owned and found that although the needle says hot the bottom hose was still warm until i removed the air from the system via the bleed screw and expansion tank . Good luck and congratulations on keeping another classic on the road. Regards Roger.
One more thing mate, make sure your heater settings are set to max hot( no blower) that way no air can sit in the matrix, sorry I should have included that earlier. Regards Roger.
Bits left over, must have been surplus! Great job Matt, she sounds terrific. I'm looking forward to seeing you driving this summer.
I love this car. It's still firmly in my Furious Fleet Top 3 and Tahiti Blue remains my favourite car colour ever!
Great to see it living again and continuing to prove what a reliable starter it is. It would be lovely to meet it at Rustival 2
Now that was big progress on the Tomcat Matt, you definitely deserve a pat on the back for that job.
Yipee I'm here Matt. Keep doing what you're doing. 10/10
10/4 will do!
Beautiful colour, beautiful car. I’ve always loved those Rover Tomcats 👌🏻
great job getting the Tom Cat running again, well done Matt.
I got a Tomcat as my everyday driver a year ago.
When I got it I was offered a 1997 Rover 416SLi free if I collected it. It had Brake issues but now sorted.
It is now our family car and the most modern in our fleet. Cheap insurance too.
That's a good looking driveway, great cars!
I remember seeing the Tomcat fairly frequently when I first started following this channel years ago, and I remember when you had that issue with the broken backlight, but then it disappeared for a long time. Good to see it back up and running again.
the oil leak got worse and worse so I stopped using it for a while
Congratulations, making lots of progress on the fleet
Another to job Matt. I think we've all assembled things only to have to take them apart again as we missed something. One of the regular ones on the old A series engines was for getting that tiny hose between the head and the block that fortunately later versions of the hose were an accordion shape that you could 'just' about fit after the event depending on the engine. She runs and she's alive and it would be great to see the 'Tomcat' back in the road. Many thanks for sharing.
Anyone else remember the excellent Rover 200 Coupé Racing Series from the mid-1990's. Great little racers these Tomcats.
Yes there’s a survivor in the owners club!
ROVERS Alive...... A great little tinkering video Matt.
Hurrah! Yes, it lives!
Hello, have been a subscriber of yours for a couple of years. You certainly know your stuff on cars! You are “on the road” to 100k! Your Volvo videos were what made me subscribe. I assume you still have it in your fleet?
Yes, it’s still here but not broken so no videos!
Well done sorting that. still got that rav4 if you fancy a fifth gear fix. mot just passed again..
Absolutely love that car! This and the 420 tourer are contenders for my favourites on the fleet, they remind me of my first car which was a 420 GSI Tourer in the same blue as your Tomcat!
That’s an amazing first car, very unusual
@@furiousdriving it was my great aunt's car, I miss it but have a few good photos of when we rescued it from its garage grave
Very decent job Matt! You can be proud of yourself. Purrs like a Tomcat 😁Love this car.
Almost purrs like a Tourer!
Good to see another one of these saved and the fact your son wants it is good but not sure the insurance will be easy or cheap for him
Might be worth getting a car trailer for hippo then you can move cars to the MOT test station. 😊
Nice one Matt.... they are a handsome looking car. Well balanced design, and that colour and wheels set it off nicely...
Thanks! 👍
Excellent! Great to see it running again
I always enjoy your videos, next time consider sandwich bags, masking tape and a sharpie for parts , dont ask me how I know 😉😀👍
Running in the all-together? You'm a brave man, Matt. 😋👍
its very warm in the barn...
Nice one Matt, she's my favorite of your fleet 👍🏴😉
Little tip. If you wet the floor before you start the blasting it will stop a lot of the dust
Making me want a 220coupe more and more..or spice up a 216, dad and neighbour had one, red n blue, do love the old boxy shape n interior, so much more spacious vs the new cars i detail at my job :)
Before draining a cooling system the heater temperature should be set to cold, after refilling set to hot before starting. This helps prevent airlocks in the matrix.
From memory, I dont think you need tax to drive back from an MOT
Ill check that then, that would be handy
@@furiousdriving I think you can't tax it unless it has an MOT, so you have to be able to take it to/from a pre-booked MOT without tax.
Absolutely Brilliant.
You look a lot less Furious now.
Why no Happy Dance??
That 24mm banjo connection isn't a fuel line. It's the vacuum connection to the brake servo.
yeah I realised that after I said it
Great to see the progress Matt .... what happened to your plans of turbo charging it ???
The kit was much too big for it
I'm with you about the nineties, some excellent cars. No massive improvement since then.
You can "fix" that oil leak by elongating the hole in Head and block toward each other. the oilway in block is opposite end to the oilway in head, and the gasket has an oval seal, which leaks. File each oilway with a small triangle file, pressure relieved, oil leak solved.
Ah Dolly and Jack. Sweet sweet couple.
Yippee The Cat is BACK off the Matt 👌🏻, all looking good Matt, just one thing ? I thought I had heard everything on RUclips that could SHOCK me until this video 🤔, Goody goody Gum drops 😂, only a man of a certain age and persuasion could get away with saying that Matt 😂😂👍🏻.
Another car on the road you are on a roll
Matt - the original two tea-mug man!!!
I had a red tomcat in 2001 it was a 1.6 automatic with the Honda engine in it , on a N reg 1995 , I loved that car in bright red with black cloth interior, have you got the black bags to put the glass roof in when you take them out
Talk to Project Nigel / Paul Rover Man, he has an Automatic Rover Honda R8 400 Tourer in red (with a rusty tailgate) that he might sell !
Well, well, we had exactly the same thing happen to our Rover 25 about 5 years back, came out one morning and the rear screen had just crazed over, a slight touch and it just crumbled into the car. Very strange I thought so interesting to hear it isn't unique.
1993 is looking good!
Video approved, Volvo's forever.......I mean Rovers.
Do you use an exhaust hose/extractor???
Well done sounds nice 👍
Great stuff Matt!
Another great video has always matt 👍
Thanks 👍
Matt, I truly think it is time for a new storage barn or shed you need more room. Great vlog. What ever happened to the Rover 75??
I know, I wish I could find/afford somewhere better.
It went to be sold but the HG failed and the mechanic hasn't been over to sort it yet
That is odd. My friend had a 1990 214gsi and I had a Honda Concerto, which was basically the same thing and both our back windows shattered for no apparent reason. I wonder if it happened alot to this model and was some kind of design fault.
It’s inherent stress in the glass, and when it’s been heated and cooled too many times it fails at the stress point where the heater element joins
Who made the bloody leaking sticker? made me chuckle, now want one for my mg metro 😂
It’s from the young retro club
Top job, Matt! 💪🏼😀
Thank you!
Not sure any insurance company will be interested in taking on a teen in a car like this with all the usual council bolt-ons.
Funny coz my neighbour has a SEAT Leon which he woke up to and the rear window was just shattered. - the screen replacement Co said it can happen in extreme heat ( really? And extreme heat in the UK?) suspicion moved to his ex when half a brick was found on the back seat lol
Extreme weather can cause rains of half bricks
Well done that man
My rover 114 has 2 bleed screws and if you don’t do the right sequence to bleed it it’s a complete nightmare
I know Furious Junior would love this as a 1st car, but a 1.8 is unlikely for starter insurance... Keep him the Punto .
My dad worked for British Aerospace during the Rover-owning era. He used to get given different "demonstration" models every 2-3 weeks. My favourite was the (pre-facelift) 214 GSi. - The 216 was quicker but felt more sludgy to accelerate
It's a 2 litre! But being a classic the insurance is often less bad for teens
Did u use the tea shelf?
The engine bay tea shelf was used extensively
Are you still doing the turbo conversion?
I think it’s too big for this engine and bay
@@furiousdriving shame, it would make great content
I thought the actual “tomcat” designation was only for the turbo models!??
No all Coupes
Look a coupe. Miss my R8 3door green over grey
Matt, what was the Rover internal name for the Tourer? 😅
Tourer was Tex and cabrio Tracer
@@furiousdriving Yeah, Tex, that was it. Could remember Tracer but never Tex. I knew you'd tell me eventually Matt 🤣
Tomcat was the turbo not the entire model range.
no, it was the entire coupe range development code name. Cabrio was Tracer and estate Tex
As an American who's never been in / under a Rover, a lot of it looks a bit... Honda-y.
The Rover R8 was a joint development project between Rover and Honda, so you could say the Hondas look a bit Rovery!
The earlier 216 models look even more Honda-y, as they've got Honda engines in them. The ones that rotate the opposite way, so the gearbox is on the other side. They always look weird to me, like looking at the car in a mirror.
You do seem to spend a lot of time fixing Rovers Lol.
I do have quite a few of them..
Shes alive.
If your car is sorn you can go to and from a pre booked MOT appointment without having to tax it
If the fan kicks in then the coolant has been circulating hence the fan kicking in. Heater set to hot and let it run it you have hot air coming through.
Funny story, once took an MGF for an MOT down the road (about 3/4 miles from where I worked), passed the MOT so headed back to work. MGF promptly overheated and blew the HG!!! Limped back to work where told my boss who phoned the customer to tell them the good news. Customer "No it can't of blown the HG isn't never gone before!!!" "Well there's always a first time and it's happened to you Sir!" My boss replied! 😂
Shoukd leep window open so if it locks you can access keys.
its got the abrasive sand on it, dont want to put it down till its washed
@@furiousdriving not much good if you can't get in
@@richardsheil5289 it’s never locked itself in all the years I’ve had it. Some cars do, not this one
@@furiousdriving good news so. I just have a blanket policy. Window open or keys outside. Glad it works for you.
Well that's a result Matt look forward to seeing you drive the Tomcat best regards Andy Allen.
Car design and style was at it's peak in the 1990s amd it went massively downhill in the 00s and now it's the worst it has ever been. New cars are absolutely dreadful apart from literally one or two cars.
I've been a an avid subscriber, I can't handle it anymore, sorry but if you renamed your channel captain bodge then I could.
Good night
Worse than fecking Hubnut.
dont let the door hit you in the arse on the way out. Nothing was bodged and good, please take your negativity somewhere else
1:56 8:32 8:38 16:42 22:03 😂
Too many mugs per square inch in the engine bay for my OCD… the optimum number is zero…!
How can you achieve anything without mugs of tea?
Not sure those gloves are being useful.
