    Hi Emma! Having watched multiple pastel artists this past year (a COVID activity), I have to say your talent, soothing melodic voice and generosity with your real-time videos have put you far ahead of the pack. Thank you, thank you. I also have struggled with cat portraits. I recently did a painting of a leopard and resonated with your comment about cats’ noses. Yes! Maybe the most difficult part due to the shortness and crazy changing direction of fur. Happy to know it isn’t just my inexperience that finds this challenging. You’re awesome!!!

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 года назад

      You should be able to work along with me on velour as the order I do things is exactly the same. Perhaps you'll want to work a little bigger as it's more difficult to get the small detail on velour than on Pastelmat.

  • @raggedymania
    @raggedymania 3 года назад +1

    Your work is so beautiful! I have one question: since you use the black pastel first to put in the dark markings, how do you get your lighter pastels to layer without rubbing some of the black? Mine always spreads black specks around after, I can't get the lights to go on cleanly

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 года назад

      This might be down to either paper or type of pastels? The combination I use with Pastelmat paper and Unison pastels allows me to add light on top of dark to a pretty good degree. Experiment with your materials if you can. Links to what I use in the description below.

  • @lornafolan1748

    Hi Emma, beautiful work ❤️ I want to know how you get such crisp clean lines especially in the whiteish colours. Is it down to practising and the brands and sharpness of the pencils? Many thanks 😊

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 года назад +1

      Hi Lorna, I think a lot of it is down to practise with the soft sticks. You can get fine marks with the sticks without using pencil as I do in a lot of this tutorial. Here is another shorter video about getting different marks with the soft sticks which might help. ruclips.net/video/iTVeB8fJ4ZM/видео.html The light colours in particular are much better applied with the softer pastels, more strength to the colours.

    Hi, beautiful work and you're painting one of my favorite animals. I see that you use your fingers to blend your colors, I 'm a charcoal artist myself and I was thought not to use my fingers to blend because the body oils would turn my art yellowish, does this not happen with pastel oils? I have asked this question to other pastel artist and no one has answered me yet.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 месяца назад

      Thank you! I definitely use my fingers quite a bit and have never seen any change of colour happen. I have framed pieces over 20 years old and all are painted with good quality light fast materials. But that doesn't say that it won't happen given more time I suppose. I think a lot of art is created with the artist's hands and fingers so I'm not going to worry about it too much. Using light fast materials is way more important as that will definitely change colour over time if using cheaper brands.

    Gorgeous cat Emma! I'm wondering if you could recommend an alternative to the Faber castel stick. The hard pastel stick has been discontinued, all the local stock has been bought up. Is there anything high quality and similar to the Faber castel?Thank you.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  2 года назад +1

      I had heard these were going out of production. Not sure where you are, but Prismacolour NuPastel is the slightly better version of these sticks. Their black is actually a little bit darker and a similar square shaped stick. But they're hard to find outside of the US.

    Hy Emma, i would like to know if it would be enough to buy a 36 set of faber castell pastel pencils to draw portraits, clothes and some landscape and also if you have tried the stabilo carbothelo pastel pencils. Thanks in advance for your answer.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  2 года назад

      Sorry for my slow reply. I hope you got what you were looking for. A selection of 36 colours can be great as long as you get a nice range of colours. I have the 36 set of FC and really like them although my use of the pencils is limited. I do like the Carbothellos though. They are a bit softer and would probably choose them if I was working only in pencil without the soft sticks.
