I’m not going to lie. I just found your channel and I was thrown off by your excitement and bouncing around for about 5 seconds until I realized you were doing SP and now I’m bouncing on my couch with my iPad watching this video with your front line assembly episode going on my TV 😬 I love it! Your energy excitement is that energy I get listening to puppy. I’ve tried to explain to my wife but she’s doesn’t get it. I say it’s like abstract art for the ears but she doesn’t get it. To be fair I guess it’s like me trying to sit threw an episode of “masked singer” or “glee” 😂 I just can’t do those hideous show’s! They literally drive anger and frustration out of my bones. Give me puppy songs like “dead lines” and I’m in ohgar vocal heaven. I will never forget going to Hollywood Palladium with my GF (at the time😬) and “Lucy in the sky” breath mints to see Too Dark Park. I’m so happy I found your RUclips channel. Thank you! DOOMDRIVER: Reason is a really great DAW and it sounds amazing. I'm a Logic user, but I have an old iMac whose sole purpose is so I can rewire Thor and Redrum from Reason 5 into Logic 9 (they're both 32-bit). Some day I'll upgrade to the latest version of Reason, can't really afford it now.
Reason is great, @@russell_szabados! I love using Thor, but I'm more of a 'Kong guy' for drums. Love Redrum too, though. Also, I use a few VSTs such as the VacuumPro, and a Predator but I find that with tweaking (which is one of the fun parts) Thor, Subtractor, Maelstrom, and especially Europa get me the sounds I want. :)
Ogre's voice is indeed very special 🖤😁 once you hear it, it changes your life ah ha. I don't know, but those little clips reminded me of Dada poetry, especially at the begining 🤔.

For everyone still trying to replicate the mentioned vocal distortion chain as closely as possible: There is a very close-sounding clone for the Furman PQ3 now - the Master Effects EQ From Hell (EQFH) Pro. (Over)Drive that into a Universal Audio Max pedal, and you´re technically 90% there, the rest is talent :)

Ogre is one of my biggest vocal influences. I recently had someone come up to me and ask me what effects I use to get my vocals to sound the way I do. I use a noise gate to help with feedback, a compressor, maybe some slapback and a slight down pitch shift. He was of course referring to the sound of the vocal itself after clarifying to which I replied "That's just how my voice sounds".. I used to be really self conscious about it... now I just own it.

Yes. In many chains EQ is first instance. Like pedals in front of guitar amps. In most cases the effect or EQ is placed before hitting the amp distortion. I will try that with vocals too. There are fantastically analog distorting sounding VSTs from Tone Empire. I'll try my best to mimic the advice of this video :)

@@hiwattmarshall LocNess is a brutal and analogish sounding crush box with awesome analogish sounding hi and low shelf filters and you can go into total great sounding distortion too. Black Q is principally an analogish EQ but has tube drive modes and can sound very close to hardware too. I think they are both great. Have fun :)
It’s great to hear about the Furman/UA combo for vocals. Around that same time Al Jorgensen used a dbx 160/H3000 combo for Ministry’s distorted vocals. Different hardware, same principles. Both with great results. Although ohGr was born blessed with an amazing voice and the gear only brings out what’s already incredible. He could easily be a Grammy winning voice over actor for movies and video games.
Really neat video that gave me some insights. I've recorded a couple of songs and am in the early stages of planning how i will do it live (It's EBM, somewhat harsh), and i was thinking i could solve quite a bit of it with a kaoss pad. I figure i can even steer it via midi so it loops when it should loop etc, i just gotta make a preset for my vocals.
Thanks for sharing that Ken! I was quite impressed with Ogre's vocal sound during the soundcheck in The Hague a couple years back when I was helping out the Databomb set up Cev's rig. Just found a warp factory for cheap and I can't wait to give this a try!
Great stuff, I still have my two blackface PQ-3’s, an N.E.I. 341 4 band, Ashley Blueface SC-66, BSS DPR-901, all great eq’s for exrteme mangling. Great to know about the Warp Factory, I’ve always ignored them, now I want one, haha.
Could listen to you for hours. Thank you :) I think one cannot have enough tools and units to bring saturation and distortion to mixes. Lately I'm experimenting - beside the usual suspects like Saturn, Spectre or Subvert - much with stomp pedal and amp and cabinet emulations too. I found very good and authentic non digital sounding plugins from Neural DSP and Mercuriall. I still got the Yamaha SPX-90, which has very nasty distortion programs too. Cheers.

Fantastic channel, I just watched a few of them. My god this is bliss! Loved growing up on Skinny Puppy, grew up in the 2000s so I loved hearing early SP. What synths, samplers were the most important while recording? If you don’t mind me asking, I know they’ve used a lot! Once again amazing channel!
This makes me think about what I do with my audio chain for my Korg "volca sample". I put it through my Behringer "sf-300" superfuzz, which has the option to do a clean boost. I switch that in and slam the input gain where it's not quite distorted? But incredibly compressed and upfront!🎹🎧💫😵😎👌

Ken, could you do a video on how you artistically and technically bridge the gap between a studio recorded songs and a live performance of those songs? During the creation of a song, is there any thought about how to perform it live later? Do you have recording/ creation methods in place to bring it out of the studio? do you aim to 100% recreation or artistic variation? Does that matter to you or the audience? My friend owns a studio in Oregon, Fremont Recording, and I'm fairly certain he owns one if those Universal Audio amplifiers. He got really into Reel to Reel tape recording and last time I was there I think I saw one of those. Edit: I think that Vocoder you are talking about is the same one Tobacco uses in Black Moth Super Rainbow. So this all the vocoded effects during Warlock are live? I always assumed it was just a track playing, wow that's cool.
That electrix warpfactory trick is pretty frickin' nifty. Used to see them everywhere for cheap, wonder if there's gonna be an inflation now. haha. While I love DBlue Glitch for distorting/trashing RMX loops (using a variety of the built in freq cuts) I found Turnado works quite well on vocals. Having a small device that could run it would be even better, replacing a laptop/interface. It has a governor that can be adjusted and several effects shifted up/down mapped to a midi CC#.

Ableton Live's vocoder is fantastic for this effect, as it has an inbuilt noise generator and formant control. Layering vocals with it and SoundToys Little Altar Boy makes for some really psychedelic effects. Throw Melodyne in the mix, and Waves Tune controlled by a midi keyboard controller and it goes even FURTHER.

I've got a Warp Factory but I find it to have a bit of static feedback when I use it. It's subtle but not clean for sure. This happens on the vocoder function as well as the others.
Kevin, I’ve heard a lot of other users have had similar issues, noise, etc. I must admit that I’m thoroughly impressed with the sound, and noise floor of all three of my Electrix units! Are you wiring your Warpfactory with balanced input/output? I’ve got my three units connected back to my patchbay, balanced, and normalled from one to another, and they sound really clean 🤟🏼. It’s absolutely possible your unit is acting up, and based on how much I still use my own…I will always recommend having it serviced 😆🙏. Thanks for sharing Kevin, it’s a big deal 🙏 Stay safe! -hw
@@hiwattmarshall Thanks for getting back to me. I have been using all balanced cables. I come out of my interface into the formant. Then run the Left out to my API 512 and back to my DAW. Everything is either TRS XLR or a combination of the two. I use an external keyboard in the source left. I use a TS instrument cable hear. Should I use balanced here instead. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll have it looked at if I can't solve it.
I have no use for these informations, but I watched this whole video, and enjoyed it, because that's so pleasant to listen to/watching you teaching us the TrickS (see what I did there ;D ) of this job !
Does anyone else use that Warp Factory vocoder? I love it's internal oscillator! Though I'm trying to play it over midi chromaticly...but it seems like you would have to custom map each key to the correct midi cc...? If anyone has insight...I would love it.

I am good at pattern recognition. Seems like I heard Peter Murphy/Bauhaus chant or recite something that Ogre just did. Was that some famous line in Klingon or something?
For many years I wondered how all of those delays and stutters were happening live. I'm guessing one of the engineers are controlling that kaoss pad offstage? I know Ogre occasionally had some unit on stage but not on some tours.

It's hand built, all analog preamp, filter, saturation, eq, compressor, distortion, limiter. It's not cheap, but worth every cent. Cheers

For live vocals, I'm very loud, and I'm sending a compressed signal into 4 pitch shifters, then into a distortion unit, then have everything gated pretty hard. (Then into the master reverb bus, like you do) I've heard from live sound guys that gating vocals live to deal with feedback is generally bad practice, because your voice naturally gets quieter as the show progresses. How do you feel about gating in love settings?
I just realized this is literally the first time I've ever watched an audio production video about music I actually like.

LocNess is a brutal and analogish sounding crush box with awesome analogish sounding hi and low shelf filters and you can go into total great sounding distortion too. Black Q is principally an analogish EQ but has tube drive modes and can sound very close to hardware too. I think they are both great. Have fun :)

It’s great to hear about the Furman/UA combo for vocals. Around that same time Al Jorgensen used a dbx 160/H3000 combo for Ministry’s distorted vocals. Different hardware, same principles. Both with great results. Although ohGr was born blessed with an amazing voice and the gear only brings out what’s already incredible. He could easily be a Grammy winning voice over actor for movies and video games.

Really neat video that gave me some insights. I've recorded a couple of songs and am in the early stages of planning how i will do it live (It's EBM, somewhat harsh), and i was thinking i could solve quite a bit of it with a kaoss pad. I figure i can even steer it via midi so it loops when it should loop etc, i just gotta make a preset for my vocals.
This is something I was curious about ever since I first heard Skinny Puppy.
Thanks for sharing that Ken! I was quite impressed with Ogre's vocal sound during the soundcheck in The Hague a couple years back when I was helping out the Databomb set up Cev's rig. Just found a warp factory for cheap and I can't wait to give this a try!

I think one cannot have enough tools and units to bring saturation and distortion to mixes. Lately I'm experimenting - beside the usual suspects like Saturn, Spectre or Subvert - much with stomp pedal and amp and cabinet emulations too. I found very good and authentic non digital sounding plugins from Neural DSP and Mercuriall. I still got the Yamaha SPX-90, which has very nasty distortion programs too. Cheers.

This makes me think about what I do with my audio chain for my Korg "volca sample". I put it through my Behringer "sf-300" superfuzz, which has the option to do a clean boost. I switch that in and slam the input gain where it's not quite distorted? But incredibly compressed and upfront!🎹🎧💫😵😎👌

Ken, could you do a video on how you artistically and technically bridge the gap between a studio recorded songs and a live performance of those songs? During the creation of a song, is there any thought about how to perform it live later? Do you have recording/ creation methods in place to bring it out of the studio? do you aim to 100% recreation or artistic variation? Does that matter to you or the audience?

My friend owns a studio in Oregon, Fremont Recording, and I'm fairly certain he owns one if those Universal Audio amplifiers. He got really into Reel to Reel tape recording and last time I was there I think I saw one of those.

I think that Vocoder you are talking about is the same one Tobacco uses in Black Moth Super Rainbow.
So this all the vocoded effects during Warlock are live? I always assumed it was just a track playing, wow that's cool.
That electrix warpfactory trick is pretty frickin' nifty. Used to see them everywhere for cheap, wonder if there's gonna be an inflation now. haha. While I love DBlue Glitch for distorting/trashing RMX loops (using a variety of the built in freq cuts) I found Turnado works quite well on vocals. Having a small device that could run it would be even better, replacing a laptop/interface. It has a governor that can be adjusted and several effects shifted up/down mapped to a midi CC#.

Ableton Live's vocoder is fantastic for this effect, as it has an inbuilt noise generator and formant control. Layering vocals with it and SoundToys Little Altar Boy makes for some really psychedelic effects. Throw Melodyne in the mix, and Waves Tune controlled by a midi keyboard controller and it goes even FURTHER.

I've got a Warp Factory but I find it to have a bit of static feedback when I use it. It's subtle but not clean for sure. This happens on the vocoder function as well as the others.
Kevin, I’ve heard a lot of other users have had similar issues, noise, etc. I must admit that I’m thoroughly impressed with the sound, and noise floor of all three of my Electrix units! Are you wiring your Warpfactory with balanced input/output? I’ve got my three units connected back to my patchbay, balanced, and normalled from one to another, and they sound really clean 🤟🏼. It’s absolutely possible your unit is acting up, and based on how much I still use my own…I will always recommend having it serviced 😆🙏. Thanks for sharing Kevin, it’s a big deal 🙏

@@hiwattmarshall Thanks for getting back to me. I have been using all balanced cables. I come out of my interface into the formant. Then run the Left out to my API 512 and back to my DAW. Everything is either TRS XLR or a combination of the two. I use an external keyboard in the source left. I use a TS instrument cable hear. Should I use balanced here instead. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll have it looked at if I can't solve it.

For live vocals, I'm very loud, and I'm sending a compressed signal into 4 pitch shifters, then into a distortion unit, then have everything gated pretty hard. (Then into the master reverb bus, like you do)
I've heard from live sound guys that gating vocals live to deal with feedback is generally bad practice, because your voice naturally gets quieter as the show progresses.
How do you feel about gating in love settings?
Pretty sure Ogre is summoning something around the 7 min mark...
Which mic pre were you using before these Fuman abs UA? Was it just a pre on the board or something else?
Are you using an ESD armband? Or is it the mic cord? =)
