As it is the Halloween season, I dusted off my copy of Dmitri's Songs and Dances of Death. It nearly knocked me to the floor, it was so powerful. I actually saw Hvorostovsky early in his career, 1993 in Recital at SF Davies Symphony Hall. Unforgettable, and the audience went wild! Those 4 Mussorgsky songs must be the most intense of the entire 19th Century- and no better interpreter exists than Dmitri. One thing, though: "Greatest Baritone of This Era"-by "This Era" did you mean starting in Genesis and continuing on through the unknown future?
Hvorostovsky and Sam Ramey in "Suona la Tromba Intrepido" is one of the most beautiful duets here in YT and my favest one! Two wonderful voices! Bravissimi!

In 1996 he released a CD "Credo" with the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir. In the introductory note, Dmitri said "I believe...in the power of the Russian sacred music to transport the spirit, to open our eyes to the mystery of faith and to teach us, as Dostoevsky believed, that 'beauty will save the world."-Dmitri Hvorostovsky
Even these fragments can verify Hvorostovsky's greatness! And the video also shows Pavarotti's greatness and love of music foremost and over everything else, in that he invited young (prince) Dmitri to sing with him, the world star, - and there it became obvious that now the young man was the reigning King! Sorry, if it offends someone, as no offense is intended, just stating what my ears tell me: there is so much more in Dmitri's voice, he has everything to make music that is really alive and beautiful! An interesting video for sure!
Sad that Pavarotti could only be great in the Italian language. International stars challenge themselves in all forms of opera. Dima was and remains THE world star.
