      I like this idea. It implies that no matter how far Dooku might've fallen, destroying someone who Qui-Gon cherished was a bridge too far. Maybe Dooku still hadn’t let go of the idea of flipping Kenobi to his side for a 2 on 1 against Palpatine. He has that apprentice of my apprentice thing going on. In Attack of the Clones he went for wounding strikes on Kenobi, instead of a kill shot. Of course, if I were Dooku, I would have immediately pointed at Palps and shouted ‘He’s the Sith Lord’ and set up a 3 v 1. The rule of two doesn’t say anything about using Jedi to kill your Master!

  • @anthony7697
    @anthony7697 Месяц назад +67

    Actually - it makes sense - sure he rag dolled him, but there's no assurance how long he stays down and wants to keep it a one on one fight - using the catwalk to try and pin him would at minimum buy him time, if not keep him pinned or injure him so he can't fight. However despite an animation error where Kenobi is clipped in to the cat walk - those struts are an important detail. They are what actually keeps the weight from slamming on to his legs and pulverizing him, only moving him as it slides along the floor and then pushes against him (where the clipping issue occurs) but the direction the force would be applied and general lack of resistance would mean he's sore, maybe bruised, but nothing that adrenaline couldn't basically shake off.
    I can see what he's going for - it just didn't translate as well in film, more so with age.

    If you look under the walkway there are transversal beams on each side of the section falling on Obi-Wan. It's those beams that make contact with the ground, not the walkway itself, creating a gap between the two. That's why Kenobi is safe and fine, the walkway didn't fall on him, it's just a bit hard to tell because the CGI blends perspectives.

    1:14, Scenes like this kind of demonstrate that Star Wars characters are all mostly treated like superhumans (or in this case, the technical term would be “peak humans”) even when they don’t have Force powers or aren’t using them to augment their attributes.
    After all, it’s not just Kenobi having the durability and endurance to withstand this platform crushing against his body, but it’s also “normal” people demonstrating extraordinary attributes without being Force-sensitives, like the reflexes and dexterity Han displays with his shooting and piloting skills.
    In the real world, Dooku pinning that platform against Obi-Wan would’ve been to injure him, but here, it appears more intended to be Dooku, who is overwhelmed by being attacked by two opponents, frustratedly pinning down the “weaker” Force-sensitive using the advantage of his superior power and skill at using it, thinking he would be able to have an easier time handling Anakin, only for Anakin to overwhelm him by being stronger duelist (as in literally stronger).

    • @dearcastiel4667
      @dearcastiel4667 Месяц назад +1

      No, if you take the time to look you can see transversal beams under the catwalk and it's those beams that make contact with the ground. So Obi-Wan didn't get the catwalk on him, there was a space between it and the ground. Then when it started to slide it just pushed him a bit.

    The platform is not out of position before Dooku pushes it down, it extends outward from the wall and the rest of the surrounding catwalk. You can see the 90-degree curve. The camera angle makes it look like it's pointing down a bit, but it's merely extending *outwards.*
    But yes, this was always an odd moment, Dooku trying to pin Kenobi. I suspect it was never part of the original scene. Dooku probably just tossed Kenobi, he bounced off the railing or platform or maybe even the wall, but at some point later, Lucas was like, "Hmm, let's add a bit where Dooku Force-drops a platform on him. That'll be interesting." Because if you look at when Anakin rolls him over, it seems like the platform isn't there on set with the actors and they're not really acting with it. And yes, later on Obi-Wan isn't even so much as limping or rubbing his leg, because that bit was added after the actors shot the scene.

    and with the metal support, if you see the luke lifting xwing fromnthe swamp or yoda and dooku force lift a giant pillar/shaft at the ending of eps 2, then dooku actually can easily move the metal platform without the help of the strut

    Dooku incapacitated Obi-Wan because he along with Anakin would be able to defeat him fast, they were VERY good at fighting together, so he had to use everything he had to get rid of one of them, he thought Obi-Wan was the most powerful so he chose him, but he was wrong of course. (This is from the novel, which is based on the script of the movie, so probably also what happens in the movie, but the novel is way better at everything specially dialogue)

    But it does make sense. Dooku is obviously trying to kill him by dropping the walkway on top of him.
    But the walkway just so happened to be shaped in such a way where it didn't crush him.
    If Dooku just knocked him out, it wouldn't make any sense if he just left him there without attempting to kill him.
    You could say that Dooku could've killed Obi-Wan with his saber which is true, but then that would destroy the story George was trying to tell.

  • @dreadrath

    Yeah, from a logical standpoint that should've crushed Obi-Wan. The only way it couldn't have is if Dooku dropped it in a way as to only trap him there non-lethally, which would be hard to do given the weight of the walkway. From a story standpoint, weird as it sounds I think that was Dooku's way of not killing Obi-Wan. Sidious pretty much ordered him to eliminate Kenobi to push Anakin to the dark side. but Dooku always wanted to convert Obi-Wan instead of Anakin, though I'm not sure Dooku would defy Sidious like that even with his sentimental streak for Qui-Gon's old apprentice. Regardless, I do agree that that was a silly way to go about it, I mean jedi are durable, but when all's said and done they're still squishy meatbags.

    The whole point of this fight was to test Anakin and see if he was ready to take Dooku's place. For that to happen, Obi-Wan had to die or be in severe danger of death, so that Anakin would get mad and use his anger as energy. That's the explanation given in the book. Dooku is smart; he wouldn't have stopped right in the middle of a fight to do that unless he wanted Anakin to respond a certain way.

    He did so to explicitly show that the Force runs through its wielders even when they are unconscious. That walkway weighed several tons PLUS the weight of the Dark side. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to very meticulously show the metal pressing in on Obi'wan's thigh, but UNABLE to crush all the way through.
    It's kind of like how they inserted a sound effect into the first movie every time someone uses the Force; it's there to give the audience a subtle clue that something magical is happenning. That's why you can hear that sound being played as Luke's tauntaun is choking to death in the cold: Obi'wan killed the tauntaun so Luke could live.

    Nevermind the fact that this entire room didn’t need to exist. It’s not a bridge. And it’s at the top of a long tower for some unknown reason. It’s just a vague parallel to the thrown room in ROTJ but that was built specifically for the emperor. It’s nonsensical to have a tower thrown room on a battleship for a political figure that you aren’t governed by

  • @halllow

    I read the novelization last month and this was one of the things I remembered and wanted to see how it was originally planned. In the book Dooku drop kicks obi-wan so hard he goes head first into the floor like a missile -dents the ground- and is just knocked out the rest of the time. There’s a part where debris or a table get tossed around and Anakin has to protect him, but mostly the kick does the job. When anakin finds him he just finds a bloody spot and concussion.
    Esoteric reference but the description of the kick is pretty brutal and the only comparison I could think of is Jet Li’s final kick at the end of Romeo Must Die. It’s partially shown in that movie’s trailer: both character’s do a long jump kick at each other but in the air Li uses his left foot to kick the other guy’s leg down, swinging the guy’s momentum downward, then with his right leg does a stomp on the top of the guy’s head with enough force to crack his neck.
