As someone that played a lot of Pre Big bang and until now , Dark Knight for GMS is huge for us : - Back then when I was a bishop main , when I train on himes or galloperras or Skeles , I always train with a friend who was a Drk. Most of my friends back then were Dark Knights , which is funny so I can train whenever one of them was online. - Not only that , they were needed for boss runs since Hyper Body is needed for you not to get one shot or lose your life on a stupid way. Before we have "life counts" , back then you only have "1 life" and bishop will only revive the DPS - We transition this into the "Big bang era" , and Dark Knights got the aesthetics change as like if you were 120 , your aura was red and when you were 150 it change to purple. At that moment Dark Knights still have dragon theme - Then Dark Knights got buffed with "Dark Impale" during the Jump patch and while they were not a power house , they were a very solid class - Later on Dark knight will lose all its "dragon theme" and get replace with "berserker theme" as like a class that "has to tank or take damage" and that can endure a lot. This was reinforced with " final Pact" that gives you cooldown , and they give the "beholder" its own theme and gimmick. - Dark knights at that time on 2014-2015 were one of the most solid class of the game because of the skill "Cross Surge" , and the skill sacrifice was used for you to be able to spam gungnir , so buff duration and more was needed to keep its up time + having a longer pact - Then on the Destiny Patch , Dark Knights was one of the winners since pact became a toggle and you can choose the duration of final pact. Not only that , gungnir could be now spam , it improved upon their 5th job , and it became this "middle ground class" that can deal solid damage and have good survival - Here on GMS , our first lvl 200 was a Dark Knight and it actually inspired many people to pick up the class. Even on 2024 , many people pick it up because of FangBlade or because they like how the class is.
Your videos legit make me cry. I was only a child playing maple, and this game made me the person I am today basically. “In a world when minmaxing wasn’t the entire point of the game, and the only goal was to have fun” ugh… I felt that. I never made it past lvl 70 because I’d always want to create and play new classes. Thanks for the great nostalgic video!
I'm like 99% sure slash blast hit all targets not just 6 in the old days. Somewhere along the line they nerfed it to just 6 targets. It's why all of the hackers were warriors. I know this because I am actually that old and played back then. No warrior maxed Final attack either seeing as it would actually cause a forced animation preventing you from doing anything and slowing your next skill attack. The only warrior that would consider Final attack was a crusader because he was single target anyways and I believe it helped build combo points I think? A to be Crusader would save all of his final attack points till he hit 70 before dumping into it. As for helmets most warriors used dex bamboo hats and tried to scroll the cheap 10% scrolls often obtained from KPQ to apply +accuracy to the helmets. A lucky young warrior could end up with a dex bamboo hat with like +10 accuracy. Between this accuracy scrolling bamboo hat and a blue chainmail scrolled for dex/accuracy warrior would carry around an attack glove and a dex accuracy glove depending on what they want to fight. Sniper pills too.
As someone who played as Dragon Knight, Buster was so iconic same with Roar. When the job was trashed I jumped around from classes to classes but yea it never had the appeal of Dragon Knight, eventually dropped the game. Came back and made an Aran and managed to reach lvl 200 and played for a while but as time went by and life happens I stopped Maplestory again. Now I've return on reboot and noticed Angelic Buster became the Dragon Knight successor with Buster now becoming Trinity and it was so satisfying seeing the 3 Dragon heads coming out again.
You forgot to mention an important context of SP and AP scrolls costing real money. This is the sole reason why it's important to go low/no dex and hybrid build so you don't brick your F2P character and have to start all over again. Games nowadays have free reset or costing in-game currency so the weight of choices is vastly different back in the day. Anyway, GJ on covering the stabbing and swinging mechanic. IMO it's the most interesting thing about Drk.
v.13 player reporting in. I feel ancient, but God do I miss those days. Thanks for your work on these videos, they really take me back to a time that I can only remember in scattered fragments.

before I start watching I just want to say these videos are a complete joy to watch. takes me RIGHT back to 2004. I know these videos must take an incredibly long time to research, record and edit. Thank you so much!!! MapleClassic please!!!!!
one thing i noticed you didn't directlymention, which is so silly to think about nowadays but was so MASSIVE back then, was just how freaking HUGE the dragon knight attack range was. Fury had more range than some first and second job magician skills, it was insane. and helped so much in the training. dragon/dark knights were weirdly one of the more complicated classes skill-build wise. some people even recommended going 1 point in spear fury because it had longer range than crusher and a faster animation, so it was useful in certain scenarios to aggro monsters further away into your crusher range. the Dex thing was also very interesting, as mentioned we never really needed it, only the byproduct of accuracy it could grant, so your level of funding determined how much base dex you'd have since you wouldn't be able to afford all the accuracy scrolls and whatnot... but then post big bang we got 130 and 140 gear which demanded dex since they had the absolute best in slot weapons, and in such quantities that most people actually started adding dex, until a certain method was discovered to allow you to "cheat" the dex. man, seeing good ol' chickenpoodl videos again almost brought a tear to my eye. one of the truly great OG's along with others like Daniel3B, the original holder of the basilmarket spearman guide who helped cement the hybrid build as THE right choice. all in all, so much nostalgia for a simpler time. honestly, thank you very much for this video. you have no idea how happy it makes me to revisit all this.
Just finished watching the Bishop and Night Lord videos the other day and was itching for more. Can't wipe the smile off my face and I haven't even watched the video yet. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into researching and editing these videos.
Final attack increasing DPS for spearmen is debatable; because of the quirk spears and polearms have with animations, and the unequal distribution of animations can result in a DPS loss with one of the two weapon types. I can't recall which of the two weapon types it was though.
Final Attack was a DPS decrease when using Slash Blast, and a DPS increase when using power strike on all warrior weapons. It was terrible for Spearmen though as your 3rd job skills could not proc Final Attack, making the skill a complete waste of SP past level 70. The difference between stabbing and chopping did not matter for Final Attack. It did however matter for your 3rd job skills. Dragon Knights got a mobbing skill that was always a chop and a bossing skill that was always a stab. A pole arm Dragon Knight would do less DPS to bosses because pole arms were worse at stabbing than spears.
Maaaaaan, this series is so rad, I miss the glory days of being 12 and having no clue about any of the major dynamics of each class and just picking what was cool. Id LOVE a retrospective on the pirate class, because even though it was a late addition, it was the first major class added to the game and I think represents when it started to shift from OSMS into the Big Bang era. Corsairs and Buccs were so different from anything else, but not necessarily better - mechanically OR technically.

These videos are masterfully done. I played back when they were first going to add Pirates and haven’t played Maple since Phantom came out, so seeing MS in this style again hits home. Thank you for these videos!
I haven't had anything to do with maplestory in a very long time. The only part of maple that did persist was the music, as I'm often using some of the music in the background at work, while the kids are doing some individual projects or some quiet time. Thanks for the the spotlight that period of time, especially on a class that many of us held dearly. The use of some of my clips also legitimately brought a smile to me. I'm not sure what OSMS is, but thanks for making this video, nonetheless. ✌
Great quality video as always! Dark Knight has been my main ever since I played Maple way back in the days. I love the class! I like their long range melee attacks compared to sword and blunt weapon as well as being able to wield both spear and polearm. I wish we got to keep the Dragon Knight theme in 3rd job. I remember Drk was on the top spots in DPS chart with the use of Sacrifice and Berserk.
I should be working. But instead I'm watching an hour long deep dive into a class in Maplestory, a game I played for maybe a month 20 years ago. Keep it up Togain! Keep giving me an excuse not to file the other 43 forms I need to file today.
these videos are impeccably researched and professionally crafted. great, great stuff. easily the most comprehensive, high-quality maplestory content on the platform.
Hell yeah, amazing work as usual. You're really shaping up to be the GOAT of MapleStory content creation and I'm here for it. I even started playing an OSMS private server because of you and have been loving it. Where do we go from here though? At this point I'm anticipating a full breakdown of the big bang update, maybe a look at the history of power creep in MS?
imo the Lv80 warrior gear is some of the most memorable and good looking items in Maplestory's entire history and I never even mained the classes. Similar to Ludi's theming it just has a certain charm that almost no other game had managed to achieve.
I had many Dragon/Dark Knight friends back in the day and honestly I've always despised that the class was so much better and over played back then. The amount of times I would finally find a bossing or training party and hear the dreaded "Kick the Paladin" because a Dark Knight showed up hurt... and I heard it often. That said, this was a VERY impressive analysis of the class at that period of time. Incredible work as always.
"Given the opportunity, I would play dark knight over any other class in OSMS." Well my friend, I think you may have just solidified which class I'm going to play when maplelands comes to NA
Lol I remember being like 6-7 years old when I played maplestory back in 06. I went a full strength warrior and couldn't hit the green mushrooms right outside of henesys LMAO.
Thinking of now-defunct stats like accuracy, can you make a video on the Hands stat? I can't find an old screenshot of the old character stat window with it. *I'm not crazy! It existed!*
I remember people theorizing what it did but iirc it never actually had any functionality and just displayed a factor of dex and a few other stats lmao
great video and i always look forward to your next.. in spearman 2nd job build i actually like to only put ~12 points in the spear/pole boosters and dump rest into iron will.. increasing the boosters just increases buff duration.. but thats me min maxing trying to save more meso.. reason i do this is because realistically in 3rd job you're going to be rebuffing with your party every 120 seconds because everyone needs holy symbol rebuff from priest.. and as a dk you're going to be wanting priests lol.. i personally don't have an issue with rebuffing boosters every 120 sec as well
I am so happy these are coming out as frequently as they are. Do you think we'll ever get into classes beyond the "explorers" and how they impacted the game, either good or bad? I played that era as a kid and I'd love to know what was actually going on lol.
Bro the FlyFF Music is Nostalgic AS FUCK as well. Such a great Era for MMO's! Makes me warm and fuzzy inside thinking about the past simpler times before the world was crazy af, and also a bit sad too because those times can never come back or be replicated. The worst part of growing up is not being able to find stuff you used to enjoy, enjoyable anymore because of how much more complex your brain is and how much more input you need in order to be entertained because of how overstimulated we are now a days. Such is life I guess though :/ Much peace and love to you brotha
Playing JMS. I last played the patch where allowed to double mount a skill and doubled what we actually did. And oh my god was a NL with booster was so good
I would love a video like these on Paladins or Bandits or lesser used range classes. I feel like I never really knew what they were about and still dont cuz they were less popular and uncovvered back then
Dit was really popular for a while if you were funded since Meso Explosion was the fastest clear you could get but until LHC and the associated buffs Paladins were considered garbage that were only useful for mid-funded party grinding in specific maps
I stumbled upon your videos. I used to play MapleStory waaaaay back in the day and you made me nostalgic af for it, to the point where I even downloaded it again and tried to play again. But Nexon won't let me verify my account, it just keeps giving me an error. Damn shame.
small suggestion: you might wanna find some good standardized enemies you can do DPS calcs on for gear comparison. it would really help demonstrate the impact of things like accuracy and attack speed. i'm not an MS player though, so I'm not sure how feasible that would be.
dps calc was added muuuch after big bang and I don't think any private servers ported the functionality (the vanilla code would be incompatible anyway lmao) also mob locations, spawn ticks, and character control factored SO MUCH into DPS it'd be very hard to make it consistent anyway, closest thing would probably be goby houses (which would only reveal single target efficiency)
42:46 knowing that polearms become the best late in 4th job, is there any reason to commit to the hybrid build knowing that information now? For example in an old school server that already includes the surfboards and himes why even both ever using a spear
Back in the early days of the full release, my first "online boyfriend" in maple was a DK. I was a Cleric when we met, and I've always wondered if that was the reason he first was interested in me 🤔 lmao
WAKE UP EVERYONE, NEW TOGAIN VIDEO JUST DROPPED
IM AWAKE IM AWAKE IM AWAKE!
I have to stop consuming nostalgic maplestory content.. the urge to play is getting stronger, but I know it’s a trap. Great video, as always.
You'll play for a couple weeks then realize that this game is a relic of the past, even with improved rates
come join MapleLegends its a classic server of maple before the big bang update

- Dark knights at that time on 2014-2015 were one of the most solid class of the game because of the skill "Cross Surge" , and the skill sacrifice was used for you to be able to spam gungnir , so buff duration and more was needed to keep its up time + having a longer pact
- Then on the Destiny Patch , Dark Knights was one of the winners since pact became a toggle and you can choose the duration of final pact. great video and i always look forward to your next.. in spearman 2nd job build i actually like to only put ~12 points in the spear/pole boosters and dump rest into iron will.. increasing the boosters just increases buff duration.. but thats me min maxing trying to save more meso.. reason i do this is because realistically in 3rd job you're going to be rebuffing with your party every 120 seconds because everyone needs holy symbol rebuff from priest.. and as a dk you're going to be wanting priests lol.. i personally don't have an issue with rebuffing boosters every 120 sec as well
We do not deserve the amount of effort that this man puts into these long form vids. Kudos once again Togain
Another banger dude. Subbing for more, your quality is top notch.
I can't wait for the video on the best most popular classes, white knight and sniper!
Love your series about old MS. Keep up the good work
The only class i got to 70 before BB... got to 70 - 100 in a day after BB was released. Been loving these videos so much amazing stuff!!!
Its insane how good of a videos you make, Thank you so much!
love learning about oldschool maplestory through you
Ahhh MAN. SUCH A THROW BACK. I miss it so much!
Another excellent video, you're one of the best RUclipsrs that I've discovered this year :)
I am so happy these are coming out as frequently as they are.
Do you think we'll ever get into classes beyond the "explorers" and how they impacted the game, either good or bad? I played that era as a kid and I'd love to know what was actually going on lol.
dude seriously how do you pump out such high quality content so quickly
bro the dice for the stats... what an era... not much to say, this is hella nostalgic.
As a Bera player I remember being so proud of our boy Fangblade lol Good times man
A Togain video a day keeps my brain happy at work all day
I hate Nexon for what they have done to Dragon Knights...
I was chasing Korwyn's spot as Broa's top DrK for a bit, what a time to be alive
Thank you for the amazing video! Keep going!
Another absolute banger long-form video injecting nostalgia straight into my bloodstream
Looking forward to your pirate guide next!
Love the videos, Great work.
Could you ever do a video and on the lore and story of Maplestory?
I stumbled upon your videos. I used to play MapleStory waaaaay back in the day and you made me nostalgic af for it, to the point where I even downloaded it again and tried to play again. But Nexon won't let me verify my account, it just keeps giving me an error. Damn shame.
Blessed. Togain continually giving us the content we need
The last time I got this excited for a new maplestory series was a Dray86 vid
I remember making an only dex warrior for shits and giggles. Got to level 40 before giving up. Was so funny hitting low but dodging tons of attacks
Here waiting for MapleWorlds Global. Thanks for the video and the memories. :)
My day gets better when togain uploads
We grabbing popcorn with this one 👌
Always a joy when you upload
Thank you again man, great video
Rush also had a very small i-frame when pushing a mob 🤓☝
i remember some haunted house leech that only a few classes could reliably do because of s
I MISSED OLD MS, I WAS ONE OF THE OG DK MAIN. Back then dragon roar was one of the coolest AOE 😢
I've never played Maplestory, but I do enjoy these videos.
small suggestion: you might wanna find some good standardized enemies you can do DPS calcs on for gear comparison. it would really help demonstrate the impact of things like accuracy and attack speed. i'm not an MS player though, so I'm not sure how feasible that would be.
dps calc was added muuuch after big bang and I don't think any private servers ported the functionality (the vanilla code would be incompatible anyway lmao)
also mob locations, spawn ticks, and character control factored SO MUCH into DPS it'd be very hard to make it consistent anyway, closest thing would probably be goby houses (which would only reveal single target efficiency)
Another amazing video!!
>Dork knights' turn finally
MOM, GET THE CAMERA.
i been waiting on this video. thank you!
I've been waiting for this one, let's go!!!!!!! Thanks Togain
42:46 knowing that polearms become the best late in 4th job, is there any reason to commit to the hybrid build knowing that information now? For example in an old school server that already includes the surfboards and himes why even both ever using a spear
It's always a good day when i catch your uploads!
Togain quickly became everyone's favorite maple story youtuber
man i miss OSMS
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO I'M SPENDING THE ENTIRE DAY WATCHING
Back in the early days of the full release, my first "online boyfriend" in maple was a DK. I was a Cleric when we met, and I've always wondered if that was the reason he first was interested in me 🤔 lmao
