J Brigan you hit the nail on the head. We’re all on a budget. I see some you tube channels that are really more of a commercial for companies then an honest opinion. Pocket folders for 400 plus dollars, really ? Fixed blades 300-400 dollars. I have two gerber strong arms, one on my plate carrier and the other on my battle belt. My bag and my sons bags carry the cold steel SRK.
I’d like to see any of those 300 dollar knifes do something better then the gerber or cold steel SRK.

I bight a Morakniv Companion. Sheath isn't the best but works. Did meal prep for an entire week, didn't need to sharpen. Cut thru some cardboard for no reason. Still made even cuts thru paper. Pretty impessive for less than $20. I'll confess I did not attempt to baton it. You could buy 3 for the price of most others tho.

What was the name of the Gerber that looks exactly like the Strongarm? Well not exactly but almost exactly. Was it the Prodigy? But anyway you can find that knife under $50 if you can find somewhere that has them still. I know BladeHQ had some about a month ago. They are almost the same exact knife. The Strongarm is better but the other one will work.

Gerber did come back strong with this model, thanks god! it was about time, i was missing my 80's Gerber quality knives, this knife is light, extremely durable, the blade keep the edge well, made in u.s.a. and yes the sheath is fantastic, this knife is a beast, thank you Gerber to finally give us something worth this legendary Brand.

I have been looking for a couple of good belt knives and discovered your video and im only at 2:08 of the video and I paused it because when you said that you love to explore the outdoors with your family and friends and let your followers go along with you on these explorations stopped me in my tracks.t I know first hand just how precious it is to just be able to do things that people take for granted every second of every day. Why I say that is because approximately 4 years ago I was a completely different person who was struggling with issues that was caused by 2 carpel tunnel surgeries and the outcome of those surgeries changed my life. Not to get into the details of the situation lets just say about 6 months of my life was taken from me and my family. I know now how important it is just to be able to walk around with my family and friends and just absorb mother nature and everything freedom has to offer. When that is taken from you it makes everything that you were used to doing and seeing unbelievably important! Thanks for your videos and the content that you've offered. Scott.

Thank you for this great review. The Mora Black has been my go-to for some years, now. Love the sharpening stone and fire steel. However, while I wasn't paying attention, I GOT OLD ! So, looking to simplify. That Gerber you showed will be my next go-to. Too old to dance, too fat to fly and use a firearm for self-defense now , at the age of 70.

Excellent video! Good knives, all around. I was a grunt from 1989 to 1993. There were several items probably 90% of my Marines carried daily. A lighter (usually Bic), the original Casio G Shock watch with Suunto watchband compass, and a K-Bar knife. I believe the knife was against regulations while in garrison (pocket-clip knives not around, yet). They would usually cut two slits in the sheath body to make the rig ride higher on the belt and be inconspicuous. I did this as well. A genuine K-Bar was, IIRC, $43-45 at the MCX. What a great time!!!

I've got the 42D with aftermarket scales from LMF Knives... freakin love it, but it does bring the total cost up to about $80.
There is a VERY slight recurve on the 42D... you'll notice it if you sharpen on flat stones (I use a Work Sharp Guided Sharpening System).

  • @bgriffin4712

Wow thank you Aaron. I'm really sorry all the damage of the broken leg and messed up ankle as I was going into a divorce and custody battle that started in 2016, kept me from seeing this till just now. I had to focus on my daughter in order to get custody and start fixing the mess her life was becoming. That all wrapped up back in April and the leg is mostly healed now. Thank you for your compliments on the 42 and 42D. The 42 came from my having grown up in the everglades and having taught survival skills in the glades, even when exhausted after work back in the late 80s. It is when you are exhausted and working with organic materials in a primitive living scenario in the subtropics, working with hard materials like bamboo with it's high silica content that the mechanical advantages of the re-curve really shine, but they can also be applied elsewhere. Do to where the concept was born, I'd love to have one in a good stainless for myself. Ironically I have been carrying a Strong Arm to study the carry system for a new knife design I am working on for myself. I like scout carry. I haven't really been hard on the Strong Arm yet, but I'm liking it so far. I like Buck's 420HC. In my first survival lessons that were taught to me in south Florida by my Marine father, I carried a Buck 119 for the corrosion resistance in a Ka-Bar shaped blade. So, the Strong Arm is a lot like Gerber giving me a Buck I like better these days with a less fragile tip. LOL, after almost twenty years working for companies like RMJ Tactical and TOPS knives doing field R&D and product development for them, I am so over black blades, handles, and sheaths now, and I have the Coyote version. I wouldn't mind if the blade weren't coated. Not like it needs to be with this steel. But I digress. I just wanted to stop in and say thank you. I really appreciate what you do and I really appreciate your support of my work and what I am trying to do with it. Having spent so much time in the deep south where the was no economy in the 70s and seeing so many of my family and friends struggle financially in the military and on our local police force, that's where my heart lies. While I do like a few hand made knives that get pricey, mostly I carry production knives in my hard use experiments and few give me the blade shape and especially the ergos I want, which is where the SCHF42 Raven came in. If you want to see it through my eyes, I wrote that up last year on Blade Forums, and here is a link to it.

I realize this video is almost 3 years old, but here in 2019 the Strongarm is around $70 for the non serrated version. I do not see it as such a great value by today's prices. For $70 the competition becomes a lot more fierce for the Strongarm with its 420 hcs. I realize it is well done for what it is, and I appreciate that it is American, but I don't love it for $70...Maybe $40-$50, but not $70. Give me 1095 steel!

I use both the Gerber Strongarm and the Mora. I have the same opinions on both. The Strongarm is my belt knife on my bushcraft/hiking belt. The Mora is actually used for cooking/slicing out of my pack. I don’t need a big chopper because I use a ColdSteel hatchet for big work. If I know that I need more than that, I’ll be in the Jeep with an electric chain saw. Options for specific applications.

Say Heah Aaron, last one (post) recently I'm finding out curv
es slice better (cut). I made a mismatch set, I teamed up my Recon Tanti with my Seal Pup Elite and added my Estwing Double Bit Hatchet and of course my Bacho Laplander and for my neck knife the BK-14 with Slabs that add another demention to the knife and if the best survival knife is the one that's on you at the time, I'll have two. Anyhow, The slicing, lite batoning and most camp chores, I use my Recon Tango because it's my on person carry, That Curved belly works great in the bush and yet it's considered a Tactical Knife, But Everytime I would use this set or pick and choose out of this set was for bush craft. The Seal Pup Elite which I attach to my pack or Haversack, for my finer work I used my Seal Pup Elite for better control up close. Then the knife that prolly is used tge mist because it's right there, My BK-14 is pretty good on its own, using it as my neck knife I find it better than even my Black Rhino Folder which is one of my Fav. Folder for the bush. Then ofcourse the Double Bit Hatchet has two benefits and we all know about the Laplander. The point is, I can pick and choose out of this set, So I don't have to take all of them out at one time, But I could especially on longer stays, The best part it didn't cost ne a arm and a leg, and the Quality is such that with minimum care it will outlast me. I made this set as a beater set but It's turning out being a pretty good bush craft set from Tactical Knives, And I learned how good curves are, William Collins taught me that.

For people who are not into knives that want something that is affordable, you don't have to worry about maintenance or what not, and can tackle just about any task from combat/survival applications and don 't wanna have to worry about modding it to get it to do what you want like a 90 degree spine, decent sheath ect just buy a Gerber Strongarm. It is quite honestly a killer knife and the heat treat Gerber uses on their 420HC is spot on.
I've seen so many destruction test on this, and have used my own and abused it harshly and it took no damage and cleaned up like a new knife. I've seen other channels outside of the Gauntlet series where a guy called " "The Mayor" was stabbing it through steel boxes, smashing bricks with it, standing on it after hammering the tip into wood ect, I mean terrible, terrible abuse and the knife held up like a champ. It has out performed much more expensive knifes with more expensive steels.
And the carry options are ridiculous. You can strap this knife anywhere from a vest to a backpack to your belt both as a dangler carry or scout style. Gerber has done a ton of things wrong over the past ten years, but when they made this knife they did everything right. And most of all for 50 bucks you cannot beat this thing with Negan's Lucille.

Love the vids, great production, great topics. If you haven't done one yet, I would love to see the same topic under $20.... I know it's not an easy task, but that's why I'm asking for it. I want a good fixed blade that I can buy in quantity to disperse in different places, one for the truck, one in the BOB, on in the wife's car, one to throw in a cache...etc. ,but I don't want to give up any more quality than is necessary.

The Strongarm is a great blade. I got the black one for $39,99 at Walmart. I would've preferred 1095, though the 420 SS on this knife already behaves like 1095, but won't rust. Definitely one of my favorite knives.

if you like to get your knives sharp and have the edge last, i would stay away from gerber and their 420hc in the mid 50's hrc like the plague. if you want a blunt pry bar of a knife that wont rust, i guess its an ok option.
i cant believe anyone would compair 420hc from gerber favorably to 1095. i guess everyones standards are different.

Great review, great choices, too. One thing I'd mention is that you're mistaken about the Steel Will being the only Stainless. The Gerber, in 420HC is also stainless. Gerber's website says it's 420HC, rather than saying 420HC like it does on the LMF, but they're both stainless. 420HC is one of the best low cost stainless steels, not quite as good as 12C27, but a lot better than any of the 440 series.

Nice Review. I kinda have a soft spot for cool knives. I ran upon the Strongarm just a couple of days ago. Started looking at reviews and pretty much everyone raved about this knife. I think there was one guy that thought it was junk. There is always one sour apple in the bunch. anyway... I currently own the SOG Seal pup and it has proven to be a very good knife for camping and household chores. The Strongarm looks amazing!! Love the look of it and love versatility of the holster. I quickly ordered one and is projected to here tomorrow 6-15-2017. I can't wait!! I'm thinking of pairing it up with my Stag Arms AR15 in my gun case. Or behind my bench seat in my truck.

The 420 HC for the Strong Arm is a stainless steel. You have two stainless knives in the mix. It can be an awesome steel done right. The Mora Companion at $14 is a great knife. Get the older blade style. I just put a loop of shock cord around the handle to hold it in. Cheap fix that works well.

The Strongarm in my new favorite. All my buddies saw mine and bought one too. One question, why put a lillte piece of paracord on the handle. What is that little thing for? I have a piece on that if I untie the middle knot, it will go around my wrist. I also have more cord wrapped around the sheath, that I could tiedown around my leg or to a spear if need be.

Stainless Steel belt knife? Buck 119 for $51.30 and free shipping at Amazon or Walmart. Les Stroud carried one for years and so have I.
Hell, for under $50.00 you can get a Mora Companion HD (plenty tough), the Stainless steel Companion, and the regular carbon Companion for slicing because the blade is thinner. ALL THREE FOR UNDER $50.00. Screw the Bushcraft Black. It cost nearly three times as much and is no better then the Companion HD. My 2 cents.

the buck vanguard is a hidden tang knife with a pretty narrow tang that ends in a small piece of threded rod wedged into a recess in the tang, and held on to the knife by a nut at the pommel. its a modified "traditional" type construction and isnt sutable for really heavy use like batoning. not to mention bucks use of a mediocre 420hc at a medium hardness and a hollow grind. there are many knives at that price point that would outproform it for bushcraft / survival use hands down.

I actually like the quick draw sheath of the Mora Bushcraft Black. I admit its not the strongest thing, but being able to roll the sheath upside down and slip the knife out is very clever. Especially if you somehow find yourself inverted in a tree, gravity will roll it so the handle is always up.

Love my Schrade SCHF42 and 42 D. Should have included the Schrade SCHF55. It's a little big knife capable of doing things I though only a larger knife could do. A really outstanding knife. And would make a great back up to a larger knife. It's light weight and has optional carry options. I don't hit the woods without it and it's my EDC daily carry knife along with several large folders such as CRKT's M16-04Z and M21-04. And sometimes my Benchmade 810 Contego all with 4" blades. All these knives compliment each other. To many knives to mention. I love the L.T.WRIGHT Rogue River I won and my go to chopper is the Schrade SCHF38....A beast of a knife.
