I'll tell ya....I've watched a bunch of Linda Kemp vids on negative painting but you've explained it quicker and more comprehensively in 15 min than a 60 minutes dvd of hers from the library! WOW.

She's a fantastic painter but I know what you mean. I have one of her books and I get lost every time I read in it. She tends to be a bit technical. Works for some I guess.

Thanks for bringing her up. Same for me. I bought her book and video, and obviously admire her work, but also found her very difficult to follow. In fact, I lost interest fairly quickly, but have kept telling myself I’m going to try again some day. I’m sure she has students who are very successful in following her, but I ended up feeling like I was never going to be successful with watercolor. Steve has given me hope!

I'm glad to read this. I thought maybe I'm the only one that had a disability following her. I would try my best to watch the video and do exactly what she did. It never came out right and my paintings SUCKED. They went into my scrap paper pile. Steve's way makes sense and he is easy to follow. I've been a fan now for a couple of years.

I am finally understanding negative painting thanks to this video! Thanks Steve! I am going to have to try it again on a smaller scale. I did a really nice first wash, but totally messed up the rest of it. I haven't been very drawn to negative painting, but perhaps by working smaller I will come to like it better. Will try again with maybe just one or two leaves!

I have watched this twice now and probably will watch it again. I had a little go last week but it was a bit of a disaster. I will try, try again in the future. Thanks for such a detailed demo and explanation as usual. Your final creation was full of life and beautiful colours. Cheers. I agree with Teresa b below, purchasing good quality paper on a budget is difficult, Art supplies really know how to charge. However, it really does make a difference.
