From one Zappa fan to another. It was enjoyable to see two Zappa historians discussing some possible future releases. I would love to hear some of the Bongo Fury period. I remember when Joe gave a shout out to the Vinyl Community during his interview with the CEO of East Main Media Brian Brodeur. That was my introduction to the Zappa Vaultmeister title. He really knows his stuff. I am sure that you both have had some amazing FZ conversations. >< I have a few bands in mind that desperately need a Vault leader to start pumping out some live shows for the longtime collectors/fans. Anyways. Super interview Bill. Now if I did not know that Joe was already in charge of the Zappa vaults. I would have definitely voted for you to take on the title~
Rob/Boston
Thank you both! I just found this. Joe has been an amazing steward of the Zappa Vault and I'm forever grateful for what has been released and what's to come! FZ makes the soundtrack that has made my life better! More poetry please!
Thanks Bill!
Thanks Joe!
I saw Joe's beaming smile when asked about '72 :) My wish will be fulfilled ever since, yes! Joe's Domage and Wazoo came out FIFTEEN Years Ago. Time flies, but thank you.
Holy shit!! You’re my hero Bill!! Thank you!! This is awesome. What an honor to interview the Vaultmeister, another hero!
What a spectacular visit with two of my favorite people in the Zappa Universe! When Bill was in retail, he kept me supplied with Zappa releases, and now Joe keeps that supply coming with brilliant releases from the vault and with performances with the Zappa Band. Thank you both! I can’t wait until you speak again. It would be wonderful if you could do this once or twice a year!
Bill, I couldn’t think of any questions before the interview, but know I’m wondering if there will be any more city/region/country themed releases. Wondering how many of the shows we saw over the years in Cleveland were recorded, including the show in the round at the Front Row Theater. Frank seemed put off at first by the rotating stage, but as the night went on he got used to it and even seemed humored by it. It ended up being one of my favorite Zappa shows ever!
See you at The Baked Potato Joe!!
The Läther release(s) and Wazoo, Waka Jawaka era are super exciting over here. Great show, really 👍 thanks
Thanks both of you for doing this!
Now I have a few questions from Mr. Travis. Maybe next time. :)
Bill, this is an award winning interview! You asked so many amazing questions! Lots of magic. That’s an interview to watch and listen to multiple times! Thank you for this and thank you Joe!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Bill, great vid’.
Keep up the great work Vaultmeister! Here’s to the next 29 years.
I stumbled over this recently... thanks for doing that entertaining video interview, you re doing so well for Zappa fans, thumbs up - i cannot wait for experiencing the maybe someday coming Joe's Garage stuff in some undefined future... maybe around 2029 or so???
I would have loved to ask the vaultmeister if there is a Bobby Brown version sung in german in the vault. There goes the story on the net that Frank brought along such a version (on cassette?) to a bavarian radio station some 40 + years ago to airplay on german radio making fun of the fact that the song was a huge hit in this country without people understanding what the meaning of the song really was... the story says furtheron that it was just aired a fiew seconds until the radio jockey became aware of it because it was too hot content on afternoon radio in strong catholic bavaria, haha... i would have loved to hear that version...
Very cool for you two to chat being such fans. Love that Joe has a Fluance and is fine with it. Hearing about the Single Mix idea was cool - I think they should definitely do it. Joe using your tag - ha!
Yes! Please Do This Again.
This is 90 minutes of a great flow of information tucked into a flow of consciousness conversation. RUclips at its finest.
Bill so many thanks. This video was so enjoyable to watch. I learn so much!! I can’t wait for interview two same day!! Once again Bill thank you so much for ordering this for us to watch
Great interview
Thank you both
I would love the Yellow Shark on vinyl. I'm hoping for an anniversary release this year, perhaps in a beautifully presented boxset with unreleased performances, rehearsals, concert film disc, a lavish illustrated book... this needs to happen. Let's hope.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS. Thanks to Bill and Joe!!! I’d love to see some official live box set featuring EVERYTHING SALVAGEABLE from the Mothers in the 60s. Is this possible Joe? Much love 💜
I have a feeling that would be one effing huge box set!!
I doubt any of the audience tapes from 68 & 69 will ever see an official release....but there are a small handful of known SBD tapes that DEFINITELY should come out: appleton, wisconsin....toronto,canada....the fillmore east,nyc....the full 1968 whiskey a go go show.
Thanks for this Bill and Joe !!
An amazing episode. Can’t wait to see and hear what comes next from the Zappa vault ❤️
Great interview, well-paced and extremely interesting! I was really happy to hear of the possibility of GTOs reissues (the OGs on the second hand market IMO are so overpriced given advertised condition). I also hope (I didn't think to ask) more material is possible from the Grand Wazoo and Petit Wazoo tours (perhaps even Weasel Music?). Imaginary Diseases is such a great portrait of that era. Congratulations! You were the man to do this!
Some great questions here...was happy to hear Joe discussing a Läther release and the early Chicago 78 show.
Way to go, Bill .... Great as show!!!
I have a feeling that I am going to be skint again pretty soon, I still need to grab myself a copy of Eerie, now Zappa '75 - Zagreb, and now more vinyl soon on its way.
A great chat Bill and Joe, very interesting and insightful.
Carlos Santana was recording in digital and releasing on vinyl on his 1980 "The Swing of Delight" album, digital technology has come along a long way since then and digital audio on vinyl sounds better today than it did back in the 80's and 90's and that Santana album from 1980 sounds really good on vinyl to my ears.
So I really have absolutely no problem with digitally recorded albums making it on to vinyl, just get them out there and we will buy them, especially the entire YCDTOSA series in vinyl boxed sets although I may need another room, or a bigger house to live in, my Volume II looks lonely next to my Sampler double album.
Now I really can't expect to see everything released on vinyl and I would never be able to afford to own everything either financially or space to keep them wise but, if everything released late in his lifetime that was a cd only release were to be given a vinyl release then I would at least be able to finally complete the collection that I always wanted to finish and that is his lifetime catalogue on vinyl after which I would be happy to just have posthumous releases as cd releases although I would also count posthumous releases that Frank had completed production on prior to his passing as part if his lifetime catalogue.
funny how many proposals seem to be based on sentimental value to attendees: 'I was at that show, it was great, everybody should get to hear it!'
but in the spirit of the series of "Joe's [---]age" discs, how about a kind of "Joe's Frottage", a collection of guest performers either in studio or live. examples abound on the "Stage" series (Lisa Popiel for an obvious instance, Archie Shepp for another) but what about stuff like Nicolas Slonimsky collaging one of his piano "Minétudes" onto "A Pound For A Brown On The Bus" live on stage, Al Dimeola's "Clownz On Velvet", Tom Waits telling a joke to meltdown accompaniment, John Belushi's samurai sax solo, etcet. there's gotta be piles of such material that would make an absolutely fascinating study of how Frank was able to accommodate such a wide variety of artists into his musical world, which immediately put its stamp on them (it's their solo but it's Frank's music!).
then there's the opposite idea: Frank's participation in others' work: his solo on the Grand Funk album, another on Ponty's "How Would You Like To Have A Head Like That", another solo on a Robert Charlebois album, i'm sure there're lots more instances. a trickier permissions & sourcing puzzle but a fun idea (maybe)...
This thought just came to me. Bill, imagine pooling some resources and writng a Frank Zappa Discography book with Joe Travers. This way the collectors would have a reference book to pour over and decide about which albums to get. Kind of like what Bruce Spizer has done for Beatles fans. only in this case Zappa fans have a place they can go for some album art work and history of the LP and CD pressings. The super collectoer and the vaultmeister sharing their insites in print on the subject.
There are already several really good books and websites that perform this function. I should do a video about them along with links for easy access. Thanks for the brainstorm, I will have to act on this idea!
oOH Yeah !!!🌠
That was awesome
Zappa. Ellington. Best composers of the 20th century.
Molto interessante 👍
The next official FZ live release should be a 1969 box set featuring (at minimum) the shows from Toronto, Canada, Appleton, Wisconsin, the Royal Albert Hall (UK), and Newport, Rhode Island.
Yeah let’s just forget the fact that the last few FZ records are not on vinyl.
The date of the show with the gun incident in Tucson AZ was October 9 1981 (second show). There is a good audience recording of it so it wouldn't be my top choice for a vault release, but it's a good show.
Thanks for the info, Pat! Hope @CalvinWazoo sees this.
Zappa in Europe '82 - six shows 12CD, please.
Ha - my drum teacher Paul Francis played drums in Tranquillity! He played on the second album. :)
Please tell him I'm a big fan!!
@@jtmediacontent8134 I've passed it on! Also, check out his other band from a similar period, Fuzzy Duck... but good luck finding an original sealed copy of that one!!
@@drevildick SWEEEET!
@@jtmediacontent8134 BTW Paul was in the audience at the infamous Rainbow show and went to the hospital afterwards with a few friends to find out if Frank was still alive. There's an interview with him online - Search 'lewis chats with Paul francis' - You're welcome!
DAMN! Thanks
Joe's pronunciation of Zagreb is closer to how you say it. Ljubljana he pronounces almost perfectly except the first "Lj" should sound more like the second one 😂
I've been wondering for quite a while about exactly how much FZ studio stuff (rehearsals, alternate takes & mixes, outright unreleased compositions) from the 1964-1969 period remains to be released (officially or otherwise). Would be interested to hear if anybody can provide any specifics on this issue.
I'd like to see more unreleased studio material come out. Joe mentioned on a podcast that there's enough material for a Lost Episodes 2 disc, and Frank even conceived of this
before he passed away. Also, I wouldn't mind a release of You Are What You Is with the original speed restored.
Maybe not a common enough request to be high on the priority list, but I'd enjoy a YAWYI related release as well. It was the first album Zappa did at UMRK so I'd guess there are outtakes/alternate mixes around (some of them have circulated already).
@@patbuzby968 Oh, you can hear bootleg versions of it here on RUclips, but it would be nice to have it in good quality.
Quite a few of the songs sound radically different at the slower speed, and in my opinion, slightly better.
By the way, Cotillion (the Atlantic Records label that released the Woodstock soundtrack) and then Wounded Bird released Quill's self-titled album and it's not bad. They can come off a bit progressive at times ...worth a listen.
F*n QUILL Dude!!!!!!
@@jtmediacontent8134 , You know it Joe ! I'll give Tranquility's "Silver" a listen too since you gave it a recommendation. What no love for The Keef Hartley Band ?
Phase 3 vinyl?
thanks Bill. Had a great time for me. Please ask to Joe next time. Complete live set in Japan 1976. One time Joe said to Scott Parker that the tape is missing vocal. But FZ:OZ contains Japanese tune with vocal. So I think Joe has the good tapes. Any how thank you. I saw same your stuff, Varese and others. I have all what you showed to us. Frank is the best.
that Japanese tune is from Tokyo. The show with the missing vocal tracks is Osaka.
@@baerenonkel I have Osaka boot. That’s from sound board. So it sounds well. Sorry I don’t know which one is missing vocal, Tokyo. Or Osaka? Or Kyoto?
I tend to believe that's true because even on the Osaka audience recording, the vocals are very quiet. Possible a mic'ing issue from the start.
@@Cpayne30 Thanks
I think the big issue may have been Frank's vocals specifically. But don’t quote me.
I’d love to hear a release of Kyoto because that’s one of my favorite audience tapes. Very hot. I don’t think anything has ever been released from that.
Hi So is the Zagreb and lubjina records are worth getting please ?
listen to it and make up your own mind?
@@HakanTunaMuzik ok thanks….. was referring to what Joe Travers explained about the difficulties he encountered transferring tapes ….
I have most of Frank’s music mostly on cd what just wondering if like the recent issues Erie PA Mothers 71 these recordings were worth getting that’s all
Thanks for your time and help
@@marcpatrickbehar5098 have you listened to the one track that has come out so far, it sounds great. it's on all the streaming sites as well as on youtube
Its worth it for the Chunga's Revenge alone.
I paid $200 for a "hot stamper" of Wakka Jawaka. Best $200 I ever spent.
Those Hot Stampers are worth it, ha?
@@vivalapsychOnly that title and I traded for it. I don't have that kind of cash. The hot stamper was significantly better in all respects. But I cannot say that much money is worth spending on my budget. I have a white label promo that sound 95% as good. Cost $29.
@@recordcollectornews I was just curious for a firsthand account. I’ve read about these Hot Stampers (google it folks) and it kind of sounded like hysteria or vapor. But I could pull the trigger on one someday. It would have to be one of my top top favorite albums though.
Some times I wonder if I have things that would qualify for Hot Stamper status. I mean it’s possible, right? They’re not labeled as such…it’s sort of random I guess. Anyway my Zeppelin Houses of The Holy…a normal early US pressing by all accounts…I’d have to check closely for sure…sounds way better than it has any business being…but I’d have to do an A/B I guess. Maybe it’s just normally that great. Idk
@@vivalapsych Not all Hot Stampers are first edition. My Kind of Blue is a 70's Columbia. You probably have some hot stampers already. The most expensive one I have is Led Zeppelin 2. $800. Freaking amazing. I ordered Wakka Jawaka hot stamper. While it was in the mail I played my white label promo. I was really worried the hot stamper would not sound better. When I first played the hot stamper I said out loud, "What did they do to this record?" It's for real. Just a lot of work to find.
@@recordcollectornews wow. Well one day I may try it. As much as I love Waka/Jawaka…I think I’ll wait for the reissue that’s got to be coming. Those Zappa vinyl remasters have all been excellent. At least the ones I’ve heard. I think it’s no coincidence that Waka/Jawaka and Grand Waxoo haven’t gotten that treatment yet. I’m guessing they’ll come out in tandem with the forthcoming deluxe sets. I’m super excited for that!
Since Universal now owns the catalog, how is Ahmet involved with any of the decision making? I figured with the sale, the Zappa's are no longer part of the the equation.
Sounds like since Rage and The Fury is Varèse music not Frank's…the ZT still owns that project.
So that shows there are some exceptions to the deal. Including the Wild Man Fischer tapes, the GTOs and Trout Mask and who knows what else.
With FZ not on his plate as much, maybe Ahmet should get on that!
Can anyone put me in contact with Joe Travers? I'm an old friend.
Should have asked Joe why he left Zappa Plays Zappa .
Läther sounds awful, in part, and does most of the albums stolen by WB. Muffled and clouded, sound.
i do not like ted nugent. yuck.
