  • This is a reaction video to Kate Ceberano singing "I Don't Know How To Love Him" in the role of Mary Magdalene in the 1992 Australian tour of "Jesus Christ Superstar". This performance is taken from the last night of the tour in Sydney, Australia. Kate gives the song her own touch by delivering it in a soulful jazzy vocal style. Her voice is so smooth, you would think you are listening to the song in a smokey lounge. The instrumentation is also very soulful to the point of being a bit funky. There is a guitar that weaves in and out of the song that gives the song a jazz feel. Enjoy ...

Do yourself a favour - find a couple of quiet hours and watch the whole concert with the volume up - AMAZING❤

I absolutely love Kate’s version of I don’t know how to love him. Jesus Christ superstar was one of my all-time favourite musicals. I went to see it several times, also the movie. Kate’s voice is quite unique, she makes this is totally her own. If you’re interested, you could also check out the Marcia Hines version. Marcia took over the role of Mary Magdalene in the original Australian production back in the 70s. Like Kate, Marcia’s an Aussie icon, originally from the US. Loving your reactions to this wonderful show.❤️

Kate is a beautiful girl who can sing so well. She sings rock, soul, jazz and pop. Her song Bedroom Eyes or Love Don’t Live Here Anymore might be one for you to check out from 1989. She was a back up vocalist in the Australian Band, Models. Love her also in the cover of The Real Thing with Mahalia Barnes (Jimmy’s daughter) and Nikka Costa.
Marcia Hines singing with Jon English would be a must for you too. There are a few clips out there, but not a lot. Marcia arrived in Australia as a 16 year old in the production of Hair and then took over the role of Mary Magdalene in 1973. She had many hits also from the 70’s, and her daughter Deni Hines was the lead singer of a band called Rockmelons.

Nice summary. Fun fact- Kate’s father is the renowned Karate master Tino Ceberano.

I saw the Marcia/English 70’s version of the stage production of JCS but I haven’t seen a worthwhile recording of it. I went to Marcia Hines RUclips channel and saw that the 1st video was a performance of this song recorded last year aged 70. Still beautiful, still soulful but different to how she sang it at aged 20.
Fun fact: Marcia is cousins with Grace Jones and Colin Powell (secstate)

I think it would be interesting if you were to react to the song Help by The Beatles, and then do Joh Farnham's version with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. John originally performed his version in 1980 at The Royal Variety Performance in front of Queen Elizabeth, John Lennon was given a recording of this performance; John Lennon said "this is the way the song was meant to be sung", and apparently later that year before his death played John Farnham's version.

Australian-american pop singer Helen Reddy released her studio version of I Don't Know How To Love Him on May 10, 1971 by Capitol Records. Helen's greatest song I Am Woman released in 1971 became an anthem for feminism, as Roe v Wade made it's way from Texas to the US Supreme Court.

After hearing the Yvonne Elliman and Helen Reddy ballad versions of the song for more than 50 years, the Jazz treatment sounds unusual, perhaps a little less sincere. By the way, 103.1 KSCW in Sun City West, Arizona, plays both the Yvonne Elliman and Helen Reddy versions!

My favourite version is by Sarah Brighman. Kate did an album with Wendy Matthews called You’ve always got the blues and really shows her amazing talent.
