Yuichi Toyama, programmer behind MUSHA and other games by COMPILE mentioned in an interview that he loved Leynos so much and it was in his opinion the pinnacle of Mega Drive games. His response for that was Spriggan Mark 2 for the PC Engine, a story driven shooting game with tons of dialogue, cutscenes and weapon selection. Even visually it's very similar in style to Leynos.

One of my favorite Genesis games. I don't know if it was already mentioned in the comments section but there was a simple trick for invulnerability in this one, you just had to press start on joystick number 2 during the game. I can't remember if doing it once is enough or if you gotta repeat in every stage, but it certainly helps to see how it goes until the end. Your life meter still suffers damage but you always keep the last pixel
Ya, there's a few cheat codes for this game....truthfully, a game this hard should've had an automatic endless continue option (and not a cheat), but it was admittedly a well known continue cheat in those days (i was 13 in 1990, and most kids knew about this, and TONS of other cheats for many games).
You can perch in safe areas and fire your unlimited shot at the endless respawning enemies. There's a couple spots in the game where you can tape down the fire button, go do something else (or turn the frameskip to 10 if you're emulating), and rack up the top score and all weapons without dying
One of my favorites as a kid. It’s nice to see the unlimited continue trick still word on the switch. If you die past the first level go into the options menu at the start menu, then hit the start button and it gives a continue up that brings it up to nine or ten continues, then when you get down to the original number do the same thing at the start menu. It doesn’t work if you have too many continues or not enough continues, has to be the original amount
Target Earth is one of the few extremely difficult games I've ever played that compelled me to keep trying until the gameplay clicked for me and I was finally able to finish it. The key is to be patient, advance slowly and let your power regenerate whenever and wherever you can.
I started in a new job a month and a half ago and I love when for lunch break there is a new SnesDrunk video to see. Will never play almost any of the games being reviewed, but sure as hell love seeing the reviews. Cheers from Uruguay, been a fan for the last 5 years.
One of the best games on the system in my opinion (as well as having a fantastic soundtrack). There are some small bits of the story cut / different from the Japanese version, but nothing too glaring. A couple of bits that may help take some of the sting out of the game's difficulty: 1. The weapon unlocks you get are tied to your points.* The more points you get, the more unlocks you'll receive. Some areas you're able to farm a little bit before having to continue onto the mission objective. Make the most of it! It'll incrementally make things easier as you go along. 2. To address the * above, on stage one, if you manage to kill the boss and literally nothing else, then you'll unlock a copy of everything all at once. This goes a -long- way towards making the game significantly easier, but accomplishing this is a huge challenge unto itself, as the NPC's will sometimes kill things or enemies will blunder into explosions. All-in-all, it's an amazing and truly underrated game. If only it had stronger marketing behind it (and didn't have the change to the generic US boxart from the striking JP version).
Re: point 2, I think the same thing happens in Cybernator for the SNES. Cool that they essentially made that little "cheat" into a minor series-trademark.
I'd add that using control mode B makes for better/easier gameplay (as you can actually set your gun at an angle you like and leave it there....but both modes play the same for zero G levels). Also, i LOVE the western box art (it looks like a heavy metal album cover!). Maybe my fav Genesis game.
@@roberto1519 "Wait until you finally get to the good stuff" - this IS good stuff, says this 47 year old gamer, who's played almost every game on the console.
Yeah, I can't understand why they replaced the Japanese box art with the cool looking mecha with the more generic robots on the US box. How was that more appealing as this was a reason why publishers often did this. The original was too 'Japanese'?
One of my childhood favorites. I love that the enemies and allies spawn randomly, so it never gets repetitive when retrying a stage. I did manage to beat it legit once. My strat was to take the main machine gun and one BZ weapon (the one that shoots a single large blue sphere) and then load down on as much armor as possible. Take the levels slow using only the main gun, then run into the boss fights and blast your BZ right in their face. You should be able to outpace their damage and win.
Did you know this game got a 2015 remake on PS4 and PC (an actual HD remake rather than just a port like the PS2 release of Assault Suit Valken)? You can still buy it on Steam, although apparently it's perhaps an overly-faithful remake that didn't modernise it quite as much as it could have. This is an interesting series- with the first game Assault Suit Leynos, released on Genesis, and the sequel Valken released on SNES, Leynos II was released on Sega Saturn while Valken II was a PSX exclusive (although neither made it out of Japan). Be nice to see it get continued in a more modern form.
Check out a game called AT Votoms for the PS2. I would enjoy seeing a new Assault Suit game in such a style minus the on-foot combat, and maybe the space combat of a Gundam game added. Votoms btw was one of the sources of inspiration for the makers of Assault Suit Leynos and Valken.
I remember this one because of the Assault Suits Leynos PS4 remake by Dracue and Rising Star Games, apparently. Also this game got a sequel on the Sega Saturn, only in Japan.
It is really disappointing that Assault Suit Leynos 2 has not had an official port or a fan translation yet. I wish Dracue had also remade that game though I would prefer the original sprite art style.
This game also got a remake on PS4 a few years ago. It just remember finding in a GameStop under its original Japanese name. I was like “Oh this got a remake”
Yeah PSN has it on sale for $2 on the reg, picked it up and the entire time I was thinking "this is the Gundam game I wish I had on my 16 bit systems back when I was watching Gundam Wing on Toonami." The momentum based zero g sections feel awkward at first but when I got into the mindset that it's trying to emulate what you'd see in mech shows (but in 2D) I got super into it
Nah, it is more 'tank' looking than the more gladiator and samurai style Mobile Suits from Gundam. The designers of the game were more inspired by Armored Trooper Votoms when it came to the look of the Assault Suits.
Yo, SNESDrunk, this is one of my favorite Genesis games! Im about your age, still obsessed with the games of the era. How epic is the music in this one? So good! Thank you, SNESDrunk! 🖖🎮
Good review! This game is fantastic! One of my favorite run-and-guns on the Genesis not named "Contra Hard Corps". Just a head's up, there is a rom patch by hacker Vikfield that makes the game a bit more palatable called *"Assault Suit Leynos Reloaded"* It allows for infinite ammo (no reloading), increased ammo, stronger weapon upgrades and infinite continues. Personally for me these days if a game becomes too difficult I tend to just move on to something else and I think that's down to the fact that there's so much choice with Mame and Nintendo Switch online. Gone are the days when I'd shell out fifty quid for a single SNES or Megadrive game because back then if I was spending that kind of money I was gonna see it through to the end whether I wanted to or not. Absolutely is, but you nailed it - this game is RIDICULOUSLY hard.
This game also got a remake on PS4 with the original name and so forth, but it wasn't exactly a high budget remake whatsoever.
Daaaam the SNES is quite the step up in graphics
I actually prefer the sprite art style for this game over Cybernator...this looks more like the Robotech/Macross style.
@@RP_Williams yeah I can see that
@@joesshows6793 Also (just to say) this was an early Genesis game, and (especially looking back now, 30 years later) it's tough to say which console had 'better' graphics (ya, SNES had more colours and mode 7 graphics, but there's TONS of Genesis games that look absolutely amazing, and it's somewhat a matter of subjective preference to say one is better than the other)...i like to say they're both great ;)
It looks better in person, RUclips videos don't give you the true in person experience.
Now I know which Mech games play after Front Mission just to try it, thanks SDrunk! 😅
I know it’s gonna be a great day when you upload
An upload on a Friday? I like the change of pace, not gonna lie
No mention of the superior 2015 remake?...
That's a great idea buddy... you should make a video with the toughest games on genesis...
Yay Sega Drunk!!! It's going to be a good day :-)
These days I would recommend its remake; Assault Suit Leynos for PS4 and PC though the PC version has some graphic issues.
The soundtrack is God tier. I have the cartridge and the remake for PS4.
Bought it in 90. Hard as nails. Couldn't beat it.
You should make a list of the hardest Genesis games!!
myself and a buddy finally beat this game using a cheat code we saw on the gamepro tv show. still a great game.
From the Jeff Gerstmann hall of fame
I loved this game growing up! I couldn't beat it without an invulnerability cheat that involved a second controller. I'm gonna have to get this on my switch and see if I can beat it legit finally
Yeah this has always been one I might have liked more had I played it before Cybernator. Still bought the remake on my PS4. That was decent enough. The romhack 'Assault Suit Leynos - Reloaded' makes this Genesis original a lil more enjoyable.
This honestly looks amazing
I have this game on the Sega Mega Drive as a repro cartridge.
Dang that music at the end
Look at what's happened to me
I can't believe it myself
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world
It should have been somebody else
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
Just like the light of a new day
It hit me from out of the blue
Breaking me out of the spell I was in
Making all of my wishes come true
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
This is too good to be true
Look at me falling for you
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
😊
Nice review man!
Cool, I'd never even heard of this one before. I'll have to find a physical copy of it because I don't have a Switch and won't ever get one.
A little trick (not cheat) is ignoring everything in round 1 and running tot the end. You get more weapons in the following stages.
Besides I'm just not as good as I thought I was.
Happy Friday Everyone.
did you ever review the live a live remake?
90s mech games 😍
it was remade for the PS4 and is on Steam
Been watching for some years, what's your favorite game genre?
