Not gonna lie - had to restart this talk about 3 times because i kept getting distracted. And after finally reaching the end, I think I'll go sit and reflect for a while. I like this lady. I think there really could be something to this.

This is what's needed! I can't tell you how many times I have sat down at the computer, determined to get things done and find myself with several tabs open and I'm just looping in circles from the first to the last. By the time I walk away, hardly anything is accomplished and I'm more frustrated. I'm struggling creatively. I'm at A and I can see Z, but there's 24 layers of glass in between. As I try to map this or that, my brain has a sudden craving for inspiration and off we go, to get it. What does it accomplish? Nothing, just beautiful colors that I didn't create. So I'm thinking, if I can close my eyes and see my own colors, I can probably make my own things. As a child, I didnt need [outside] inspiration to be creative, I just sat down and tried. There were no cell phones, no computer, no apps... You went outside, looked at the colors, saw shapes in the clouds and connected to your creative side. I need to find my way back there, asap!
Spending time with your self can be a little scary, why do you think we are trained to keep busy! This is a beautiful perspective and a lot more rewarding I dare say. Really enjoyed this topic!

It's the purpose and the feeling of knowing what you almost missed do not be distracted by others loss of distraction we all have a purpose and must get to know that which change us to our greater selves.

I really didn't need another excuse to sit around and daydream, but thanks for making me feel good about that. I always thought it was a waste of time. It gives me so much joy and inspiration though!

Yes to this! Most of the major therapeutic approaches nowadays incorporate some form of mindfulness, which to me really demonstrates what a powerful tool it is.

More like the perfect antidote to distraction. What a fabulous woman, love her energy and her perspective. So many people are all about instant results but it just doesn't work that way, tiny little steps of progress in between distractions can get us very far.
we all just want another hit of dopamine! can you imagine if we had been forced to keep up journal writing all through elementary and high school? i feel like with this tech age, the simple act of sitting down and just word vomitting on a piece of paper with pen or pencil if so helpful. loved this talk Tania!
Stop instantly gratifying yourself, and living a life of pleasure. It's like constantly getting distracted on your path, while your route(values) are not being achieved, even though you'll be happier as a result of following your values. Not only will you live a fulfilled life, you'll be healthier psychologically.
Reflect on your values, your actions: your entire self. Then give yourself solutions which will help you change. Start, and don't stop, you will still encounter distractions, and want pleasure, so keep yourself accountable, and make yourself be in places which stop you from being lazy and pleasure-seeking. Do this by giving yourself goals, and having actual reasons for change, not: "I want to change", but: "I need to get better for this class/for this job", but actually join that class, and schedule that job interview!

Beautiful! Such a fabulous talk. I will say this though - many people stay busy as to not have to think about or process the negative emotions that rattle around in the back of their minds. So many people don't have the resources or capacity to be still and reflect, because what comes out when they really pay attention to what they're feeling... And we all know that seeking therapy doesn't come very cheap! And it's not very easily accessible. However, if we could start teaching things like this in schools, we might see we teach younger generations how to process grief, trauma and whatever else - and then we could all self-reflect without the help of a professional.
Thanks Carolyn. I really agree with this point, particularly re: early intervention. If self-reflection was taught as a skill at school alongside all the other skills we're taught in subjects like health and physical education, we'd have much more self-aware world! I know schools are much more focused on mental health nowadays than they used to be but there's definitely a long way to go.
These days we feed our children's inner puppy with smart phones and tablets, their eyes once alive and fun get glossy and dark.
Yes, as well as the fact that their 'inner puppies' are also much louder and less controllable than ours are (thanks to the fact that their frontal lobes and ability to inhibit their behaviours, are still developing)!
I used to see when I was out a restaurant (when we could go out) parents give their kids a phone or a tablet to occupy them. They will pay in the future for that!

When everything was open I'd be on a train to and from work, everyone head down looking at phones, ZOMBIES!!!!
And sadly it seems like a vicious cycle....when we spend all those moments on our phones, it starts to undermine our ability to socialise and converse with other people, and then the worse our social skills get, the more socially anxious and avoidant we become, and the more we want to continue escaping to our devices :(

To be away from distractions u need to annihilate all your thoughts which are embedded in your conscious subconscious and subliminal mind But a true master of Zahaz yoga can give give u true spark of Truth ful Quantum Gaze on your 3rd eye which will end all your distraction journey into your own Self or Reflective journey

Reflection is a very good thing, we must allow time for processing.
Brilliant talk, especially after the way the last year has gone. We are all learning a new line of thinking and how to best look after ourselves, and this woman's tips and tools are spot on.

Learning how to ignore that puppy is the hardest part though! I spend so much time looking at my map, trying to figure it all out and the moment I have just a tiny bit of clarity my puppy is distracting me and I can't even remember when I stopped being on task! I have taken up meditation recently and that is helping, but it's a slow process!
I am currently trying to rewire my brain Rebecca, and I feel you on so many fronts. It's a lot easier said I think!

I saw stats and I can't remember where, but suggests suicide has gone up dramatically since the smart phone became so big.
Wow, that's pretty terrifying - I'd be really interested in seeing those stats or the article if you can find it again. There's certainly a lot coming out about the impacts of technology (particularly social media) on loneliness, self-esteem/self-worth, etc, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was a link there.

The unexamined life is not worth living. But in fact, distractibility is the product of previous thinking. One finds one's thoughts often accusative. Buddhists sometimes say one goal is to have a friendly relationship with monkey (or puppy) mind. You want a mind that offers a stable foundation. Unfortunately, such a stable mind can support an orientation that might as likely tend to the dark side as to the light.
Maybe it is just a question of making a choice to will oneself along a path that seems right to you, perhaps in your heart. Taoism might have that kind of appeal; there are other candidates.
Some few have embraced a practice of repeatedly inquiring of themselves, 'Who am I'.
I never stop so I don't really know what would happen.
i like being alone and quiet, however, what about larger scale distraction as a faulty coping mechanism?
i cant focus on goals or anything past whats in front of me anymore

Distraction is a response to meaninglessness and fear of death.
This doesn't work for me :'0 I introspect and contemplate and self-reflect and what not every single waking minute even if I'm online on everything and anything, sometimes spending hours just staring at the wall, and yet I can get distracted by anything and everything even my own mind.
That hungry hyper puppy is a monster is created by hyper action of the desire to succeed. We've been wired this way and it's so that we continue to consume at the rate we are. There is definitely a conscious shift happening though, I think it might be changing!
It definitely is, if anything has been taken on this last year it's that we all live for instant gratification and need to take some time to slow down and figure out what's important.

Perhaps if we put more funding into mental health and educated we wouldn't have this issue at all. There are cycles if inter-generational abuse flying around left, right and center. Most people don't want to sit and self-reflect because they lack resources and support.

Is watching TED talks distraction? Or learning?
I think this an interesting conundrum, because sometimes it's hard to know where the line is when the content we consume feels informative and productive. I believe it's about the intent and agency behind it - if I am intentionally searching for TED talks on a particular topic because I've decided I want to learn more about it, that to me is productive, goal-directed behaviour. If I'm lost in a maze of TED talks from my 'Recommended' list, that I didn't initially come to RUclips to watch, and I'm just mindlessly consuming them without intent behind it, that to me would be distraction - even if they're great, informative talks!
