  • Phoenix (#3): In 1900 Phoenix became an incorporated city with 2,000 inhabitants, two railroads, an opera house, an ice arena, fifteen hotels, and nearly 100 businesses. For almost twenty years its mines yielded mountains of copper ore and gold. By 1919 mineral output declined and Phoenix was abandoned overnight. It stood as a classic ghost town for nearly 20 years before it finally vanished.
