Worked great for me using an electric leaf blower and room temperature air. I simply removed the large bins in the bottom and slid out the middle tray. I didn't otherwise need to disassemble any of the doors like you did here. I blew air into the 3 holes at the bottom center that you pointed out. Only took about 5 minutes of blowing. Thanks for the great repair tip! Addendum: I later found out that this issue can be caused by a leaking seal around the ice maker door. Mine had frost on the rubber seal. Leaking seals increase the humidity in the freezer compartment. Check and clean the seals on both the ice maker door and all the fridge doors. If the seals work properly, the automatic freezer defrosting cycle should take care of preventing ice build up in the freezer compartment, including the fan.
big thumbs up for this. We just bought a new home and our new to us LG started making some nasty noises. Watched your video and sure enough big chunk of ice behind freezer drawers. A bit of hairdryer heat and those pieces were easily pulled from the vents. No more noise!! Thanks!!
Thank you for doing this video... Saved sooooo much money for me on a long weekend on the frozen food front and not having a repair guy come out! Thank you!!!
Thanks Erik! Just heard the same noise and went to RUclips, and found your fix. Excellent explanation and 1 hour later I am now enjoying retirement! Thank you!
You were absolutely right! There was a glacier of ice back there, also you can pull that back panel off as well to access everything behind it.. 3 wiring connecters to look out for.. fixed my problem
Fixed mine LG fridge after watching your video , people like yourself make the world a better place ! Thanks so much for making helpful videos and God bless you sir !
Wow-- you saved us from a freezer full of lost food and a big repair bill as this happened to us today-- at the beginning of a three-day weekend!!! And we too, did not need to remove the exterior front drawer, just the interior drawers. Thank you so very much!!
This has happened a few times. Last night I had a midnight craving and got an ice cream bar out of the freezer. This morning I noticed the door was slightly opened and when I closed it, the fan started making a loud buzzing sound. So I take the top drawers out and break off all the ice that accumulated, but it kept making noise and I knew there was ice on the fan but I thought it will break off eventually but it didn't. So after watching your video I got the blow dryer and melted the ice. I could see the water slowly dripping down...thank you! ❄️
This video is of great help. I rigged up a hair blow dry on a piece of Styrofoam and profit in the fridge for about 10 minutes. Blew it on warm right at the motor. Turned on the fridge and it was quiet as the day it was bought.
Thanks buddy! I did exactly that.. "The kid" me left it ajar overnight, and this morning it sounded like a jackhammer. The fix was exactly as you said.
Thanks to your video, I found the problem, except in my case, it wasn’t the fan but the small brass coils vibrating against the compressor. Adjusting the legs stopped the noise temporarily but it would come back when the fridge was moved. Luckily I had a PC Richard’s extended warranty. Their tech finally got rid of it for good by moving coils away from the compressor. I told him about the fan noise thanks to this video so he opened the back and found the coil issue.
Yes, it was the kids! Thank you so much for posting this video. You are a lifesaver!!! My refrigerator no longer hums. I'm sure you saved me a ton of money in avoiding a professional coming out to troubleshoot. I didn't even have to take out the freezer doors I just slid a blow dryer pass the top drawer and defrosted everything. Thank you so much again!!!
Thank you! My LG does this about one a year. The past two years we've pulled everything out and unplugged the refrigerator for at least 2 days (suggested by repair person). This worked like a charm! I could hear the ice breaking behind the back wall and water trickling down. Took maybe 90 minutes because I let it sit for a bit before plugging back in.
I had the same exact problem. From first hearing the noise to a Google search to resolving the problem took 30 minutes! Thank you so much. You saved me a bunch of coin. :-)
Yup, this was my hypothesis as well. I can't tell you how many times I came down in the morning to find the bottom drawer open about 1/2" and stuff in the top was unthawed. I think over a period of time it builds up ice in the back, and it a heat source to melt it fast back there. I stuck my hairdryer in there for about 30 minutes and that finally melted it off that freezer fan.
Ours was making a grinding noise every time we got groceries. It was not level, however, there are no leveling screws in the back of the refrigerator so it was actually impossible to make correct. We ended up pulling out the refrigerator, putting a thin vinyl layer on the back, and then pushing the refrigerator back so it tilted less backwards.
Thanks, I needed to give the outside of the fan a couple of light taps with a hammer and I could hear ice falling from the fan, and that seemed to do the trick. Appreciate pointing me in the right direction.
Hi ,tnx lot would u plz tell me what tool did u use for melting the ice ?and the water resulted is not going to make a problem for the refregerator again .tnx again
I have an LG fridge and noticed this knocking sound in the freezer, I believe related to the ice maker. It makes ice just fine but, I can't figure out why its making that sound. Does anyone know what might be going on? I just have it turned off since, it can be really annoying and, sometimes it wont stop. The freezer closes just fine so, idk if it's the same problem that you had.
@@MichaelTolbert Ya, check the back of your freezer and see if there is ice in the holes in the back. The reason the noise stops is that the fan stops whenever you open the door so that it doesn't blow cold air out of the refrigerator or freezer.
I just got an LG delivered yesterday I don’t have the water and ice hooked up yet but it’s making too loud knocking noises once in a while. Ugh. Can’t be the compressor because it’s not on!
There's a known issue with these fridges. If it happens again, change the controller on the right side of the evap. It's a little part in a red plastic sheath. That tells the fridge how cold everything is and when to start a defrost cycle.
My LG fridge just started making noise but its coming from top area, and when I open the fridge doors, it stops. When I close it, the noise comes back on. It seems some kind of fan.
I got some problem, but I don't have any ice even I stop the power one day, the noise still on, I called lg, they told me I have to pay to fix it, then I sent email to ask, they told me it's normal. what a good Korean brand electronic, never buy it!

Thank you!! Just had this super annoying sound was driving us up the wall. All fixed now.
Thank you so much! You totally saved us a repair bill! Our LGirl is humming along nicely now, after a couple of nights of angry noises.

You are nothing less than a LIFESAVER. Many, many thanks to you for making this video.
Thank you for a straightforward video. Worked like a charm. I was about to pull this thing completely apart. This is what's good about RUclips.

Hello Erik. I think I have this problem. Did you unplug the refrigerator before doing this? Thank you for the video.

Fixed mine nicely, thank you so much..
Great Video!!! Helped me a lot. Once the ice was out of the way the sound was gone. THANKS!!
You nailed it! This fixed me up
OMG! I think that fixed it. Thank you so much for this RUclips!
Where does the melted water go. Is their a drip tray under fridge?
Hi ,tnx lot would u plz tell me what tool did u use for melting the ice ?and the water resulted is not going to make a problem for the refregerator again .tnx again
I used a hair dryer to melt it. The freezer has to close completely to avoid the problem again.

Suggestion: When making a how to fix video, please show the before and after fix (visual or sounds etc).
I didn't know it was going to work, so I did it first, realized it worked and then shared.

Thank you! I had the same issue, ice is gone, noise stopped! Thanks again! No kids here to blame tho. Ha! J
Thanks, Erik. Thought for sure I had a bad evaporator motor, but I had the ice too, cleared it out and working fine now.
Thanks Erik. Worked so far and yes, SAVE me money!
Great stuff. Thank you!
I have done same. But never need to unscrew the drawer. I let it melt the ice overnight. Usually a big ice chunk drops out in 10-12 hours
Instant resolution. Appreciate the video.
Same problem with mine. Howerever, I had a different model LG Frig. Happens when the kids leave the bottom frezzer door open:)
Awesome! Thank you Erik!
THANKS, BUT I DON'T OPEN ALL, JUST REMOVE THE TOP FREEZER AND USE THE HAIR DRYER BLOWING FOR 5 MINUTES, IT WORKS. THANKS
Perfect! Thanks so much
Was there ice build up behind the plastic panel's in the back of the freezer?
Yes
Thank you, it worked.
Hello Just wanted to say thank you for your video. You saved me some money. Thank you 👍
Bless you

Rick Cole it was making the noise because my kids didn't shut it all the way, and it thawed out and refroze
Erik Davidson that'll do it too!
Help how?
Said kid and open door, new it had to be my problem also. And it was. Thanks

Thank you so much...
Thanks again Refers are 3 grand so they say
Great video! Problem solved!!!!
So helpful.. Thank very much
How long did u blow dry for ?
Don't remember, I did it until the ice melted.
Thank you it worked
I think I have this problem now. is it like a drilling/buzzing sound?
this worked on my LG, thanks man. I was going crazy hearing the sound and LG customer service was no help
worked perfect. thanks a lot.
It probably means your evaporator fan motor is about to go out, thus the ice.
Quality content.
Ours was the defrost heater

how old is your fridge? my 18 months old, I bought 5 years warranty through Home Depot. Started make noise, find this video and fix the problem))
He's yummy!
Don’t buy an LG refrigerator. $5000 and nothing but problems.
