A lot of New Who season finales and regenerations have been too overblown, but this episode gets things about right. The action is epic without becoming OTT, and the explanation of Bad Wolf - which I remember caused a lot of speculation at the time among both press and public - was certainly unexpected, even if I don’t quite buy Rose’s reasons for spreading the words through time and space. It’s a shame we lose Jack here, but RTD reasoned that with a new Doctor arriving the focus needed to be on Rose building a relationship with him, which is fair enough. John Barrowman would soon receive ample compensation as work on Torchwood got underway… I have enjoyed the ninth Doctor much more in this rewatch than I did in 2005. I get him now in a way I didn’t back then, and Eccleston is consistently excellent - I agree that the quality of this season has been high too, with no real duffers along the way. The regeneration is poignant without being cloying, and I like the fact we don’t get a long, pompous speech, just a sad goodbye as well as reassurance for new viewers that the Doctor will live on in a new form. Incidentally, before you watch The Christmas Invasion don’t forget that there was a short Children in Need special preceding it which picks up immediately from where The Parting of the Ways leaves off (it’s on RUclips).
Didn'tt one of the papers run with a headline 'Doctor Wow!' at this point? The ratings were probably off a bit because it was summer, but it was certainly the first of those must-see endings. I am not sure it's been bettered.
Imo this finale has never been topped. The overall stakes aren't OTT, the theme is dark, the mortality insanely high. Emergency Programme 1 has never been implemented before or since. The Emperor Dalek is a brilliantly insane enemy. Daleks have never been so deadly. The first time a Dalek gets into the TARDIS, and the first time a Companion is exterminated. The only person who gets out of this finale alive is Rose, and that's only cause the Doctor saves her. No one is unscathed. The Daleks are almost undefeatable, the regeneration is perfect imo. I don't think you make a more perfect finale. This is the Daleks and 9 at their absolute finest.
I slightly disagree on the regeneration I thought it was perfect as it is here bare in mind this version of "Dr. Who" was introduced to a newer audience who have not seen the classic series and to them this would be their first regeneration so the Doctor would have to explain what's about to happen but I'm actually glad it wasn't so overdone. I feel with the NuWho regenerations particulary with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi's regeneration as much I live those two Doctors I felt their speech before regeneration went on far too long to the point where I'm saying to myself "Oh come on will you just get on with it and regenerate already your regenerating not dying" all they need is just one line like the Classic series regenerations then bam regenerate done new person i'm not a fan of when they hold the regeneration in either because that's why they keep blowing up the TARDIS when it happens i wasnt a fan of David Tennant's regeneration either i felt his dragged on too long with the companion goodbyes and abit shallow. Rose brought Captain Jack back to life but the rest including Lynda are still dead which I was slightly sad about this will be controversial but i would had preferred Lynda as the new companion rather than Rose to be honest I wasn't the biggest fan of Rose.
@@joshuajoshua2732 Yes, I would rather have swapped Rose for Lynda at this point, especially as Rose becomes quite unlikeable at times in the next season.

The Emperor of the Daleks has appeared in the Second Doctor story "The Evil of the Daleks" in 1967.

Why did Eccleston have to leave so soon 😢

Disappointed that your Bad Wolf reaction has been blocked, hope you get it unblocked soon
