  • You'll hear folks say that 'all mules do this' and it's not right. That said, there are several basic makeups that are true of mules.
    *They All Bite
    *They All Kick
    *They All Run Off
    *They All Buck
In this video, - an excerpt from Steve's clinic, 'Why Does My Mule Do That?' - Steve Edwards talks about the basic relationship between human and equine and how humans need to respect the nature of the mule and their herd mentality.

Definitely some useful info. I’m contemplating getting either a donkey or a mule for a farm guardian. Horses aren’t quite the best idea where I am (“suicide machines on four legs” has been bandied around) but the other equines tend to do pretty well. Mules are currently higher on my preference list because I could reasonably ride one unlike most of the smaller donkeys.
Still working things out but I’m trying to learn as much as I can before jumping in. I’m sort of hoping that whichever animal I get as a guardian will take exception to my mother as incentive for her not to try to move in with me. Heaven forbid that she makes an effort to adjust her behavior to work with other people or animals... 🤣🤣🤣

Dear Sir, what pasture surface does a mule require to be fed in grass and hay?

No grass pasture it’s best for mules and donkeys to be in dirt pasture. Grass has too many carbs for them Feed them grass hay no alfalfa. I own a little mule she does great with grass hay it’s not too much in carbs and protein.

Does tying up a mule help them to calm down?

Is it a good thing to ask permission to step into their herd? Because you speak of being the leader with square shoulders.

I approach my mule slowly with no treats or snacks and massage her withers and that makes her want to stay close to me and hang around trust me as her leader. She follows me as I lead.
