  • Johan Lundgren of Lundgren Guitar Pickups plays five of their killer PAF Humbucker versions and compares them to a 1968 Gibson Patent Sticker, Patent Number pickup. The pickups are:
    Heaven 57
    Heaven 67
    Heaven 77
    Smooth Operator
    Lundgren Prototype with unmatched coils.
    Johan is playing through a mid 1970s Fender Twin Reverb with a Greenback and a Vintage 30 (close miked) speaker. The guitar is one of Johan's Custom guitars for quick change of pickups (250k pots)

    Lundgren is one of the best brands out there but because they don't do much "marketing" you'll only hear about them from pro's when asking advice. Also, I guess its an age thing but from comments seems people focus too much on the freq. response and not enough to the dynamics of a PAF pickup.

    Interesting differences. On Riff 1, the pickups sounded so similar that I thought it would be difficult to tell them apart: but as soon as Johan started to play chordal riffs the differences became much more apparent. I don't know anything about the pickups' construction, but broadly it sounded as though the first three were in order of increasing gain; then the Smooth Operator more mid-forward and with less prominent treble. The prototype was different again - clearer and more open, but less beefy.
    If I had to choose, it would be the 57s or 67s - certainly for classic rock.

    There is not just one PAF sound! There are 5 almost indistinguishable variations that would sound completely the same in any sort of mix!

    I don't know if it's the amp he's playing through, but none of these sound like humbuckers to me at all, and certainly not anything like a PAF-style pickup. Each one has a distinguishable tone, but they sound thin, uninteresting and lifeless. And not in a "PAFs can sound like a fat single coil" kind of way at all. I'd like to hear these pickups through a different amp, but I'm sorry to say, nothing from this demo impresses me in the least.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  5 лет назад

      PAFs with mismatched coils are closer to single coils in tone. Never heard that before?

      We would love to show these pickups through another amp as well next time. Are you listening through headphones or speakers?

    • @Eywadude
      @Eywadude 5 лет назад

      @@JohanSegeborn Yes, I have heard of this. Original PAFs can sound like fat single coils. Very much so. Which is why I said, "and not in a "PAFs can sound like a fat single coil' kind of way" in my initial comment. I was saying that in this recording, the humbuckers played here sound thin and anemic and not in the way that original PAFs can sound like fat single coils.
      I'll very much give the benefit of the doubt that the sound of these humbuckers could very well be due to the amp used and perhaps different recording gear(?). I can imagine that your entire normal recording setup was not used in his shop for this demonstration, which probably didn't help. I am sure these humbuckers are capable of sounding better than they did in this video, but in this specific recording, my opinion still stands. I don't like what I hear.
      With that said, I would love to hear them in a guitar played through one of your Marshalls and with your regular recording gear at home. Also, if they are really good PAF replicas, you should play them against one of the original PAF Les Pauls you have played in past videos.
      My comments are not necessarily directed toward you or the quality of this gentleman's pickups, but again, in this specific recording, I just don't think they sound their best. I'd love to hear them in your own setup where we know how things usually sound in your videos. Peace and goodwill. Cheers.

      @@lundgrenguitarpickups2661 I am listening through my Sennheiser HD 650 headphones and an external DAC. I also listened through my Adam Audio studio monitors and the same DAC. I am getting an excellent sound. I'm sorry to say, but I just don't like what I hear. However, that's not to say your pickups are bad. I'd love to hear them through another amp too. Perhaps you can lend Johan a few sets for him to play through his amplifiers and recording setup at home, so we can get a good idea of what they sound like. We all know what his rig sounds like, so it will be a much better comparison. I just don't think the amp and recording gear used in this video was ideal (I can't imagine Johan brought all the same equipment from home with him for this demonstration). I think another video would be great so we can hear what they sound like with a different amp and recording setup. Thanks and take care. Peace and good will. Cheers. :)

      @@Eywadude Thank you. Glad to hear that you are listening to real stuff. We really like your feedback! You have some good ideas for sure. We are acutally do something like that in the (near) future. Johan S. bought a Heaven 57 Brigde PU and a Heaven 67 Bridge PU for his own guitars. He wants to have rawnickel cover on those. We use finest Nickelsilver. It will be a more fair comparison with Johan S. Rig- I agree with you. Thank you for the good idea. Another thing I want to share with you is that our Long scaled 25,5# guitar is made in alder and with Nitro. And the Bridge Humbucker comes a bit closer to the bridge compared to a standard SG or Les Paul. As you know this make a huge impact on tone. Brighter and less output.
