Ghosts 'n Goblins - 魔界村 - theme sight-read by Tom Brier, piano - ピアノ

- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- The melody of this 1985 Capcom coin-op videogame theme always has been ragtime, but the left-hand part in the game was arpeggiated. Last year, I received an arrangement from RUclips's "MrTrent" with a march bass and some extra little bits thrown in which turned the theme into a true rag.
I finally got around to giving Tom a copy of it during this ragtime party last weekend.
The theme was composed by Ayako Mori (森 安也子). The game Ghosts 'n Goblins was titled 魔界村 ("Makaimura") in the original Japanese.
The sheet music that Tom is reading can be downloaded here: www.keeper1st.c... or from my page www.keeper1st.c...
...and just now I notice that I put a wrong note in the 13th measure. Ah well. It's obvious that it's wrong though, so shouldn't be a problem. - Игры
His sight reading is off the charts.

sounds like the sound track of a silent film where the curly mustachioed villian is tying a fretting damsel to a log about to go through a sawmill.
Which is exactly what it's meant to evoke.
Actor Eric Campbell comes to mind!
If that guy can just play things that quickly straight away from a piece of paper without even practising it first, then I take my hat off to him. Or I would if I owned a hat anyway. I do play piano but I can't read music and it baffles me how people can hit all the right chords straight away just from reading dots off of lines. How do you find enough time in your life to learn that?
a silent film like animation of ghosts 'n goblins with this in the background
@@x8_ace_x by practicing playing by notes? Sooner or later you'll have to learn if you want to be a professional musician. I'm far from a master at what I play (viola and guitar) but my instructors have always used sheet music when teaching. Personally, I don't understand how people can play WITHOUT notes; don't you have to memorize the entire piece? To me that just makes no sense, it's so much easier when the song is written down so you can, you know, see what song it is and how to play it. That's just me of course, but there's no good reason not to learn to read notes if you want to be a "real" musician. It's way easier than learning to read/write in another language, I'll tell you that.

Holy crap. You and Tom(best wishes to him) are my two favorite pianists right now. I’m glad to see that he is appreciated even by someone who has a skill in transcribing and arranging music.
Considering this is a first read, this has to be the most impressive musical performance I've ever seen. I love that song. Please ask Tom to play some megaman music!
He needs to play this on a xylophone that is shaped like a person's rib cage.
lol
💀💀💀
Hahahahaha
Im stoned as fuck and not mad at all that this notification brought me to this at 4:25 in the morning
In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib twice in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we-- to believe that this is some sort of a-- a magic xylophone or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

This man can turn any song into ragtime, I swear!
Sure he can... but this piece already was ragtime to begin with. The arrangement he's reading even has the typical march left hand.
I guess maybe I don't understand what "ragtime" really is. I just figure it's that crusty old piano sound jangling around in the back of a western bar. I mean, the original song sounds more organ-like, so I wouldn't assume "ragtime" when I first hear it.
I also now realize I spent three hours listening to a genre of music yesterday that I thought had been almost lost :P
Yes, because we are inundated with syncopated melodies today it may be difficult to know what ragtime really is (ragtime never really died; it just morphed into other things). Instrumentation doesn't matter; ragtime is played on organs too! I made a video a few years ago that demonstrates what constitutes ragtime. ruclips.net/video/e8IM5-wUdng/видео.html
+Keeper1st the tune of the piano and the wood its made of.
What about 'Time' by Hans Zimmer. Goodluck on that one

大ファンです😊
オシャレでかっこよくてほんとに大好きです!
I wouldn’t have even been able to tell that this was his first time playing this song, let alone he was just sight reading it. The man, the legend. 😎
After hearing Kristoffer Maddigan say he used this channel for inspiration when creating the cuphead OST, i’ve noticed that the start of the melody (In 00:06) is reminiscent of the start of rugged ridge, both having swing, with their descending left hand and ascending right hand chords/arpeggios, i’ve also noticed that they both have a descending chromatic scale on the left hand with an ascending one on the right hand (As in 00:29, 00:37, 00:54, 01:02, 01:19, 01:27) as a sort of “intermission” when the main theme is gonna transition to itself (however tom brier plays this intermission with variation unlike in rugged ridge), as this main theme (First part being 00:12 to 00:15 and second part being 00:15 to 00:17) is repeated multiple times, with the first part mainly staying intact or undergoing slight variation, and the second part going substantial variation or straight up being replaced by another tune just like in rugged ridge.
Although it stops being incredibly obvious, i still feel the ending with the descending chromatic in a strong low note to get followed up into a high note (In 02:00 to 02:06) inspired the ending of rugged ridge which, only to a degree is similar.
And cant ignore the scales in 01:41 to 01:45 which were straight out copy pasted and put onto the ending of Forest Follies💀
And more obvious is this video. ruclips.net/video/_ChNUW4HtP8/видео.htmlfeature=shared
@@Keeper1st I on first listen i didnt recognize it because i hadnt heard funfair fever alot, but after seeing it on the description and hearing it again as a refresher, it was indeed, very obvious.Very cool to see the origin of this OST i've heard thousands of times.
I like how he’s just some dad who’s probably never held a controller in his life unknowingly entertaining nerds everywhere.
My favorite part is the guy on right just LIGHTING UP at 0:30
Player makes it sound like a perilous black and white movie from the 1930's, which was probably what Ayako Mori was aiming for originally?
才気の迸りを感じる。素晴らしい。
This brings me untold joy.
What I love is that you have this excellent friend who obviously enjoys playing whatever offbeat music you put in front of him, and everyone just gathers around to hear him make magic out of it.
My dad has been playing this game for 16 years, and not even completed. I played it for a year, and completed it countless times, no sweat.
His hands move so fast i had to watch a few times to make sure it was being fast forwarded. it's an Amzing skill he has! :)

Ironic that Tom Brier was probably learning the piano while the rest of us chose to play video games instead heh. He's legendary.
Nothing's saying you can't do both
I do both.
@@SmugSuspenders It was more commentary on the commitment one might need to become as good as Tom Brier would take up enough of the day that it would be a challenge to find time to sleep, much less be a gamer who puts in enough time playing the video games that they remember all the songs. I played too many games as a kid...
I be fair if you can beat ghosts and goblins that amount of skill rivals that of a good pianist
@@JacksonWithrow82 I don’t think Tom needed time as much as he relied on pure flow state. This man is incredible, I don’t think time is what what made him this good. It’s natural

My god, this is absolutely unreal. This goes beyond natural talent, beyond pure genius!
That is unreal. It would take an average person 20 years of practise to even play it at that level of skill. How the f...ing hell can he just sight read it and play it without ever hearing it to that standard. My tiny brain cannot even comprehend how that is even possible.
His playing is fantastic, but his beard scares me...

It pretty much was. The original melody was in ragtime. The bass line was just in arpeggios. The score given to Tom just puts a march left hand on it which makes it a "true" rag.
so good
This made me smile. Partly because I love this game and it's difficulty and his incredible playing skills on this piece.
