    I’m honestly really sad and disappointed that this movie ended up failing. Ever since DreamWorks made Puss In Boots 2, everyone has now given them the expectation of creating masterpieces when that’s not what DW is in the first place. They’re hit or miss, meaning they can make good movies while sometimes making the bad ones. I still wanna see this movie but I hope that it will at least make me feel entertained.

Whenever there’s a miss like Shark Tale, Shrek 3, Teenage Kraken, Turbo, Monster VS Aliens, there are also hits like the rest of the Shrek films, HTTYD trilogy, The Madagascar and Penguin movies, the Puss In Boots movies, The Kung Fu Panda trilogy, Megamind, the 2D movies and more.

      That’s true. Dreamworks has always been hit or miss. However their hits are so good that it can make us forgive for their misses.
      I still admire Dreamworks for still going experimental and trying new things and not doing only sequels.
      Last year we had an original project (The Bad Guys), then a sequel (Puss in Boots 2). This year we have Ruby Gillman (Original) and Trolls 3 (Sequel). Next year we will have Orion and the Dark (Original), then Kung Fu Panda 4 (Sequel).

      Yeah I want to do that too because like, the lies she said about living a miserable life due to a war that she never wanted, her mother did, was so much more interesting than her just being evil with no motive. It should have been the truth. Chelsea and Nerissa should have been two separate characters.

  • @shadowbeast9671
    @shadowbeast9671 11 месяцев назад +43

    Chelsea and Nerissa were originally 2 separate characters, with Ruby's mom having killed Nerissa and Chelsea wanting revenge. But that got changed most likely since it would make Chelsea's actions justifiable and would make Ruby's mom a killer (even though they were at war). It's a shame that part of the plot was changed since it added both depth and motivation to Chelsea's character.

Not only wasn't the first teaser released until three months before it hit theaters, but they spoiled the big twist villain reveal, and almost everything else in said teaser. Sooo here's my unprofessional, probably dumb ressurection of the plot, return to the storyboards, when Chelsea and Nerissa were separate characters: Chelsea(the mermaid we see in the movie) is not actually Nerissa but a pretender. The real Nerissa is her mother(imagine a narcissistic abusive, manipulative parent) and she sent her out as a sacrificial lamb, while manipulating her into believing this was for the good of mermaids. Nerissa, her own mother sends her out expecting her to die literally sacrificing her own daughter, so that the Krakens remain in a false sense of security about her true fate. While in the cage, Chelsea awaits for her mother to rescue her... but nobody came. She has now truly lost everything, her own mother letting her to rot, and to further let things go sour, she has to answer for her mother's crimes. And she is left in the cage without a family and without her fame and reputation... now she has nothing, and Ruby has everything she ever wanted. So here I imagine it can go 2 ways, either Chelsea goes full vengeful out of envy and hatred, blaming the krakens for her situation, or she redeems herself, and becomes better. A professional writer could probably make this work

  • @KieranQuinones
    @KieranQuinones Год назад +30

    I think the biggest issue with this movie is the twist villain scene. Chelsea being a twist villain does not make any sense. There was no real reason for her to not only be Nerissa, but a Twist villain. There were deleted scenes that had Chelsea being Nerissa’s daughter who wanted to avenge her mother, which kind of would’ve made a better twist villain, but the twist still feels forced. Maybe go along with your version of the story, and maybe have Nerissa force Chelsea to touch the trident and she turns evil from the power of the trident. Eventually during the climax, ruby would get Chelsea to snap out of it. Then Ruby and Chelsea can give a speech to the krakens and mermaids that they don’t have to fight anymore and the war should stop. The mermaids and Krakens could agree to stop, but Nerissa still doesn’t want to stop, so Ruby, Chelsea, and the other mermaids and krakens could stop Nerissa and take the trident from her. Then Captain Gordon can lock her up.
    Also I think this movie could have also worked as a musical. (I know DreamWorks is in general not the musical kind but heyyyyy) Mabey have Ruby sing a few songs, have Chelsea sing a few songs, maybe have the villain sing a song, but here is something that I thought would really work. Why not have the movie open with Ruby’s mom singing a heart touching sad song about how she misses her home and her family. And we get a sad flashback of when she had a terrible argument with her mom and left. The would be really emotionally opening
    😭 🥹 and you would actually make this movie great. Oh wait, the would make the kids sad, and we can’t have kids crying can’t we DreamWorks? 🙄

    When Puss In Boots - The Last Wish came out, and everybody started calling it a "masterpiece" and saying Dreamworks had finally outsmarted Disney, they appeared to be forgetting:
    1 - Back when it produced actual masterpieces (The Prince of Egypt, as an example)
    2 - The fact that its last movies before this and The Bad Guys (kind of wasted, in my opinion, but still technically more relevant) were Spirit's remake and Boss Baby 2
    3 - How much of a "hit or miss" it will always be as a company.
    All of this to say... I still gotta see this movie, but I wasn't surprised in the slightest when, after trailers started popping out, it looked much less inspired than Puss in Boots - The Last Wish.

    Seems to me like everyone whose reviewed this movie all agreed this film shouldve been about the war between the krakens and the mermaids, and the effect it has on the friendship between the two girls rather then what we got.
    And i agree.
    Like there’s a good movie buried here somewhere.
    Like for example, maybe the grandmother is indeed racist against the mermaids, she's fully into this war against them, deeming them as pure evil beings. But Ruby's mother ran and took her family with her, not wanting them to be hurt or in danger, especially given how her mother has been throughout this conflict with the mermaids.
    Maybe Chelsea is Narissa's daughter. Narissa, unlike Ruby's mom, is committed to this war because her own mother died in it. She wants Chelsea to feel the same, reminding her of what those krakens took from them.
    Maybe sending Chelsea to use and trick ruby after discovering where her family has been hiding out, hoping to gain a way to win the war and defeat the krakens once and for all.
    But Chelsea and Ruby form a genuine relationship over the film ( platonic/ romantic?) And Chelsea no longer feels comfortable with the fact she is supposed to betray her.
    But something goes wrong, narissa and the grandmother's war escalates, ruby feels betrayed that she just got in touch with this side of her family and feels she ruined everything and its all her fault for trusting Chelsea.
    But the girls make up and find a way to end the conflict between both sides so they can come to a peaceful resolution with each other and understand the other side aren’t monsters.
    Would it be a completely original movie? No
    But it could still be good, even despite that.
    And unfortunately, they just didnt play well into its strengths regarding its story.
    Bad marketing sucks, but a film can still be great regardless, this one just missed the mark in both and i feel bad that its probably gonna be forgotten in a month.

    The one thing I actually kinda liked is that they don't give Chelsea/Nerissa a redemption arc when it could've been easy to do so. I've seen people say they wished she did have one but I have to disagree, I've personally met and seen people who act like Nerissa, where they pretend to be someone's friend, but instead treats them more like a pet or is just using them
    That being said though it wasn't handled well, I agree that it would've been far more interesting if they grew to become friends and or lovers, but if they really wanted her to be a villain, I think if the movie had it where Ruby and Nerissa were friends at the start, and have it where Ruby realises how much of a toxic person Nerissa is throughout the film, I think that would've been far more interesting and could serve as a good message about its ok to cut toxic people out of your life

    • @achinthmurali5207
      @achinthmurali5207 Год назад +10

      I agree they didn’t handle Chelsea well, but I disagree with the idea that she should’ve been a generic fill-in. The reason why is she was designed to be a mean girl they were transitioning to being a truly evil cruel, villain. The problem is bullies like mean, girls are not the same as forces of evil like maleficent, or others. Now I know that she is spoilers an adult in the story or at least a permanent teenager. The problem is for all practical purposes she is a kid the marketing showed her as a kid. We see her as a kid for most of the movie and having her become an evil kid, without showing it feels wrong. The other issue that I had was her villain it wasn’t very compelling. I would like it if she had some vendetta against the town and that she wanted to destroy it.

    • @achinthmurali5207
      @achinthmurali5207 Год назад +9

      Also, while I agree that there are people like Chelsea in the world, who essentially treat their friends like pets or assistants, in my experience, it is not the result of evil, but rather the result of insecurity and apathy, and in some cases, even childhood trauma, which causes them to fail to understand how a real relationship and real friendship is supposed to develop, that’s just my experience. It would’ve been cool if they showed her growing as a person and they showed Ruby growing and maturing as a young lady Chelsea could learn how to relationship is supposed to be and Ruby could learn how to be actually mature and listen to her mother.

Really should have Chelsea say who she said she was and have Nerissa be a separate character and the main villain and have Grandmamah play a bit like Stoick from How to Train Your Dragons.
    Ruby and Chelsea should actually become friends or maybe have them become romantically involved and have them want to end the war by destroying the trident. They get it, but Nerissa steals it and transformers causing chaos and fights the krakens. Ruby and Chelsea fight her and in the process Chelsea saves Grandmamah and this gets her to see that not all mermaids are evil. They destroy the trident and Ruby and Chelsea bring peace between the krakens and mermaids.

    I saw this more out of wanting to see SOMETHING (or morbid curiosity, take your pick) and was utterly disappointed. It's Dreamworks animation at its laziest. The plot is "What if Ursula was actually the hero?" but then proceeds to do nothing with that. Like, maybe the trident was a corrupting power which is why Ruby's mother hid it (because she couldn't destroy it), and Chelsea honestly did think it could bring peace, and Ruby has to convince mom and Grandmama to destroy the staff while sparing her corrupted friend. That might have given the movie it's own reason for existing, but instead it really is just a twisted The Little Mermaid, and nothing more. It's well made, I'll give it that, but the story is trash.

I also hoped this would be a better mermaid movie than The Little Mermaid (2023), where it was making fun of Disney with Chelsea. The one thing I liked is how Ruby had to show in the climax how to prove how Krakens are good when she had to fight Chelsea at the end. Thank you so much for all the things you said in this video. Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is a 3D animated kids movie with completely full of wasted potential. It has a mediocre and generic plot with a highly obnoxious and predictable female main antagonist in the form of Chelsea Van Der Zee/Queen Nerissa who's just nothing more and nothing less than a cheap knockoff of Ariel from The Little Mermaid. I'm also so freaking glad I'm not the only one who thinks Chelsea is the worst main villain in Dreamworks history. Plus, when Chelsea transforms into her giant monster mermaid form, she looks more like a Siren than a mermaid. In fact, it would've made a lot more sense if the krakens were at war against the SIRENS instead of the mermaids. And making mermaids evil just for the sake of the plot is not only ridiculous but it's also just bad, lazy writing.
    And the only two things that were actually good about this movie were the animation (except for the designs of the human characters) and how much of a relatable main protagonist Ruby Gillman was in the film.
    It's also just a cheap knockoff of Turning Red meets The Little Mermaid 2 with a hint of Luca, Encanto, and The Incredibles. Both the Croods and the Trolls movies were way better animated movies than this one did in comparison.
    But this is what happens when you make a kids movie with only a $70 million budget with very poor marketing.
    So, I am still giving Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken a 4.5/10 with a three-star rating and a solid C-.

    I like that Disney and DreamWorks failed at the same time. Sony is the only one who's actually doing consistently good in these recent years.

    I actually saw a trailer of this when watching Thor Love and Thunder all things, and I distinctly remember to decide not to watch it because it looked like another spoof movie, and outside of Shrek Dreamworks doesn't have the best record woth those.
    Then again Shrek being a spoof is already a stretch to begin with.

      Shrek is more of a subversion of traditional fairy tale tropes (at least the first 2 were) rather than a spoof film.

    I’m feeling pretty bad at this film when I first looked at the trails it looked promising. I was expecting it to perform well at the box office and I was and I knew it was gonna be another jump on DreamWorks instead it turns out to be this late I didn’t seem to mind the spoilers the trailers showed and honestly yeah I feel bad for this film. 😥

    Daron Nefcy *wishes* she made this similar to Sony's Hotel Transylvania and despite this movie being a major flop, this ain't gonna kill off Dreamworks that easy. Imagine Dreamworks decided to continue Disney's live action reboots as their new villains (or regular rivals) In there next future film.
    *Sequel Month for both Dreamswork and Pixar are coming around the corner*
    Pray we still survive this one!

    Ruby Gillman is a good example of the "Flip the Premise" storytelling. And if you are going to ask "What's 'Flip The Premise?'" (Let's call it FTP for short), it's a writing technique where you take an existing story and flip it by making the hero into the villain and the villain into the hero. And then, you write a synopsis for your FTP story. And then, you strip your FTP story to the bare bone but keep the story's concept and make your own story out of it. FTP is what writers use when they have writer's block. It's the best technique IMO if you have writer's block.
    And Ruby Gillman is an FTP story of "The Little Mermaid", obviously. Ruby is basically the good guy version of Ursula and Chelsea is the bad guy version of Arial. Other FTP stories like this includes Bright starring Will Smith, which is the FTP version of Lord of the Rings.
