Crazy assed pilots! I crewed Vipers for 33 years and have seen some crazy stuff, never crewed combat though! I've been very lucky to have spoken (actually listen) to numerous Vietnam pilots, the stuff they've told me most wouldn't believe, Misty Fac missions, Bolo and just Mig sweeps. No Sir, Mr. Brent, I was an aircraft mechanic crew chief, responsible for all maintenance, servicing and correct configuration of the aircraft at all times. Wouldn't trade my career for anything!
Actually the gentleman says "...I got upside down at about 150ft..", BUT flying inverted AND supersonic at 150ft (about *45 meters* in the civilized world😜) it's still insanely low & fast and absolutely insanely badass!!!

Modern-day aerial weapon systems are so dynamic, I found early in my career that until you rack up hours of training and experience, the sensory saturation can be extremely overwhelming. The funny thing I found was that when all my human senses were bombarded simultaneously at high airspeeds, my brain seemed to start processing only the senses I needed to survive at that given second. I wouldn't realize this until after I landed and popped in my mission tape and saw everything you missed!
Excellent talk. If they had guns they could have strafed the migs while on the runway and saved a lot of messing around. But as we know guns were obsolete. 😮
Here's what many don't understand. Vietnam was a "police action" by us and not a declared war meaning we could return fire but not fire first. Because of that even if they had guns ROE (rules of engagement) issued by DC (by Johnson and McNamara) prevented them from attacking aircraft until they were "hostile" meaning airborne. Yep that's right, they couldn't hit an aircraft on the ground for fear of harming a Chinese or Russian advisor and dragging them into the war. I was active duty Navy from 76 to 81. I met many pilots and aircrew that had story's of total frustration over seeing things like SAM's being unloaded from ships up north and they couldn't do anything because ROE prevented them from attacking. That same ROE cost us many aircraft and aircrew. Vietnam wasn't a conventional war like WWII, it was a cluster............

I knew that our military was held on a tight leash by the politicians in Washington, but did not know that the reason was because these fools were pretending it was a “police action” and not a war (which of course it was). McNamara was such an idiot. “Police action” - just like Putin calling the invasion of Ukraine a “special operation”.

Not to be too pedantic, but he wasn't "Winchester". From the video, he still had Sparrows so unless he also shot them off, he wasn't really Winchester. FYI. Bombers also use the term Winchester when they come back from a mission without any bombs which in World War II wasn't something special, but for today when all the bombs are guided and dropped individually on specific targets, Winchester means that a B-1 or B-52 has really put the hurt on the enemy.

I fought in Iraq as an infantryman in 2008. Kurt was a hero to me from Dogfights and he's absolutely still a badass totally in awe

There was a Sabre that got stone stone chips in its leading edges while chasing a Mig in Korea. Not all dogfights are at 10,000 or 40,000ft.

@@dennythomas8887 I've often wondered how many North Vietnamese Migs were really flown by Russian pilots. And the same in Korea.
