Godzilla Minus One is a great movie that happens to have Godzilla in it. Take the characters and their basic stories and replace Godzilla with a natural disaster and this would still have been a great movie... it just wouldn't have gotten the exposure.

Godzilla has always had an atomic breath. The first movie it did appear as like a mist. But it still cased an explosion when it hit. Just not this big. Some movies it appears to be more powerful than other movies. Most movies it always appear as an electric blue fire color. But it's not a laser.

Godzilla floats the same way the large ships do. Think about how much bigger Godzillas lower body and tail are compared to its upper body. The water displaced keeps him buoyant enough for his top half to rise above the water.
For the intro where Godzilla made no noise, remember that base is literally right on the shore. He was in the water just before appearing on the base.

This is exactly what I wanted to say. I get what she's saying that, maybe there should have been more recognition from the pov of the characters we were following at the time but, obviously someone heard/saw him and sounded the alarm. Plus, I feel like, if he had been terrorizing the island for who knows how long, he probably learned to be sneakier. At his full size, I don't think anyone is getting creeped up on by him but, before the atomic growth? I buy it for the most part.

I think the film subtly suggests Godzilla is naturally buoyant, using a swim bladder and treading water to stay vertical in the deep sea so when Godzilla looks like he is standing in the ocean Godzilla is just standing straight up floating.

Godzilla isn't standing in the ocean. It is maintaining neutral buoyancy like any fish in the sea can. For instance, large sharks use their livers to maintain their buoyancy to keep from sinking. He can float near the surface in this manner without even treading water like a human would have to because he is an aquatic animal.

The black splotches on Noriko's neck are most likely G-cells from Godzilla, it's pretty much how she survived (you'll notice that the splotches move a little and it cuts to Godzilla healing/reforming at the same time).
Now that's just a theory among Godzilla fans, I lay no claim to that being gospel/written in stone...... it's something that's a big debate among some Godzilla fans, I just happen to subscribe to that theory....... regardless of what the splotches actually are, I'm all in because I freakin' loved Godzilla Minus One!!!

Although it is not depicted in the movie, I think he must have been very sad. Shikishima was also a member of the suicide squad, but he did not take off. He's more dense than air or freon If the water is full of freon bubbles, the water is way less dense. You would not be able to float or swim in it. Godzilla was mutated by exposure to the atom bomb test. Its size, "heat ray," regeneration, were all the result of that mutation. But its skin was permanently charred by the bomb, leaving it in constant pain.
The deep-sea fish looked like that because Godzilla churned the water when it rose to the surface, forcing them up so fast that the change in water pressure made their insides expand like balloons, killing them.

What’s terrifying about this Godzilla like you said is how adept he is at moving quietly in the first scene on the Beach. It’s not a plot hole, I think he was literally stalking their base and making his footsteps lighter just like how tigers do when they hunt. He only appeared because he began to move in already after the first roar and then was hit by the light. That actually makes this so much more menacing, he was stalking their airbase.

The reason he didnt make noise is because he wasnt on land yet, they yelled "light the beach" because he was just coming ashore. The reason he was able to hold himself up is because he has a tail thats incredibly strong, the reason why they didnt show him swimming is because its considered something you should know already if youve been in water. Alligators can launch themselves 6 feet in the air out of water with just their tail.

It's amazing that the original Godzilla movie came out 70 years ago and still had the same effect on people even though there was no CGI at the time. That means the movie maker back then knew how to stir emotions and what I felt watching this movie was that they were trying to recapture a similar feeling to that original movie. Including a happy ending. Even though back then the scientist who came up with the idea that got rid of Godzilla was also killed in the end. Of course the original Godzilla included Raymond Burr in a pivotal role.

    1. He was a Kamikaze Pilot who didn't perform his duty. A Kamikaze pilot is trained to crash their plane into enemy ships to inflict maximum damage but dying in the process.
    2. The Alien things were deep sea fish that were drawn up from the deep to fast and their swim bladdered exploded outside of their body. Deep Sea aquatic creatures use swim bladders to stabilize pressure at ever increasing depths to keep the water pressure from crushing them. However, if such a fish is drawn up too fast the pressure of the swim bladder is greater than that of the water and thus it explodes out of their body.
    3. Godzilla crawled up from the sea and they heard him doing it before they saw him.

The mark on her neck at the hospital is a Godzilla cell. It's probably why she survived the blast. It helped to heal her.
But to what end? Will she mutate? What of the other victims who might have similarly contracted the Godzilla cell?
I've also heard that the tattoo on her neck is a symbol for Mothra. Perhaps Mothra will be featured in the next movie?? -OG

Godzilla standing in the water IS a regular question. When you see him walking the bottom of his body his legs and the tail are huge. Enough for the Archimède push to help him standing with a few moves of the legs and tail Under water. WE just Can see the upper body above the water wich seems to be only a quarter of his mass. Godzilla uses a combination of a swim bladder and treading water to manage its epic middle-of-ocean stands, also the use of music in this movie is perfect and this is the original composition. I believe to the 1954 Godzilla.

There’s a good reason why Godzilla appears at the start right after Shikishima deserted his kamikaze mission. The original Godzilla was an allegory for nuclear weapons, but this movie is an allegory for Shikishima’s guilt, shame and ptsd of not completing his duty in war. That’s why the monster appears right after the mission. And the Freon gas pumps lots of air bubbles into the ocean so that nothing can float. That’s how they kept Goji at that depth.

I love the foreshadowing in this film. The dead radiated deep sea fish rising to the surface too fast that their stomachs explode out of their mouths due to the pressure of the sea.
They similarly attempt the same concept against Godzilla. Using the force of nature where tanks and battleships fail.
But Godzilla is also a force of nature. He's the unknown element created from atomic energy. -OG

In 'Godzilla Minus One,' Godzilla displays an uncanny ability to effortlessly rise vertically from the ocean depths, a feat that strongly suggests the presence of a swim bladder or similar organ within its colossal frame. This biological adaptation, often found in fish, allows for buoyancy control, enabling them to ascend or descend with minimal effort. Considering Godzilla's massive size and the immense pressure of the deep ocean, it's highly unlikely he could reach the surface without some form of internal buoyancy regulation. It's a detail that adds to the overall realism and scientific credibility of the film, allowing audiences to marvel not just at Godzilla's overwhelming power, but also at the ingenious biological systems that make it possible.

Godzilla has always been able to maintain an equilibrium in the ocean where it looks like he's standing in the middle of the sea. That's virtually true in all his movies. He's a creature of the sea more than he is of land.
You just have to accept he has that ability or suspend your enjoyment of the film by making an issue out of an already science-fiction creature.
Just remember, when they first demonstrated this plan at the town hall, they had a wooden representation of Godzilla standing at waist deep at the top of the water too. They knew he could do that. -OG

  • @Col_Fragg

FYI: The reason that Godzilla looks like he is standing up in the ocean is because he is. When the scientist was explaining his plan on how to kill Godzilla, he displayed several illustrations. In these illustrations, you can see there is a platform. This platform has the gas canisters and the balloons that will be inflated as part of the plan to kill Godzilla. For that plan to work, they had to lead Godzilla onto the platform. Only then could they activate their trap. When you see Godzilla standing up in the water, that is how you know that Godzilla is on the platform and in the "Kill Zone."

Godzilla was always able to do that Atomic Beam, it just varies on how it's presented, like how in Shin it was a precise laser, in the Monsterverse movies it's more breath-like, and in here it's more of a beam that erupts into a massive nuclear explosion. Also I'm sure the Dinosaurian Godzilla wasn't baby probably just a pre-mutated form. Love the reaction btw.

For something to float it just needs to have less density than water... there are 30-40 ton whales and they float, there are also animals like hippos weighting 15-18 tons (half of the weight of some whales) yet hippos can't float.

Yes. This is my favorite Godzilla film to date. No other monster film incorporates the human element so well as this film.
A story of redemption with a character driven plot on the part of the civilians to do the impossible and defeat Godzilla.
A story highlighting PTSD. The awful expectations of a komakzie pilot. This is an anti-war film. Lastly, it's a story of love. A human story that happens to have Godzilla in it. -OG
