The oil holes does not have to line up. The groove that is turned on the shaft around the holes means that whatever the orientation oil can circulate around the groove which act as a reservoir and enter the oiling points.

Interesting first comment. You do have a diverse audience. My 9A started with the small dials. I replaced the crossfeed with a satin direct read about the same size as your new one. The compound feed has a large dial but not satin chrome. Both very easy on old eyes. Great video as always

I took "machine shop" back in the early seventies, got my lathe work on a lathe very much like this one. We had about sixteen or eighteen of them, all from the early forties back in Chicago. I've got several Logan's of the same generation, a 42, 48 and a 46 that at ten by 42's. I've rebuilt them all at least once, they are a bit easier to rebuild than a south bend. These were the real workhorses of that second world war.

I'd say oil that little hole, the two holes in the threaded collar are trapped inside the cross saddle EDIT: THREADS and if we dump enough oil down the cute little plug hole, it'd get oil. ?
The older cross screws are a Wiley bugger to try and straighten.
If I may? The original cross feed grad. collars are not direct reading.
Might that be a short subject? I'd like that info to clear it up. Is it to remember to multiply by 2 the small dials to actual work done? This older 9 smacked me in the face with that just an evening ago with that.
An older machinist tried to stump me with "You know if I go .005, it'll be a ten thou cut?" Yes, I understand that Roland. Great mind for machining, we became good work friends, learned much but was stunned he didn't want any part of machining after he retired soon back then. Stunned.
Thank you for never giving up trying to teach us lunkheads! Always appreciated/always learning.

Another great video Mr Pete! I have a 1929, 9" South Bend lathe. Had over 50 years! Still not much wear considering age. I had to braze up 2 teeth in the back gear when I got it. After that it was really nice! Flat belts and jack shaft makes for cumbersome speed changes! Lol! Not used much any more as I have a 15" Clausing, 7.5 hp and 50" between centers. Made more money with the SB 9" but I've had it much longer. Might catch up one day but I doubt it! Thanks for your time and sharing! Morning coffee and Mr Pete vids, thanks!

I work for a company that manufactures IOLs (intraocular lenses). They are used for cataract surgery. I have heard you mention that you have cataracts several times. Have you ever thought of having new lenses implanted?

    • @paulmanson253
      @paulmanson253 Год назад

I have a manmade lens in my right eye. My vision from day one was measurably worse after than before. A lady in my building is blind in one eye because the lens replacement failed badly. My father ended up with two manmade lenses and was happy with the results. So end-user results vary widely. Traditional cataract surgery removed individual cataracts.
I can only hope the majority are happy with the results, but my own experience is so suboptimal I will have to be blind in my left eye before I ever allow the risk. There is a phrase that goes,be careful what you ask for you just might get it. If Mr. Pete can cope with what he has, that is better than being blind or having a fuzzy mess for an image, which is what my right eye delivers. Not being unpleasant to you,but there is always risk in any surgery.

Pete, it really bugs me that RUclips doesn't provide a "Name - Word" search function on each video. The reason I say this is I can't believe you uploaded this video a year ago without me seeing it or, yes commenting on it. I just know I have to be in there somewhere! On another note, there needs to be a video dealing with the compound removal. If those 2 steel plugs are gunked up it can make the compound removal a bear !
Oops! I forgot to say thanks for this video. The loosening of the slotted Apron screws is invaluable to know! It beats the hell out of removing it for this operation.

Lyle - Another great video. 'No wonder there's an oil shortage' - have to laugh as I oil my Heavy 10 the same way every time I use it. Was cutting threads yesterday so it got oiled - including all the small screw removals to make sure all surfaces are lubricated. Take a few minutes but is a 'Zen moment' LOL. It's a 1945 in good shape and I want to keep it that way. I'm about 7 years younger than you and understand the nice larger dials although I'm still able to use the old small ones. Now you can really confuse yourself with a direct reading cross slide and old style compound - at least I'm sure I'd mess it up but you are most likely more attentive than I am.

I think the thread relief serves the purpose of being an oil passage to the cross-feed screw. Note the sleeve has two holes for oil and it is doubtful they were drilled at assembly as Lyle postulated. The test would be to remove the oil plug screw on the cross-slide and add oil. If the oil can't go anywhere it would overflow instantly.
      Cheers from NC/USA

That's a beautiful little lathe. I haven't seen one with a tensioning feed clutch knob for a very long time. Does it have a bull pin to engage the back gears?
My method for cutting left hand acme threads is put the cutting tool upside-down and run the spindle in reverse. This allows the cuts to travel from the tailstock to the headstock and you won't have to machine an undercut for the thread. I made a few of them about a year ago for a defense project....don't forget to have calibrated thread ring gauges either.

Direct reading means that each graduation of the dial takes that amount from the diameter. Small diameter dials are usually calibrated for radius. (.010 on the dial removes .020 from the diameter.) With direct dials .010 on the dial removes .010 from the diameter.
