    The device on the smokestack was added later in it's life and is designed to keep smoke away from overhead wires for electric trains. Many steam locomotives were still in use during Spain's progress towards railway electrification, with steam and electric co-existing for a short time.

    Happy February 29th, Sam!
    I really like the look of this loco, especially with its curved cab. I might get one just because of the cab shape
    I've also seen a GWR version of this model
    8:20 I think that's a way to minimize the smoke or sparks
    9:30 These European couplers do work with British-style couplers without replacing either of them. I have a German coach and a British tender without NEM pockets, and they can couple easily if they have the giant loop

    The gold "thing" on the running board is a manual oiler. If the engine is not gonna run for some time, you take the cap off the top of the oilers and put some oil down them. This keeps the valve and piston lubricated and prevents rust+seizing.

    Having had a brief scroll through some of the comments, not many people seem to know exactly what the apparatus atop the chimney is.
    In short, In some places where electrification with overhead line equipment was prevalent, running a steam locomotive under the lines would be undesirable for obvious reasons. Normally most systems would not regularly permit steam engines along the electrified sections, but in some places - no doubt in Spain - said systems may have had a resident steam engine for whatever reason. On some occasions, these locomotives would be fitted with a deflector device much like the one on the engine in this video, which would generally coerce the exhaust away from the overhead line. I've also seen similar devices on a number of the ride-able Live steam locomotives to direct the exhaust away from the Driver's face.
    There was also an interesting Monorail/Bicycle railway system, which used such a deflector to direct the exhaust away from the wooden guide-rail above the vehicle.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      Duly noted William - many thanks for clearing that one up - that explains the strange shape of the device!

    The little piece at the top of the chimnei is a smoke-deflector. When you say that the loco was visitting UK I lauf for myself and thinck "If that loco goes visitting UK it will need to be on a «conflat» or eaither wise it will smash the sleepers" remember in Portugal and in Spain the gauge is 1688mm.

    There are some body kits of British industrial tank engines that use this electrotren chassis. So I would pick one up as a donor chassis.
    The odd V-shaped object on the chimney is to deflect the blast of the steam and smoke from the chimney as the engine worked in docks pulling wagons into and out of transit sheds. In Liverpool docks they used a simple metal disk which was mounted above the chimney and did the same job.

    The thing over the chimney looks a lot like a spark arrestor for stopping sparks from being shot up unto the air and down all over the dry Spanish country side, I imagine they used wood primarily as a fuel hence the spark arrestor? *Edit* I found this - Sharp Stewart 0-6-0ST - 'Baracaldo' Industrial type Locomotive with spark arrestor above the chimney. The prototype was built in Glasgow and exported to Spain.

    I’m glad to be back to the channel. You probably don’t recognise me anymore which I don’t mind, but still. I think I have a rather rare engine now since I rarely ever see it and the only one I can find is £85 but the price isn’t the thing I think of. When I see an engine, it’s about what connection I have or can make with it, that’s why the holyhead engine I have is so special. It was my granddads and he loved it with all his heart, which is why I want to complete it’s layout and let it run a life worthy of such a beast.
    Edit: do you have any locomotives that you can heavily connect to?

    You Spanish pronunciation is quite better than my English one, Sam. Electrotren builds great Spanish rolling stock and engines. It started here, in Spain , which was good for technical support and spare parts, but recently was purchased by Hornby. Since then trying to get spare parts is a gymkana... They build robust engines and it is a pleasure to watch them rolling on the layout, specially when the Loksound decoders are installed. You should try some Talgo enignes, as well as the electric class 277 (which was nicknamed as "Inglesa" (English)) here as they were built by English Electric, Vulcan Foundry and Westhinghouse. Our local railway museum owns one of them. This Baracaldo is a cheap and not detailed model. It is just a basic model for beginners.

    About mixing OO and HO: you can mix them if the HO is DC two rail, but there also is HO 3 rail AC rolling stock on the market by companies like Märklin. The AC locomotives need the 3rd rail for power and AC current, and the AC coaches and wagons cause a short on DC 2 rail, because the wheels on both sides are not electrically insulated from each other, as is the case with DC rolling stock.
    The HO 3 rail AC is very similar to the old Hornby Dublo system, but I don't know if those two are compatible. There might be a difference in voltage and in the frequency of the alternating current.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

    Good value. Maybe I would use it as a small dockside tank. At 3.5mm scale would probably look ok with some tipper trucks in a quarry setting too. Lots of 'modern' loco's seem to need tweaks with pick-ups - I sometimes use paper clip wire soldered to the main pickup set to give 'all wheel' collection.

    Nice little loco! Id say the thing on the funnel is a deflector of sorts and the brass whistle looking things on running board at front are most likely whats called (iirc) snifter valves, a device to stop vacuum in cylinders when coasting on closed or near a closed regulator, again iirc! Ive never had much to do with locos using these devices but i am aware of them.

    That device on the funnel looks similar to the blast deflectors on Southern Pacific locomotives. Those were used to stop the exhaust from damaging overhead snow sheds. Perhaps the Spanish line this ran on had something fragile over the line regularly, like snow sheds or tunnel lining.

    I like that. A lot. I'm interested in private branches, coal mines, and railway equipment used by the War Department on their huge munition stores, like the ones at Corsham, in Wiltshire. With the name removed and replaced with the 'WD' and Broad Arrow on the tank, and a new number, that would look superb pulling some 'Iron Mink' gunpowder wagons, or the rather sinister War Department Ammonia tanks that Hornby made several years ago. Or on a mine, dirtied up a treat, and hauling coal wagons.
    I think the thing on the funnel is a smoke and spark deflector.
    It's a lovely model, and well worth £50. If I still had the room in my house for a layout, then I'd have one. And a Smokey Joe.

    WOW 🤩 Excellent review of this fantastic model of the 0-6-0 saddle tank from Spain 🇪🇸 👍👍
    I have to admit the non-fantastic thing about the model is that the body is made in plastic as well no glass windows on the cab and it has a three pole motor. But I must say that the price of this model is excellent with £50 which is fantastic for beginners.
    I see you have bought a model of a GWR saddle tank in your collection and I look forward to see it in your next video Sam as I have plans to buy one in silver grey livery.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      Thanks very much Joe - really glad you liked it! Yes it's a shame about the plastic, but it's quite reasonable for the price!

    I remember seeing these in the model railway magazines when they were first introduced as On Tracks (now Golden Valley hobbies) were selling these in a GWR livery and they got reasonably good reviews. Golden Valley hobbies also has another steam locomotive which is a European loco for sale currently at £47.50.

    Could be a very good loco for use on British layouts, mines and steel works, docks, etc, the cab is very similar to early Pre - Grouping locos used on the various South wales railway companies, even some taken into GWR stock when the GWR took control of these.. some lasting into BR days !!
