  • In this week’s woodturning video, Harry and I have an awkwardly shaped off-cut of sweet gum laying around. This was likely cut off a larger blank and Harry never got around to eating it. So, lets turn it into something quick and easy to serve human food off of!
    This is about as easy as you can get. Take the large piece, and mount it on the lathe. Then flatten the end grain face, make a small tenon and flatten the other side. That’s it!

    ...oh, let Harry eat it...I could watch a beaver make hard wood disappear all day...😨
    Ok...it's different...but it wasted as little wood as possible and shows off all that gorgeous grain...I like it...👍

    Robert, Beautiful piece of wood buddy QQ what thickness did you have when felt the vacuum, just interested

    • @HodgePodgeWoodWorks
      @HodgePodgeWoodWorks  Год назад

      It was still about an inch thick. I was definitely surprised when I felt it. At first I was like why is this sanding dust not wiping off!

  • @Nikonguy73
    @Nikonguy73 Год назад +2

    You could have put that through a thickneser for that flat piece

      If you're referring to a drum sander you're correct. Too bad I don't have one. Good luck if you want to put that through a planer.

      @@HodgePodgeWoodWorks could you let me know why good luck? I pretty new to this topic. Could you let me know what would go wrong.

      @@dkmutube3314 I literally have no idea why this video is doing so well. Total surprise to me.

      @@dkmutube3314 generally to go through a thickness planer, you want the piece to be a little bit longer than the distance between the two rollers inside. Also, if the piece has wonky grain, such as a burl, you’re probably going to get some tear out if your blades aren’t as sharp as possible. Having a helical cutter head would eliminate this, though. There’s ways around both of these problems, just by building a sled with some extra pieces both in front and behind the piece to take up space, so I’m really not sure why he said “good luck if you want to put that through a planer.” I’m guessing he’s not that familiar with using thickness planers.

      @@HodgePodgeWoodWorks not sure why you would say “good luck if you want to put that through a planer.” to the other commenter.
      If it’s the size of the piece that you’re referencing, you can just place some sacrificial pieces both in front and behind the piece to account for the distance of the rollers (this would also take care of any snipe you may get). Or, if it’s tear out that you’re referencing, a spiral cutter head or helical cutter head would minimize that. If you don’t have a spiral cutter head or helical cutter head in your planer, just make sure you have new sharp knives, take light passes, and you’ll probably be just fine, even with wonky grain pieces.
