    Elton - Brilliant Genius

This was near the height of Elton's drug and alcohol dependency days, he probably doesn't have a clue of what he's even saying here. As he later said, "I was a pig," at that time. Thankfully he got himself clean and sober in 1991 and, according to him, has been ever since.

True. But what he says is correct. They have never collaborated. Bernie gives Elton lyrics, and Elton puts music to them. They don’t write together.

It is interesting that, despite them never having written in the same room together ever on a song, they can still come up with really great songs. The title, though, is a bit misleading. It's giving the impression that he's bashing Bernie but he's not.

    • @JamesDeWeaver

that was not the intent, although Elton doesn't speak too highly in the beginning of this interview of Bernie either.

brothers don't always tend to see eye to eye, Elton & Bernie have also had their disagreements in that time period as well, I wasn't bagging either but to think these two never had a spat would not be believable JohnWesley Downey

This is stupid. The way Elton and Bernie wrote songs was well publicized from the very beginning of their career. There's nothing new here. They wrote hundred of songs, with Bernie finishing a lyric, then giving it to Elton to set to music. There's NEVER been any publicity indicating they wrote them in the same room as collaborators.

@@nodangles6983 It's not that...the headline implies that Bernie writing the lyrics was false, and here Elton admits it. Instead it's the same thing he and they have always said. How many people are going to read the headline and think Bernie Taupin is a fraud?

Elton's melodies attracted me to Bernies Lyrics. The lyrics and melody are both the same side of the coin and make a beautiful combination.
I disagree with Elton that if the lyrical content of a song is good I would buy it if even the melody was crap.
Elton must be inspired by Bernie to write these wonderful melodies, they say Elton can put a tune to anything, but clearly Bernie's lyrics brings out the absolute best in Elton's talent.
Time Rice did came a close second with "Can you feel the Love tonight". I could have sworn those Lyrics came from Bernies pen...

So glad Elton said that he thought this fella was wrong and disagreed with him.....If we look at ALL the GREAT bands and solo-artists, the revered and the respected, the iconic and the legendary, from the 60's right through to our modern day, all these artists have written very emotive, and meaningful, and heartfelt lyrics, and they've told such emotive stories, and they've inspired us culturally, urging us to observe ourselves and our society.... To be a great 'songwriter', the songwriter doesn't even need to be able to sing, or play their instrument well, they just need to be able to communicate feeling....just look at Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Johnny Rotten, Leonard Cohen etc... these excellent songwriters couldn't sing to save their lives, but people didn't care because their words resonated with people....if we look at, for example, pop groups, boy bands, and these pop solo 'artists', if we're honest, many of the melodies are excellent - it hurt to write that - and many have great voices, so what is it that makes us struggle to take their songs seriously, even if, and it's a rarity, even if they write the songs themselves, like Gary Barlow for Take That....it's their lyrics... when I was 11 years old, in the late 80's, and I bought a copy of 'Appetite For Destruction' on cassette tape from Woolworths, what captured and excited me was the combination of the sheer energy with the genuine story-telling lyrics with the melodies....but if the energy and melodies stayed the same but Axl's and Izzy's lyrics were swapped, say, for example, for Bon Jovi lyrics, would AFD have had an impact....believe it wouldn't...it was the authenticity and the honesty in the songs that elevated it, and came through the lyrics.... Elton and Bernie were meant to be

I think there is this weird thing where people who are musicians and musically inclined tend to focus more on the total sound package and the melody, rhythm, progressions and such, and then people who are not really musically inclined in terms of playing or deconstructing music in their head, they tend to really put more focus on the lyrics and the meanings of the words. It's a strange thing because musicians have to deal with this disconnect and make sure they are not neglecting the lyrics, since many of their potential listeners will notice weak lyrics pretty quickly and not like the music as much because of it.

I agree with John here, he has that mark of a truly talented artist because he recognizes that not all of his listeners or other people in the world are going to see music the same exact way as him.
