As a Japanese motorcycle enthusiast, the fact that these Japanese dual-sport bikes can still be purchased new in the U.S. today is very surprising.
Strict exhaust emission regulations in Japan have put these great bikes off the market decades ago.
I envy all the American motorcyclists out there!
We can thank countries like Malaysia and Venezuela!
US exhaust regulations are pretty strict as well, however, old designs can generally be grandfathered in as long as manufacturers sell enough bikes with new compliant engines. The only reason these TDubs and KLRs and Suzuki DRs are still made for the US is because they're purposely left unchanged from 20+ years ago.
If they gave them new engines, they'd have to be new designs that are emissions compliant to today, which is basically impossible.
I'm curious if Kawasaki got away with using the old engine on the new KLR and just added fuel injection, or if they had to completely overhaul the engine when they reintroduced it

We should learn more from each other, correct ?
Should had never took off the kick start off the TW200 in my opinion Should had left both especially for 10 below
My wife has a 2020 TW200 and I have a 2018 XT250 and an 08 DR650. All great bikes and fun to ride! I have a full Cogent suspension on my DR which completely transformed the bike and it's now my tourer. The XT is a super agile bike that has a geometry that's practically a Trials bike.
The red bit on the TW speedometer actually isn't the redline even though it certainly feels like it is. When it came out in the 80s the speed limit everywhere was basically 55mph so it is more of a reminder that you're reaching the legal limit. So I'm told anyway....
Yep. Silly times.
We had TWs as an option at my rider’s course for a reason. Durable, nimble, approachable and (relatively) inexpensive. I’ve wanted one of my own ever since.
I love how the KLR650 looks like a candle light headlight it's so dark
Where the hell are you getting bikes for a couple 100 bucks
Great comparison. I have a Suzuki DR650 which is very similar to the Kaw 650 that Kase rode. Love the bike, it's absolutely bullet-proof and comfortable to ride for day-long trips. A little heavy but still very doable in the dirt. Picking up the Suzuki 650 after you drop it 😮💨 is so so much easier than my BMW 1150 adventure bike 😢.
I have a DR650 also and it's been a great bike the past five years for me and I've farkled it up quite a bit. I bought it with 29k miles on it and now I have about 35k on it. There are a few out there just below and beyond the 100k mile mark with the original engine. When set up properly it's actually a really fun travel bike.
yamaha bikes you cannot buy new replacement parts for bikes over 20 years only honda you can, honda is the only way to go when it comes to enduros/dirtbikes/motorcycles japanese stuff.
As a BMW R1150 GS ADV owner (and a T-Dub owner), I can vouch for that. You can achieve about 4-5 pickups of the BMW adventure beast per day before total exhaustion. Each have their merits, hence I own both.
@@billybobbob3003 except they're still building brand-new 2023 TW200's today.
@@rubicon4wheeler still trash next to honda
2 time owner of gen 1 KLR's. I had an 87 and and currently an 01. It is an unstoppable bike and super easy to work on. Y'all should keep the KLR'er and fix it up nicely.
That exhaust guard is an aftermarket part to protect soft saddle bags that are thrown over the seat and strapped down. It not need unless you have the saddlebags on the bike.
I love the simplicity and weight of the TW200. That was the bike I used to take my MSF course. The KLR is more like a light adventure bike. Both of those, the DR650 and the DRZ400 are reliable old school dual sports that are a good value used but hard to justify new when compared to the much more modern offerings.
Well, part of why they are still desirable is the fact that they are just tried and true bulletproof designs. They leave off the tech and computers and stuff that can fail on the fancier bikes. There's a reason that the Toyota 4Runner is still one of the most popular SUVs, when it's easily the oldest, most simple, analog SUV design left on the market alongside the Jeep Wrangler
I have a soft saddle bag, with a 30 liter capacity, and extended the exhaust guard just to be safe.
Over the rear fender and both sides are padlocked upon mount where rear foot pegs had been.
After adding about 4 feet of half-inch nylon sheathed cable through bag side to side, Exterior of
bag has carry also for 10.2 oz Counter-Assault bear pepper spray, Glock 20, and 2-piece rain gear.
Two great bikes. The fact they are still available today says a lot. The KLR has changed but not much. There was always the “Doohickey” with the KLR, but once changed it’s fine! There are so many big bore kits out there for the KLR, even TW200 as well, if you need more power. They are not high performance bikes mind you,, 😂😂.
I have had both. The TW200 for changing irrigation pipes and getting access to the wheel move irrigation lines. It’s a great bike for that kind of farm work. The KLR is even decent for chasing cattle! It’s fast enough to keep you safe and you can really hammer out the KLR. I have experience with the original and second gen KLR and definitely prefer the 2nd Gen bike. I actually did a lot of highway commuting with 15 miles of gravel at the beginning/end of the commute depending on which way you were going. It’s was perfect for this!! Even when we got rain! It’s a wet bike to ride in the rain of course, but it’s not too bad in the mud for a slightly heavy dirt bike. I’m only 5’8” tall so the KLR is a bit of a stretch, but easily rideable still.
Maybe I need another bike,,, 22 or newer KLR 650??? They even have a KLR650 S for us shorter fellas!! 😂😂. Even with the new cladding on the current bike you can still see a lot of the original design in the current version!! Yep,,, gotta see what’s out there. I still have a 1992 TW200 so I’m up to date there!!! 😂😂😂.
I am often reminded of the similarities between these two bikes.
I spent eight years on a 2014 TW200. For the last nine months or so, I’ve had a Gen3 KLR. Two of my very favorites. Guess I have a type.
SWEET! KLR's rock! Albeit it, this 650 in this condition and the price are a bit baffling. I had the same year, only it was the 250 and it is FAR more comparable to that TW200. (sold mine 10 years later for nearly the price of new, highly sought after)And I think you 2 would like the 99 KLR250 even more. Good make and model, wrong size for the comparison lol But it is cool you showed the viewers a KLR. 🙂 It would be cool if you could get your hands on a KLX300 and review that.(replaced the 250KLR)
Great video. I have two KLRs and a DR-Z400SM. I've been looking to get a TW200 for the past few months but without any luck, but hopefully soon. There's just something about these old (technologically speaking) bikes that I just like. If something works and is reliable, it doesn't need to change with the times (although I am glad that Yamaha added a front disc brake, I am kinda bummed that they removed the kick starter - I think it'd be fun to have at least one bike with one of those).
Kick starters can be added.
The 650 on trails is like trying to drive a bus 😂 Mine was good on the road except for being to tall. Great suspension though. Pot holes no longer exist.
i love my klr i’ve done a lot of stuff to it bc it looked super 80’s but it’s still got the same bones😂 awesome riding bike and was a perfect beginner bike for me and even after having it for so long, i want a dual sport with more power but my klr keeps drawing me back.
I have a hawk 250 Enduro I have to rebuild and have been replacing things because I had 3 accidents thankfully I wasn’t injured to bad. My last and final accident I was doing 55 on a bumpy Chicago streets. I want a TW200 with the ability to mod a few things for extra HP that’s more durable. My hawk 250 got me through 90 degree days but it definitely felt like a death trap I had to repair a lot of things especially the leaking gas tank 😖
I've got a new Gen 3 KLR and I absolutely love the thing. The Gen 1 is a favorite of mine though
I absolutely love my TW200! If Yamamaha ever decided to produce a TW450 I would buy one TODAY.
I’m gonna go out to the garage and tell my Xr650 they she’s still the best. She needs to hear it sometimes.
Honda xr650l
Leaving the Honda XR 650L out of the "Iconic" And "Durable" bikes is crazy. Hell it started all this.
Remember the XL350. Always wanted one.
I love this channel. Thank you!
Great content unfortunately no Honda xr650
Fun bikes. Love the TW. Hope to have a KLR some day. And the DRZ. I do some trail riding around here that the TW clearance isn't quite enough, but there is no way I'd dare do it on a KLR or anything else big and heavy like that. A recipe for going over the cliff. I'd instead enjoy some other places and probably stick to ATV and double track / dirt roads.
Good to see the Suzuki drz400 come out on top yet again.
I’m sure I’m going to make a lot of people mad, but I don’t care. I bought a new Yamaha XT225. 2007 model. Granted it wasn’t a TW but very close. I put 33,000 miles on that bike. Then I bought a Kawasaki KLR650. I put 26,000 miles on that. I’ve owned a lot of motorcycles. That Yamaha was the best bike I’ve ever owned. That KLR was the biggest piece of junk I’ve ever owned. When I sold the KLR I sold it cheap, and even at that felt guilty bragging it up to the guy that bought it. I could only live with myself, because I sold it so cheap.
I used to have a XT 200 , same engine as the TW . Biggest mistake ever. Problem after problem...goes both ways
@@mariomulder3153. Well then I wouldn’t want a TW200. I’ve watched a lot of videos on the TW200 trying to find somebody that has put serious miles on one. I can’t seem to find any. I think 26,000 is the most yet, and I don’t consider that seriously high miles. I put 16,000 on my XT225 in the first 10 months. 3300 of that was deep inside Mexico. But, I didn’t beat the snot out of the engine either.
What we really need is a middle ground. Basically looking for a TW with just a touch more power and an extra gear... Say a TW300. Lacking that however I would still love a TW200.
The guy with the white jacket talks exactly like FortNine, he could have his own TV channel the way he presents himself 🤘
Great video Gents. I enjoy your work.
Hell yes! This made my morning.
Y'ALL GONE HIT EACH OTHER!!!! WATCH OUT!
I’ve been waiting for this comparison for years
KLR is bullet proof except when it's clapped out. Also the doohickey, that definitely needs to be fixed if it hasn't. I have a DR-Z400E which in the USA means off road only electric start. It has the pumper carb and maybe a bigger head pipe. I made it street legal but it still feels illegal to ride it on the street!
everyone love my old gen 1😊 glad y’all like it!!
👏👏👏 ALEX had a good launch ........good video guys 🙏 .... HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY EVERYONE ✌️
I'd go with a DR 650.
I think a RE Himalayan would be a good comparison to either of these.
I had a (90?) Yamaha XT 600 E back in the day. Great bike for blasting around town. So easy to do wheelies too! It had an obnoxiously loud aftermarket slip-on pipe, that would wake up the dead!
I daily a 600e, hate the carb drama but love the bike. Cheap maintenance and will run forever
Dang I would take either ! I loved my super cub but I need something off-road worthy and want to size up from 125cc
Yah the KLR is a thumper. Heavy alright, i dropped mine on my foot in soft sand on a beach. A good road / trail bike.
You have described what quite possibly is the opposite of a Humvee
If you revert back to the OEM gas tank you should put a Waypoint Adventure Products Dakar Fairing.
You are correct, you need to compare the DRZ with each of them. It may be a perfect 'tweener'.
Hey is there any way you could tell me the size of the front tire on your tw200
Are you guys getting it figured out ??
TW is a farm implement and should be good in the snow as it basically has an ATV tire on the rear. They are slow on the street to get to the trails though so stay off roads that are over 50MPH. We had two but sold them as they beat the hell out of you off road due to the soft short travel suspensions. I will only go FI anymore as the carbs constantly get dirty if not ridden ever week.
Same, I absolutely hate carbs.
Sorry it should be DR650 versus TW200. No liquid-cooled and fuel injected bike is ever considered to be a reliable choice.
How do you not mention XT 250 when talking about legendary bikes? It slots nicely in between these two as well.
KLR is a good bike but I'd rather the DR650. Did the first gen KLR have 6 speeds?
Yes they were 6 speeds.
@@WW-wf8tu Thanks
The DR650 is a great bike but I'd rather the Tenere-700.
@@durtyred86 The T7 is a great bike. My son has one but I'd rather the DR because I am not going to be doing 3k mile trips on it and it weighs about 120 lbs less.
@@WW-wf8tu wrong, they're 5 speed
What gear you all wear in that cold? My cold weather gear is lacking. I layer up but then it gets to bulky
How's the climbing on the KLR?
Commenting without even watching the video I hope this is funny and I think it's going to be. These bikes are at both sides of the spectrum of dual sports.
LOL, compare the KLR to the DR650. Why a 200cc.
Clapped out count =23. I guess that means wore out?
Yeah, beat up, rode hard and not maintained, etc.
TW200
The GP is like a "Fiatbusa", that I would ❤️❤️❤️ 🤣. But that I could fit in. But like a bike has sequential 💪😆❤️😈
I would take the TW200 over the KLR650 any day.
A loose kick stand maybe
Humvee? Really?
KLR is a man sized bike. Grow a 36" inseam and it's just right.
DR650, no radiator...better durability wise
These two bikes are nothing alike. The KLR can cruise comfortably on the freeway and it's 400c.i. larger. The TW is a foo-foo camper bike. Not much to compare here.
Won`t buy a KLR again doo to the doohickey!
Had a 200 slower than ketchup it's air-cooled valve chattering slug , weak power band , not interstate friendly &:a 89XT 600 yamahaha" air cooled crap" lighter more dirt oriented than 650"s which are pigs on a dirt track, I'm 6'2 250lb plenty strong to throw around a big bore on a tight track" but the Honda big bore not a fan boy" was a cant kill beast like the ol " Z50 & CR500, & IT 490 if you could get one road legal, I'll take a Maico 700 Enduro 2 stroke braaap" but I don't live in the UK, wish I still had my 78/ 82 250's burrrt" that tw/ klr or two different animals for any kind of comparison just get a KTM XC 300 two-stroke street legal and you'll be plenty happy but get your checkbook ready
Suzuki DR200 way better
Tw200 is a girl's bike. Good to buy for your daughter sister or wife. KLR650 is for men
Could you point to the part of the motorcycle that is operated with your genitals? Or are you just perpetuating sexist stereotypes?
Have you ever ridden a TW? I dare you to take a KLR to the same places that little yamaha goes. Also, I know women that can take a 990 Adv where many men cant take a dirtbike...) calm down man, they're only machines (:
@@marsrover001 what are you talkin about? Every part of a man's body is better at functioning than a female's body. From his eyes to his muscles his nerves his lungs. If you're a female you should be very careful on a motorcycle because you are very inferior to men
@@milaventurasprod I have to two W's and a few klrc. My grandfather has a couple airplane hangars and 15 garages full of motorcycles

Sell it. Someone would fix it up.
On looks alone, I like the Yamaha.
