As a truck driver thank you for that comment because what this video fails to show are the number of people in regular vehicles that text and drive and swerve all over the road and causing the driver to counter steer to avoid hitting the vehicle which causes the truck driver to either to hit someone beside them or run off the roadway causing a accident and in some cases the person texting in a regular automoblie side swipes the truck also causing a multiple vehicle accident I just love how the news can be so one-sided.

@bloba4443 Where this is a true statement and as a truck driver I agree with you. A person in a regular vehicle that is texting and driving swerving all over the highway if they hit the front tire of a semi and the tire blows out from a car hitting it can cause the truck driver to lose control and flip also causing a major pile up or catastrophe as well and it has happened but the news dont want report when that happens .

I don't agree with that. Wouldn't you want to be able to answer a call from a friend or loved one who may be in trouble? You could always pull over to continue the call. No one's going to keep me from accepting what could be a life or death phone call. Not only that, but I know I have had times when I'm meeting someone and I've found the parking lot, but not exactly where that person is parked or where they may be standing.
In fact, the more I read your response, the stupider it sounds. People should still be able to call someone else to say, "Hey, my meeting ran late at work. I'll just meet you guys at the place." -OR- "We have reservations for our anniversary. We're on our way there but stuck in traffic. Can you please hold our table?" -OR- "Please ask the Murphys if you can ride back with them because I've hit a detour. It's slow-moving and really out of the way. I don't want you waiting alone in the dark." -OR- "Oh my gosh, honey. I got all the way here and realized I left our tickets on the dresser. The show starts in 20 minutes. Can you please bring them to us?" I could go on and on. Scenarios like this and ones with even more dire consequences happen without notice. I need to be able to communicate in cases like these and so do others. People just need to be more conscientious and more responsible. It's as simple as that.

I've been saying something like this for years.
In your travel time, seeing a cop usually is minimal. Most people easily get away with using their phones.
I think phone providers should take advantage of that GPS tech, and hit their customers with fines, on their phone bill for phone usage while moving in a vehicle.
Obviously somehow a patch would be needed to exclude the passengers, but it's literally fool proof.

As a professional driver I’ll tell you first hand, I see a good bit of commercial drivers of all sorts on their phones. Truck drivers should be the examples of the highway because we are the professionals, and there should be more realistic and strenuous training through these driving institutions to teach these people behind the wheel of a tractor trailer how to be a professional driver and operator and not just a steering wheel holder. Saying all that I see more negligence and just plain disregard from people in cars and pickups of all sizes talking and texting on their phones, cutting trucks off, pulling out in front of them, and the worst of all just dying to pass only to get up the road a short distance and turn off (most of time it’s left) witch cause these very same incidents if not worse. Most people behind the wheel of a four wheeler have absolutely no respect for the highway much less a tractor trailer or a commercial truck of any size. When your driving whether it be a bicycle or a 80,000lbs 70’ long average size tractor trailer (some are MUCH heavier and longer BTW) your complete and undivided attention needs to be on the road at all times, if it is driving around these massive trucks would be so much more peaceful for everyone. People need to wake up and stop blaming everything on the trucks and realize all you need is a little patients and a lot of respect for not only the truck driver but for theirselves and all the people around them.

also, most of the "truckers" caught on this video are not even real truck drivers, they are in baby buggies (box trucks).

    • @kylierivera1763
      @kylierivera1763 8 лет назад +11

It's not a trucker problem. It's a problem for everyone because people are so attached to their phones. I knew a police officer who was killed on the highway because a trucker was busy watching a video on his phone. If you are on your phone then you are not driving. It's dangerous and stupid and I wish people would just drive instead of risking other people's lives for their selfish needs while driving. You can live without a phone for a while. If you can't, then pull over and use it. You can't live with yourself knowing you took a life because of your phone. No matter how much you want to, you can't take back what you did. A persons life is not worth a text or a picture or a video or checking social media.

JoePJack1 if you have a CDL and you drive a box truck and work for a company full of big rigs and box trucks, that disqualifies you from being a "trucker" simply because of the size of your truck or having a B license rather than an A? That makes absolutely zero sense. I wasn't saying every person that jumps in a U-haul or a rental van is a trucker. Those trucks don't have air brakes, and even if they do, their GVWR is under 26,001, so a CDL is not needed for driving.

Most shown here are not Big Trucks. They are little 6-wheelers. Most of us Big Truck drivers don't mess with the phones in thick traffic and usually we're on the CB rather than phone. Most of us used headsets also. I don't drive truck anymore but I still use my Blue Parrot bluetooth headset. If ever you see someone wearing a bluetooth headset, it's about 99.9999% positive it's a Big Truck driver.
This story is out of New York and reminds me of something I used to do. I would be driving the New York State Thruway and stop at the service areas to buy a big waffle ice cream cone. I could get in the truck, belt up, start up, disengage the brakes, and get on down the road safely. This was in stick-shift trucks too. I know that sounds scary but I assure you, if anything were to go down, that cone would be on the floor. Ironically, I would never attempt this in my personal car which is an automatic.
To someone that really pays attention, being in a Big Truck with all of those mirrors feels much safer than being in a car.

I have even done it to a California Highway Patrol that almost swerved into me, we actually ended up pulling over and he wasnt too happy i called him out at first. By the end of our conversation we were laughing together and before he left he thanked me for pointing out his mistake.

My dispatcher was always contacting me through that monitor. I would have to use the keyboard to communicate to him, WHILE I WAS DRVING! I could not pull over to stop because it would mess up my log book where I would have to write in it, On Duty Not Driving which burnt up my legal driving time which was typically 10 hours. Georgia had a law that prohibits texting while driving since 7/1/2010 but the law didn't have alot of effect. Georgia passed the hands-free law on 3/29/2018. Ex governor, Nathan Deal signed the bill on 5/2/2018 and the law went into effect on July 1, 2018. The law states that you cannot hold your phone up to your ear to talk, have the phone in your lap, or hold it against your ear with your shoulder. Drivers can make or receive calls by using speakerphone, bluetooth system in vehicle, smartwatch, or earpiece. They can also use earbuds but only can use 1 because they need to hear surrounding traffic and emergency vehicle sirens.

As a truck driver, I’d say more than 90% of the motoring public have their hands on the phones at any given time. Whether it’s talking, texting, or watching something. While trucks are more “high profile” you really need to address the entire population. Technology needs to vamp up and disable all cell phones in a vehicle once that vehicle is in motion. Once stopped, proper use may be used once again until the vehicle goes in motion.

It is so unnerving, I do not wish to be anywhere near texting drivers, yet find myself sandwiched between them, it goes on everywhere. Hopefully, there will be better CCTV aimed at roads and pick up all these idiots.
