  • Cornell was homeless on the streets of Skid Row for over a decade. Also known as Smiley, many of you fell in love with Cornell's positive attitude as he wished people "Happy Monday" • Happy Monday: Life on ...

    After a decade of homelessness, Cornell is now living in a hotel room provided by Inside Safe, a pioneering program led by Los Angeles Mayor Bass, designed to alleviate the city's chronic homelessness crisis.
    Inside Safe provides temporary shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness, providing them with hotel rooms equipped with essential amenities. This initiative aims to provide immediate relief in the form of a safe space to live and restores a degree of dignity often lost in the struggle for survival on the streets. Despite facing significant challenges such as funding limitations and the need for scalable solutions, Inside Safe is a tangible lifeline for marginalized individuals, offering a stepping stone towards stability and a potential pathway out of homelessness. Its impact, as seen through a modest yet profound change of participants like Cornell, underscores its value in the broader context of homelessness relief strategies.
    Soma Snakeoil runs The Sidewalk Project, a nonprofit organization striving to provide harm reduction services. Despite the overwhelming need in the community, Soma's unwavering commitment led her to facilitate Cornell's involvement in the Inside Safe program, a pivotal turning point in his life. About Invisible People
    There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
    We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
    This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
    However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

    People have so much hate and no sympathy for homeless. I look at folks that do and I tell them "well I hope you never have to be in the situation. Not everyone has support or choice. Even with the best job and insurance. You could still lose everything in a minute. So have sympathy for those that have lost it all."

      @JulieSevelson-nb9nj 11 месяцев назад +2

      Yup ! There's a much hated stereotype out there,a ' one size fits all ' as in some bearded guy on a bike, carrying alcohol, drugs,a criminal record, and causing all kinds of trouble in a neighborhood. But, there's also the ' hidden homeless,' who are seniors, disabled people, veterans and families. The homeless in THIS category don't have records, aren't addicts, have pensions or jobs. Their only ' crime ' is, they no longer can afford market rates when trying to rent !! That's all. It's been this way, since 1980, it showed up in the big cities first, and spread out all over America. Normal countries don't have huge populations of homeless citizens !! Third World countries sure do. The ONLY way to end homelessness forever, is to launch a massive building campaign nationwide. And bring back good jobs and manufacturing while we're at it.🤩💪🇺🇲

      Good idea, and homeless people need to start becoming active in lobbying for more affordable housing to be built, that's the greatest driver of homelessness. There's always been drugs, dealers,alcoholics, but until the year 1980,in Southern California, people did these dysfunctions indoors because rents were abundant and cheap. Apartments stopped getting built by that same year,1980. And at the same time, lots of people were both being born,and immigrating here- but housing wasn't built to keep up with the surging population. So a severe housing shortage was launched,yet leaders and politicians were in denial regarding homelessness being a crisis,or even abnormal. Until around 2020, no real attempt was made to even try ! Measure H,and HHH were just used as props that mouthed " promises" of housing getting built,under Eric Garcetti ( good riddance). 17 billion dollars thrown at supposed construction of affordable apartments- where the heck is that 💰💰💰💰 money ?? It's way overdue for a bipartisan forensic audit, for all homeless funds and how they were distributed ( diverted).😮

    I'm happy he got off the streets. Ok I'm officially blown away. That Social worker said a person she wants to find was handed and explosive and it blew off her hand! So now she needs wound care. I'm like really life on the streets in 2023 is so bad we have people passing out explosives like gum drops. What is instantly more shocking is the social worker driving her car so causally related her client being handed a bomb like it was another day at the office. I find it horrific \ shocking that someone living on the streets gets handed an explosive and it blows their hand off being treated like it's nothing. That is enough to outrage even this jaded wolf. I don't usually like these harm reduction people but in this instance I owe her a thank you for being there!

      Yes,and most homeless people did have places they rented,even owned at on time. That damned foreclosure crisis caused many suicides among those who couldn't pay their mortgages anymore,I remember that. They entered an already crowded rental market. So many lives were ruined ! We can't arrest our way out of homelessness, but we sure can build our way out of this, if the funds for building affordable housing aren't stolen anymore !

    Mayor Bass refuses to remove those who live inside Metro train/subway cars. When interviewed about it, she dodged the question and said that Metro is looking to see what land it can donate or sell to build housing. Huh? What does that have to do with it? If squatters were tolerated at a business, that business must later build apartments for the squatters?

    • @JulieSevelson-nb9nj
      @JulieSevelson-nb9nj 11 месяцев назад +2

      I have to ride that Metro train system almost daily. I saw an assault down on the Red Line platform at Union Station last week. When riding I'm always on guard and stay close to the police when I see them. Walking the gantlet,that's what I call it ! Now, it would make sense to investigate the situation of every homeless person on those trains, and separate the mentally ill, the thugs, and just homeless people who simply can't afford to rent( thanks to insane prices) and place them according to those categories where they need to be. It would be more cost effective to do that, instead of the liability that goes with the status quo, which obviously does NOT work,lol ! There IS money for residential facilities for mental patients, thugs in rehab or jail, depending on their records, and for the people who need just housing, build that housing that the state already gave them- 17 billion dollars,as I recall hearing on the radio recently. Homeless people can't simply be dumped into the street from the trains, because that's dangerous for society. Average citizens must demand that politicians do THIS,soon.

    Unfortunately the housing first philosophy will only work if there are ancillary support programs already in place. Unhoused people will continue to fail most of the criteria unless the underlying problem is addressed. 😢

    • @JulieSevelson-nb9nj
      @JulieSevelson-nb9nj 11 месяцев назад +1

      This certainly applies to people who have addiction issues, or are mentally ill. But there's another side to this- many ' hidden homeless' simply need affordable housing built ! By this, I mean seniors, disabled people, veterans,and working class renters. Renting USED to be very easy to do. You had one basic form to fill out,and cash,check, or money order- and you were in. Now so many laws have changed, and keep potential tenants from renting, like credit histories, or the income- to - rent ratio isn't high enough- thanks to these astronomic prices. If enough housing is built, and good jobs return, homelessness will be eliminated. The problem is this Homeless Industrial Complex, which is designed to keep you homeless,if you ARE homeless ! Until 2020,it was business as usual. And lots of deaths. 💀👀

    It would really be helpful to learn of the incident that actually caused Cornell's homelessness. We want to stop this matter at its source. Is he a "native" Californian or did he just come homeless from somewhere else due to the better So. Cal. weather, like millions of other have?

    This is an amazing thing, lets hope the rest of the states follow suit!. Whats really annoying is, the UK where im from prefer hosting immigrants who come over on boats than their own homeless or vets living on the streets. Paying for illegals to stay in hotels at the tax payers cost. I wouldnt mind paying for it, if it were our own homeless and vets.

    • @JulieSevelson-nb9nj
      @JulieSevelson-nb9nj 11 месяцев назад +2

      You're absolutely right, c2wak !! The same thing has been in place since 1980. People have wondered how this was being done,and who's policy was behind it. Veterans are routinely turned down when applying for housing, yet if you're from a ' protected class,' the red carpet is rolled out for you ! I'm not against benefits for immigrants, as long as it's all equally for everyone. I read that there are investors in flats there in Britain that keep their apartments empty, because it profits them to do so. Tax shelters, maybe. And that Margaret Thatcher started the trend to shave down affordable housing there in the UK.

    So to solve the problem that stems from not enough established resources, workers, and permanent housing - LA's solution is to spend 100 million dollars on hotels for a tiny fraction for a small amount of time? Greeeaaatttt.

    • @JulieSevelson-nb9nj
      @JulieSevelson-nb9nj 11 месяцев назад +1

      It's harebrained to only use hotels,and not use those funds for building affordable housing,as lots of seniors, disabled people, and veterans are desperate for an apartment. The hotels are meant to be temporary. It's a start, and all funds must be audited and accounted for. Because in the past under Garcetti,and previous mayor's, billions went missing !

  • @IbHustln
    @IbHustln 11 месяцев назад +2

    Why can they not just put a bunch of teepees on a piece of land outside of the city with facilities to shower and buildings with access to computers so they can attempt to get their lives back together? This housing them temporarily in hotels does not seem sustainable...

    • @zerozone3968
      @zerozone3968 11 месяцев назад +1

      It seems like you have a good idea but the problem is that solution would require homeless to be civil with each other and be fair with the facilities uses. Otherwise someone can just break a facility and everyone loses that privilege. To prevent and maintain facilities it would require manpower, which isn’t easy to get. But at a hotel they already have a staff in place who are trained and have taken care of these rooms before. I’m not an expert, nor do I have any experience with homelessness but I believe that your solution would be a band aid while this solution is a splint. It may not solve the issue but it’s a start to building something more sustainable.

      The problem is that for 42 years, homelessness and housing needs have been ignored. People turned a blind eye,and simply had that Darwinism attitude about those who can't afford to rent. Neoliberals. But now the whole world 🌎 knows about this American disgrace, so in some areas, the authorities were shamed into finally doing something. This includes Los Angeles County,and I'm glad to see this, if it's done correctly. No corruption, no bribes, and all funding uses need auditing from outside the County. Much of this housing grants and budgets actually have been stolen ! Citizens need to demand an account. City Council meetings are a great way to do that.

      Wow, that's terrible! Can you get emergency housing voucher for your mother ? Thank you for alerting renters about those bad companies that abuse tenants !! People often wind up homeless because of dirty deeds by owners and property management. Document everything,take pictures, call Legal Aid,if you haven't already. If you're a good tenant,that's not enough anymore. No- fault evictions should be illegal nationwide. We have those in California,that must go. And the Costa- Hawkins Act. Another homeless trigger.

    Our government gives billions of taxed dollars to foriegn countries.
    Our cities spend millions of taxed dollars on civic buildings, museums, parks, neighborhoods, roads, bridges, animal adoption centers, etc.
    The government and cities should built sleeping night shelters (Chinese style pods are fine) with showers and toilets availability.
    Our soldiers should oversee these facilities, if they can safeguard foreigners in their countries they can help homeless Americans.
    All churches in America should feed the hungry.
    We pay plenty of taxes. Government officials are mismanaging them.
    Every American deserves a safe place to sleep, shower,and toilet use.

    The problem will continue as long as California takes on the world's population of needy and poor. When the State keeps saying it's all about affordable or in this case free housing, the forget that they keep the boarders open as a "sanctuary state". California has 40 million people already.. that's too many to continue to provide housing and services for everyone. And let's be honest.. providing "free housing" or free food and services is not really " free". Someone pays..the taxpayers, other people basically are paying for others to live. Seems like that's known as Socialism.

      Safety nets aren't Socialism, or Communism. Before 1980, there was a good quality of life here, emphasis on the ' WAS.'. You're right about too many people. Because while so many people were arriving,or being born, the housing stock stayed the same,even destroyed by getting bulldozed. We lost housing stock and didn't replace and add to it for four decades. There's a permanent housing shortage, thanks to that. So much competition for apartments,the average fast food worker can't afford a one bedroom apartment in America by themselves anymore !! That's so un- American,to live that way,as is this homeless crisis ! And don't forget, agencies and shelters do profit from homelessness. Lots of examples of that online. Homeless people are livestock to them.

      Hotels are just band- aids when it comes to this crisis. Instead of those, affordable housing should have been built all along. Neighborhoods would be safer, without people living in the streets. Normal countries don't have homeless people. Britain,Canada and the other English speaking countries all seem to have the same thing going on !! Don't you find that odd?

      Remember, it's only in the last couple of years,that any attention was paid to homeless people,and why they WERE homeless. Lots of money thrown at this crises was STOLEN. Garcetti should be hauled back to LA, and made to account for what was done with all those missing millions he and his cronies played with,thanks to no oversight or audits done ! Complaints should be filed against him for that. He lied about Measure H, his " experiment.". I'm very glad that Judge David Carter filed that lawsuit against City Hall when he did. It exposed a lot of wrongdoing,big time ! Before he lets them sign off, he must make certain that audits are part of that settlement. No more thefts of public ( tax) money! If you're not mad, you're not paying attention.
