I never thought a game would have story telling in music, but having different themes for genocide and the pacifist run really gives off story telling, the pacifist run is a battle where you're misunderstood and are just trying to save yourself and the land and are stopped by a person doing their job, but in genocide, this is the final wall, if you get past undyne, you are a genocidal psychopath
i always felt like this was the turning point of the genocide route. the previous two bosses were instantly defeatable,and this might have been because they started attempting to spare you. for undyne though, all bets are off. undyne knows you are pure evil at this point, and will do anything to defeat you. this results in one of THE hardest fights in the entire genocide route,partially because you know that past undyne,you have to have healing items, and undyne seems to almost know this,and thus shows no mercy. while sans talks, undying doesn't. it's an insane parallel of "powerful because of determination" and "powerful because you have nothing to lose",the latter representing sans.

She knows nothing of sans true power so to her she really is the only thing between us and the rest of the monsters. Makes this fight so much more impactful
Sans is much easier. I'm physically sweating after this fight, but I can easily do sans in one try each time. I barely beat Undyne with 1 hp due to the red soul attacks

IF you were to go in blind, sans would take a couple attempts because you need to memorize it all. So i guess thats why people think its harder. But to me sans is more of a "annoying" type of hard, kind of like math, time consuming but easy once you know what to do. But to me undyne is the "true" type of hard that truly tests your skill, reaction, etc. Sans is all memory and the same everytime, and once you know - you know. You will never lose to him again, But undyne is more unpredictable. So you have to know the formula, and not just know the answer.

Going back to this song it made me realize. If not one person got past her the undertale community would have never had found the sans fight and exploded into 10000 AU's about sans "what if" scenarios. She was the last line of defense before the determination of the player reached a million worlds.... She was the last chance for the multiverse of cringe to be stopped. A true hero. Now forgotten.... Such is the cruel fate if time.

When I first played this, I thought the pacifist run was the difficult one….then I got to this fight, and my mind was blown. They put this 3/4 through the game after lulling you into a false sense of security, and then they just nail you with this emotional bombshell. It is truly one of the greatest moments in video game history.

I only played the Genocide route once for a reason. This fight alone really hits home that _I'm_ the villain and... I just don't like being the bad guy. It's not the difficulty spike that makes me want to be good, it's the fact that I don't want to hurt my friends. What a genius game.

I moved on to other things and forgot about undertale, yet it was stuck in the back of my mind all this time, as a nice memory to think back for comfort since this game had a big emotional value to me. Revisiting this so many years later it's funny how it never dawned on me Undine was the first monster to naturally unlock the power of Determination without having it injected into herself. Kinda sad you can only bring that out in the worst timeline possible, but hey, still cool.
I adore this theme and its by far my favourite boss fight in the game, learning the patterns and how to move through the red heart sections was so fun to do, this boss is 90% the reason I do the genocide run

I slaughtered everyone genocide run style my first playthrough, the only one I let live was Papyrus cuz i couldn't kill the poor man 0-0. Sadly you gotta beat neutral first. I then cheated to get to sans cuz I got lazy (this was like years after undertale came out and I was late to the party), but honestly I love the asgore fight, probs my most favorite fight besides like honestly probs undyne or toriel. This theme has got to be inspired by ZUN's music, (from the touhou series) so many musical similarities down to the instrumentation. Everything from 1:58 onwards may as well have been composed by him.

I defeated her today. In general, I spent about 2.5 hours and ~35 attempts in 3 days. I managed to save 5 healers (including one piece of a snowman), initially all her attacks seemed impossible to me to not take damage, then it seemed to me that it was impossible to survive the slow arrows, but after 5 attempts I was able to pass them without taking damage, then the same thing happened with the yellow arrows, well, survival in The circular spears allowed me to defeat her. and I will never forget the feeling with which I dealt the last blow, how glad I was when I defeated her. definitely one of the best feelings you can get from a game

I slaughtered everyone genocide run style my first playthrough, the only one I let live was Papyrus cuz i couldn't kill the poor man 0-0. Sadly you gotta beat neutral first. I then cheated to get to sans cuz I got lazy (this was like years after undertale came out and I was late to the party), but honestly I love the asgore fight, probs my most favorite fight besides like honestly probs undyne or toriel. Oh wait no I let Toriel and Papyrus live cuz I fucking have a heart... LMAO

This theme has got to be inspired by ZUN's music, (from the touhou series) so many musical similarities down to the instrumentation. Everything from 1:58 onwards may as well have been composed by him.
Talking about that. Apparently, Battle Against A True Hero sounds particularly similar to Plain Asia
@@Giovansbilly It's the fast-paced trumpets/piano that make it very Touhou-like. There's also a common motif that ZUN uses, and it seems to be used here too. From 1:58, the melody has a very noticeable use of inverted mordents and an alternating pedal note in the melody. E.g. of upper pedal note: G - C - G - D - G - Eb - - - - - E.g. of lower pedal note: C - G - C - Eb - C - Ab
Toby has made it blatantly clear, both from references in game via musical motifs or, visual references, and outside of his game development (ex. hanging out with ZUN, making a touhou fan character [albeit a joke one, Apple Girlington] theme) that he's into touhou.

I defeated her today. In general, I spent about 2.5 hours and ~35 attempts in 3 days. I managed to save 5 healers (including one piece of a snowman), initially all her attacks seemed impossible to me to not take damage, then it seemed to me that it was impossible to survive the slow arrows, but after 5 attempts I was able to pass them without taking damage, then the same thing happened with the yellow arrows, well, survival in The circular spears allowed me to defeat her. and I will never forget the feeling with which I dealt the last blow, how glad I was when I defeated her. definitely one of the best feelings you can get from a game
